Aedes aegypti: an emerging model for vector mosquito development.

Blood-feeding mosquitoes, including the dengue and yellow fever vector Aedes aegypti, transmit many of the world's deadliest diseases. Such diseases have resurged in developing countries and pose clear threats for epidemic outbreaks in developed countries. Recent mosquito genome projects have stimulated interest in the potential for arthropod-borne disease control by genetic manipulation of vector insects. Targets of particular interest include genes that regulate development. However, although the Ae. aegypti genome project uncovered homologs of many known developmental regulatory genes, litt…

Imported human rabies--California, 2008.

Compared with rabies in developing countries, human rabies is rare in the United States, but animal rabies is common. In the United States, most human rabies cases are associated with rabid bats, whereas in developing countries, dogs are the most common reservoir and vector species. In March 2008, a case of imported human rabies in a recently arrived, undocumented Mexican immigrant was laboratory confirmed by public health officials in California. The rabies virus isolated from the patient was a previously uncharacterized variant most closely related to viruses found in Mexican free-tailed bat…

Effects of indoor air pollution on lung function of primary school children in Jordan.

Environmental exposure to tobacco smoke and contaminants from unvented cooking stoves has been linked to impaired pulmonary function and respiratory diseases. These risk factors exist to a greater extent in developing countries and, in the case of exposure to tobacco smoke, they are reported to be increasing. In this study, pulmonary function studies were performed on 1905 children in Jordan. The effect of exposure to these environmental factors on respiratory function was analyzed. A significant negative impact was found with regard to environmental exposure to both passive smoking and wood a…

[Control of scabies in the district of Ytre Nordhordland. An experiment within community medicine in the 1860's].

19th century Norway may be likened to the developing countries of today. Scabies was very prevalent, and traditional approaches to treatment were in vain. The poor peasant population would not spend money on such. Thomas Collett (1835-98), the local doctor in a rural district of western Norway, initiated a programme for community control of scabies. The local Board of Health agreed to purchase a large amount of sulphur ointment. 1/8 of a barrel of ointment was placed at the disposal of local teachers. The teachers were instructed to initiate treatment of school-children who were found to be in…

Epidemiological patterns of ocular trauma.

Ocular trauma is the cause of blindness in approximately half a million people worldwide, and many more have suffered partial loss of sight. Trauma is often the most important cause of unilateral loss of vision, particularly in developing countries. There is a cumulative risk of ocular trauma and visual loss during life, but the true incidence of accidents involving the eyes is not known. Males tend to have more eye trauma than females, and this is already apparent from childhood; lower socioeconomic classes are also more associated with ocular trauma. The setting for the occurrence of trauma …

Development and validation of a screening questionnaire for noise-induced hearing loss.

BACKGROUND: An audiometric health surveillance programme can be perceived to be a relatively costly exercise and employers, especially in developing countries, might therefore be reluctant to undertake this. A questionnaire might be a cheaper alternative. AIMS: To develop a questionnaire to help determine the prevalence of noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) in the vernacular (language) of a developing country and to validate it against an audiometric standard. METHODS: A questionnaire was developed, translated and administered in a face-to-face interview. Otoscopic examination was followed by…

Hookworm vaccines: past, present, and future.

Hookworms are gastrointestinal nematodes that infect almost 1 billion people in developing countries. The main clinical symptom of human hookworm infections is iron-deficiency anaemia, a direct consequence of the intestinal blood loss resulting from the parasite's feeding behaviour. Although treatment is available and currently used for the periodic removal of adult hookworms from patients, this approach has not effectively controlled hookworm in areas of rural poverty. Furthermore, treated individuals remain susceptible to reinfection following exposure to third-stage infective hookworm larva…

Diagnostic and Therapeutic Challenges of Hereditary Tyrosinemia Type 1 in Lebanon: A 12-Year Retrospective Review.

Background: Hereditary tyrosinemia type 1 is a rare genetic disorder leading to liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Few decades ago, dietary measures and ultimately liver transplant constituted the only treatment modalities. Nowadays, early diagnosis and therapy with nitisinone can reverse the clinical picture. In developing countries, diagnostic and therapeutic challenges may affect the outcome of this disease. The choice of the treatment modality may depend on the economic status of each country. Few reports on the long-term outcome of hereditary tyrosinemia type 1 are available fr…

Self-adjustable glasses in the developing world.

Uncorrected refractive errors are the single largest cause of visual impairment globally. Refractive errors are an avoidable cause of visual impairment that are easily correctable. Provision of spectacles is a cost-effective measure. Unfortunately, this simple solution becomes a public health challenge in low- and middle-income countries because of the paucity of human resources for refraction and optical services, lack of access to refraction services in rural areas, and the cost of spectacles. Low-cost approaches to provide affordable glasses in developing countries are critical. A number of…

Predictional need for supplementing breastfeeding in preterm infants under Kangaroo Mother Care.

UNLABELLED: It has been estimated that 95% of low-birthweight infants are born in developing countries. Nevertheless, most of the globally available resources are invested in developed countries, both for sophisticated, expensive technological care and for research focused on solving problems in scenarios in which access to expensive resources is available. Very little research on scientifically sound, economically accessible interventions reaches internationally recognized scientific journals. For instance, one accepted scientific dogma is that all premature infants must receive breast-milk f…

Nutritional problems in the African region.

Energy-calorie malnutrition (ECM) is the commonest nutritional problem in developing countries in Africa: 0.5-5% of the population under 6 years of age suffer from the severe forms and 4-40% from the moderate forms. It is possible that as many as two-thirds of the preschool children in developing countries in Africa suffer from some EPM (protein-calorie malnutrition). The recent Sahelian drought and civil wars in some countries in Africa have increased the size of the problem and the severity and prevalence of EPM in several parts of Africa. The aetiological factors of EPM in Africa include sh…

Rapidly progressing necrotic hand ulcer in a patient with angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma.

Mucormycosis is a fungal infection caused by opportunistic fungi of the phylum Glomeromycota, subphylum Mucormycotina. In developed countries, it affects patients with haematological malignancies undergoing chemotherapy and those who have received allogenic stem cell transplants, while in developing countries it is seen in those with uncontrolled diabetes mellitus. Herein, we report a case of cutaneous mucormycosis in a 67yo Chinese gentleman with background of angioimmunoblastic T cell lymphoma (AITL) on chemotherapy. We also share the clinicopathological findings of this and correlate these …

Pellagra in Zanzibar: a rare diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Pellagra is a nutritional disease resulting from a deficiency of vitamin B3 (niacin) primarily due to corn consumption, especially in developing countries, but in developed countries, it can occur secondarily as a consequence of chronic alcoholism, malabsorption, certain drugs, and bariatric surgery. RESULTS: We present a case of a 32-year-old woman from a rural area in Zanzibar who was a heavy alcohol consumer and came in with features suggestive of pellagra. CONCLUSION: Our therapeutic approach consisted of niacin 500 mg once daily and betamethasone + salicylic acid ointment tw…

Me Too? Yes, Me Too! Sexual Harassment of Female Expatriates in China's Overseas Enterprises.

Through in-depth interviews with Chinese female expatriates who have worked in the country's overseas enterprises in developing countries, this study found that female expatriates frequently encountered sexual harassment and other forms of gender-based prejudice from both home and host countries. The lack of organizational gender consciousness and mechanisms to address gender inequality contributes to women's vulnerability to gender-based workplace hostility. Thus, it is necessary for Chinese enterprises to reassess their organizational policies and cultures when expanding their international …

Animal and Human Brucellosis in Pakistan.

Brucellosis is a bacterial zoonotic disease that affects many animal species and can be transmitted to humans via direct contact or via contaminated food. Although brucellosis is a serious health hazard, its public health concern has been neglected in many countries. In some developing countries, such as Pakistan, where brucellosis is endemic, this disease continues to be of importance. A literature search for the past 11 years (2011-2021) provided a comprehensive insight into brucellosis in Pakistan. In this review, particular emphasis was placed on occurrence, diagnostic tests used, and prev…

Dengue: A Minireview.

Dengue, caused by infection of any of four dengue virus serotypes (DENV-1 to DENV-4), is a mosquito-borne disease of major public health concern associated with significant morbidity, mortality, and economic cost, particularly in developing countries. Dengue incidence has increased 30-fold in the last 50 years and over 50% of the world's population, in more than 100 countries, live in areas at risk of DENV infection. We reviews DENV biology, epidemiology, transmission dynamics including circulating serotypes and genotypes, the immune response, the pathogenesis of the disease as well as updated…

Amebic Infection of the Female Genital Tract: A Report of Three Cases.

Amebiasis is a common protozoan disease with a worldwide distribution. It is endemic in tropical developing countries, and cases are being detected in subtropical countries as well. It usually presents with intestinal manifestations. An extraintestinal manifestation of this disease, amebic vaginitis and amebic cervicitis, is rare and often misinterpreted clinically as vaginal and cervical carcinoma because of its overall ulcerated and necrotic appearance. Awareness of this rare manifestation is important for preventing unnecessary interventions and for effectively managing the patients with an…

Hepatitis E virus and neurological disorders.

Hepatitis E is the most common cause of hepatitis worldwide. While originally considered a disease of developing countries, it is increasingly recognised in developed countries, probably related to contaminated pork meat, and where infection is often asymptomatic. However, several non-liver manifestations have become apparent, the most important of which are neurological, including Guillain-Barré syndrome (acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (AIDP)), neuralgic amyotrophy and meningoencephalitis. We recommend testing all patients with AIDP and neuralgic amyotrophy for hepati…

Retinopathy of prematurity blindness worldwide: phenotypes in the third epidemic.

Blindness due to retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is an increasing problem worldwide as improved levels of neonatal care are provided in countries with developing neonatal intensive care units. The occurrence of ROP blindness varies dramatically with the socioeconomic development of a country. In regions with high levels of neonatal care and adequate resources, ROP blindness is largely restricted to premature infants with very low birth weight and low gestational age while in middle- and low-income countries with regional variation in technology and capacity, limited health resources may well

Uncommon gastrointestinal complications of enteric fever in a non-endemic country.

Enteric fever is a systemic illness with varying presentation. It is an important infectious disease in developing countries and also in industrialized countries where many migrants reside. Enteric fever can result in complications in different organ systems and delay in identification and prompt treatment can be fatal. The important gastrointestinal complications of enteric fever include hepatitis, intestinal ulcers, bleeding and bowel perforation. We report three relatively uncommon complications of enteric fever in Qatar, a non-endemic country, ileal ulcer presenting with hematochezia; duod…
