Twenty-six children with atopic dermatitis and markedly elevated serum IgE concentrations were evaluated for clinical evidence of hypersensitivity to foods with double-blind placebo-controlled food challenges. Selection of foods for challenges was based on positive prick skin tests (greater than 3 mm wheal) or a convincing history. Levels of N-Tyr-MIF-1-like immunoreactivity were measured in rat brain by radioimmunoassay (RIA). Although the highest levels were found in the pineal and hypothalamus, the striatum and thalamus also contained significantly more immunoreactivity than the other parts of the brain. Eighteen hybridoma cell lines were used to study species-specific, stage-specific, and serological cross-reactive antigens of the rodent malarial parasite, Plasmodium yoelii. A radioimmunoassay for ACTH determinations in human plasma was developed using an N-terminal antiserum. Plasma ACTH levels at 6 a.m. in 39 patients with normal pituitary-adrenal function were below 4 pmol/l in two individuals. The remaining had a mean of 32.7 +/- 4 pmol/l (n = 37). An unexpected association between Haemophilus influenzae type b (HIB) disease and simultaneous intestinal colonization with cross-reacting Escherichia coli K100 strains is reported. E. coli K100 were found in 18 of 92 (19.5%) HIB patients, compared with 2.5% in healthy individuals of comparable age and in none of 21 patients with meningitis caused by other bacteria. There was no difference in disease outcome, serum antibodies, and circulating HIB antigen between the E. coli K100-positive and -negative HIB patients. Possible explanations and implications of this association are discussed.

In preparation for the 7th International Histocompatibility Workshop 13 laboratories in the British Region participated in a local workshop. One hundred and twenty-three sera which had been previously shown to have activity on either normal B cells, CLL cells or B cell lymphoid lines in the absence of HLA-A, B or C activity were exchanged between the laboratories. Patients suffering from contact dermatitis caused by chromium sensitivity showed positive reactions to intradermal tests with chromium and cobalt chlorides. Patch tests to cobalt in unaffected and in healed eczematous skin areas gave negative results.
