In a double-blind study 40 overweight maturity-onset diabetics on a weight-reducing diet were randomly assigned to treatment with either the appetite-suppressant diethylpropion hydrochloride (Tenuate), or placebo. After treatment for 8 weeks the mean weight loss achieved by each group was 4.9 and 3.3%, respectively. This approximately equal weight loss was too slight to exert any significant effect on glucose tolerance. Thus, an additional effect of this anorexiant in comparison with diet restriction alone, as described in obese non-diabetic subjects, is not evident in the case of obese diabet

A double blind study is described in which 17 patients with intractable pruritus vulvae were treated by multiple intradermal injections of absolute alcohol. In each patient half the vulva was treated with alcohol whilst the other half was injected with water. Treatment with alcohol was significantly better than treatment with water (p less than 0.001).

The treatment of gastric ulcer by the H2-receptor-antagonist Cimetidine results in an ulcer healing rate of 60 to 80% during a 4 to 6 weeks therapy cure. In most studies Cimetidine is superior to placebo or equipotent to a high dose antacid regimen, the latter being accepted to be of beneficial effect on ulcer healing. In the Zollinger-Ellison-syndrome Cimetidine inhibits largely gastric acid hypersecretion and represents for the first time a true alternative to total gastrectomy.

In a seven-week double-blind crossover study, Disofrol (dexbrompheniramine maleate +d-isoephedrine sulphate) was compared with Lunerin (brompheniramine + 2-amino-1-phenyl-propanol-(1)-hydrochloride) and with placebo in the treatment of vasomotor rhinitis in thirty-one patients. From the patients' evaluations on diary cards Disofrol reduced the symptom running nose to a higher degree than Lunerin, an effect possibly ascribable to a greater anticholinergic activity. Both preparations had equal ability to relieve nasal blockage and both combinations were found to be more effective than placebo.

A controlled double-blind clinical trial comparing a noval medicament, letosteine, to a known bronchial fluidifier, S-carboxy-methyl-cysteine, was conducted on a total of 47 hospitalized patients suffering from various types of chronic obstructive lung disease. We studied the effect of 1-beta-ribofuranosyl-1,2,4-traizole-3-carboxamide (ribavirin) on 66 patients with acute viral hepatitis, by a double-blind study. Thirty-three of these patients received the active drug and the other 33 received a placebo. The effect of ribavirin was evaluated by the clinical picture and by the changes in both direct and total serum bilirubin and in the activity of serum glutamic-pyruvic and glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminases. We describe a technique of administering prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) in a viscous cellulose gel into the vagina to ripen the unfavourable cervix in patients requiring induction of labour. A total of 168 primigravidae were studied, of whom 102 received 2 mg PGE2 in 2% gel and 66 received 5 mg PGE2 in 4% gel. In the latter group, the state of the cervix was significantly improved in 58 patients (87.9%), while 32 (48.5%) had started labour before planned induction. There were no maternal or fetal side effects or complications.

Twenty-one patients suffering from the premenstrual syndrome were each studied during three menstrual cycles. After a control cycle, bromocriptine and placebo were given during the luteal phase of the cycle in a random double-blind cross-over manner, each patient serving as her own control.
