Calf cutaneous stimulation generates reflexes in the thigh that can be modified by subthreshold noisy vibration.

Imperceptible tactile noise applied to the skin of the feet enhances posture-correcting cutaneous reflexes. This sensory augmentation technique, stochastic resonance (SR), has not been tested in the less-sensitive hairy skin of the leg for its reflex-enhancement ability. The objectives of this study were to determine whether calf skin stimulation produces cutaneous reflexes and whether noise can modify the reflex. In 20 participants, electrotactile pulse trains were applied at the calf while participants performed submaximal isometric knee extension. To test SR, five different levels of vibrot

The mesencephalic locomotor region recruits V2a reticulospinal neurons to drive forward locomotion in larval zebrafish.

The mesencephalic locomotor region (MLR) is a brain stem area whose stimulation triggers graded forward locomotion. How MLR neurons recruit downstream vsx2+ (V2a) reticulospinal neurons (RSNs) is poorly understood. Here, to overcome this challenge, we uncovered the locus of MLR in transparent larval zebrafish and show that the MLR locus is distinct from the nucleus of the medial longitudinal fasciculus. MLR stimulations reliably elicit forward locomotion of controlled duration and frequency. MLR neurons recruit V2a RSNs via projections onto somata in pontine and retropontine areas, and onto de

The diagnostic and prognostic utility of repetitive nerve stimulation in patients with myasthenia gravis.

Repetitive nerve stimulation (RNS) is a standard test for the diagnosis of myasthenia gravis (MG), where decrement of compound muscle action potentials (CMAP) corresponds to clinical muscle fatigability. Our aim was to ascertain the diagnostic and prognostic utility of RNS in MG patients. This study included MG patients treated between 01/2000 and 12/2016, with an observational period of at least one year and a minimum of two neurological examinations. Clinical and electrophysiological data were retrospectively gathered from patient records, and CMAP decrement was correlated with autoantibody

Dynamic amplitude modulation of microstimulation evokes biomimetic onset and offset transients and reduces depression of evoked calcium responses in sensory cortices.

BACKGROUND: Intracortical microstimulation (ICMS) is an emerging approach to restore sensation to people with neurological injury or disease. Biomimetic microstimulation, or stimulus trains that mimic neural activity in the brain through encoding of onset and offset transients, could improve the utility of ICMS for brain-computer interface (BCI) applications, but how biomimetic microstimulation affects neural activation is not understood. Current "biomimetic" ICMS trains aim to reproduce the strong onset and offset transients evoked in the brain by sensory input through dynamic modulation of s

Transformer-based light-evoked retinal spiking activity prediction.

Retinal visual prosthetic devices aim to restore vision via electrical stimulation delivered on the retina. While a number of devices have been commercially available, the stimulation strategies applied have not met the expectations of end-users. These stimulation strategies involve the neurons being activated based on their spatial properties, regardless of their functions, which may lead to lower visual acuity. The ability to predict light-evoked neural activities thus becomes crucial for the development of a retinal prosthetic device with better visual acuity. In addition to temporal nonlin

Temporal Electroencephalography Traits Dissociating Tactile Information and Cross-Modal Congruence Effects.

To explore whether temporal electroencephalography (EEG) traits can dissociate the physical properties of touching objects and the congruence effects of cross-modal stimuli, we applied a machine learning approach to two major temporal domain EEG traits, event-related potential (ERP) and somatosensory evoked potential (SEP), for each anatomical brain region. During a task in which participants had to identify one of two material surfaces as a tactile stimulus, a photo image that matched ('congruent') or mismatched ('incongruent') the material they were touching was given as a visual stimulus. Effects of eccentric contraction on force enhancement in rat fast-twitch muscle.

The aim of this study was to elucidate the effects of eccentric contraction (ECC) on force enhancement in rat fast-twitch skeletal muscle. Gastrocnemius (GAS) muscles were subjected to 200 ECCs in situ by electrical stimulation. Immediately before and after the stimulation, isometric torque produced by ankle flexion was measured at an ankle angle of 90°. After the second torque measurement, the superficial regions of the muscles were dissected and subjected to biochemical and skinned fiber analysis. ECC did not induce changes in the amount of degraded titin. After ECC, isometric torques in the

Effects of Low-Intensity Vestibular Noise Stimulation on Postural Instability in Patients with Parkinson's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Postural instability is a major disabling factor in patients with advanced Parkinson's disease (PD) and often resistant to treatment. Previous studies indicated that imbalance in PD may be reduced by low-intensity noisy galvanic vestibular stimulation (nGVS). OBJECTIVE: To investigate the potential mode of action of this therapeutic effect. In particular, we examined whether nGVS-induced reductions of body sway in PD are compatible with stochastic resonance (SR), a mechanism by which weak sensory noise stimulation can paradoxically enhance sensory information transfer. METHODS: E

Headaches provoked by cortical stimulation: Their localizing value in focal epileptic seizures.

OBJECTIVE: Electrical stimulations performed in awake patients identified dura mater, venous sinuses, and arteries as pain-sensitive intracranial structures. However, cephalic pain has been only occasionally reported in patients with epilepsy undergoing stereo-electroencephalography (SEEG) stimulations. METHODS: The aim of our study was to investigate whether headache can be triggered by SEEG stimulations and might be related to specific cortical areas. Data were gathered from 16 050 stimulations collected in 266 patients who underwent a SEEG as part of a presurgical assessment of their drug-

Intravitreal quantum dots for retinitis pigmentosa: a first-in-human safety study.

Background: Studies indicate that electrical stimulation of retinitis pigmentosa (RP) retina is beneficial. Quantum dots (QDs) can convert light to electrical stimulus and therefore may have therapeutic potential for RP. Methods: This was an open-label, fellow eye-controlled, first-in-human safety study. Five adults with end-stage (arm A) and 15 with severe (arm B) RP received one or two intravitreal injections of 0.2 or 2μM cadmium/selenium 655 Alt QDs. Results: No adverse events were attributed to QDs. In arm A, median best corrected visual acuity was unchanged. In arm B, mean best corrected

Freely Behaving Mice Can Brake and Turn During Optogenetic Stimulation of the Mesencephalic Locomotor Region.

A key function of the mesencephalic locomotor region (MLR) is to control the speed of forward symmetrical locomotor movements. However, the ability of freely moving mammals to integrate environmental cues to brake and turn during MLR stimulation is poorly documented. Here, we investigated whether freely behaving mice could brake or turn, based on environmental cues during MLR stimulation. We photostimulated the cuneiform nucleus (part of the MLR) in mice expressing channelrhodopsin in Vglut2-positive neurons in a Cre-dependent manner (Vglut2-ChR2-EYFP) using optogenetics. We detected locomotor

Channel-hopping during surface electrical neurostimulation elicits selective, comfortable, distally referred sensations.

Objective.Lack of sensation from a hand or prosthesis can result in substantial functional deficits. Surface electrical stimulation of the peripheral nerves is a promising non-invasive approach to restore lost sensory function. However, the utility of standard surface stimulation methods has been hampered by localized discomfort caused by unintended activation of afferents near the electrodes and limited ability to specifically target underlying neural tissue. The objectives of this work were to develop and evaluate a novel channel-hopping interleaved pulse scheduling (CHIPS) strategy for surf

Intramuscular Stimulation of Muscle Afferents Attains Prolonged Tremor Reduction in Essential Tremor Patients.

This study proposes and clinically tests intramuscular electrical stimulation below motor threshold to achieve prolonged reduction of wrist flexion/extension tremor in Essential Tremor (ET) patients. The developed system consisted of an intramuscular thin-film electrode structure that included both stimulation and electromyography (EMG) recording electrodes, and a control algorithm for the timing of intramuscular stimulation based on EMG (closed-loop stimulation). Data were recorded from nine ET patients with wrist flexion/extension tremor recruited from the Gregorio Marañón Hospital (Madrid,

An overview of potential novel mechanisms of action underlying Tumor Treating Fields-induced cancer cell death and their clinical implications.

Traditional cancer therapy choices for clinicians are surgery, chemotherapy, radiation and immune therapy which are used either standalone therapies or in various combinations. Other physical modalities beyond ionizing radiation include photodynamic therapy and heating and the more recent approach referred to as Tumor Treating Fields (TTFields). TTFields are intermediate frequency, low-intensity, alternating electric fields that are applied to tumor regions and cells using noninvasive arrays. TTFields have revolutionized the treatment of newly diagnosed and recurrent glioblastoma (GBM) and unr

Peripheral Nerve Stimulation for Facial Pain Using Wireless Devices.

Since its original introduction several decades ago, peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) of the craniofacial region has been traditionally performed using devices intended for spinal cord stimulation applications with inevitably high rate of technical challenges and procedural complications. The lower invasiveness of recently developed wireless neurostimulation systems makes them much better suited for craniofacial applications. Here, we discuss the preliminary clinical data from several published reports and the ongoing multicenter prospective study of wireless PNS in the craniofacial region.

A waves in electroneurography: differential diagnosis with other late responses.

Neurographic studies are an extension of clinical examination and are performed for the functional assessment of peripheral nerves. The study of motor and sensory conduction velocity and the presence, amplitude, morphology and symmetry of the response to electrical stimulation are crucial for the diagnosis and management of peripheral neuromuscular disorders. Neurography also plays an important role in the search for so-called late responses comprising the F wave, H reflex, axonal response and A wave. By analysing the parameters of each late wave, this paper addresses the pathophysiological fe
