Left internal carotid artery agenesis associated with communicating arteries anomalies. A case report.

Agenesis, aplasia and hypoplasia of the internal carotid artery are rare congenital malformations. They are usually asymptomatic and incidentally discovered through ultrasound or imagistic tests. The aim of this study is to improve their management in our Departments. We report here the case of a 39-year-old woman addressed to our ambulatory in 2013 for benign symptoms like dizziness and headache. Imagistic findings (magnetic resonance imaging of the brain, and cervical spine, and magnetic resonance angiography of the head and neck) indicated a very rare condition: left internal carotid artery

A case of tuberculous meningitis and the role of perivascular spaces in lymph cell migration in the brain.

Meningitis and encephalitis are inflammatory diseases in which acute and chronic inflammatory cells infiltrate leptomeninges, especially the arachnoid, and migrate through the subarachnoid space and by diapedesis, in order to extend around blood vessels and into the brain parenchyma. To what extent migrated/resident inflammatory cells participate to these interactions, or what are exactly the initial steps by which these cells reach the brain interstitium, it is not yet completely known. Recent years have brought new insights into the description of water flow circuits in the brain, suggesting

Synchronous gastric tumors - case presentation.

Synchronous gastric tumors, and, especially the presence of an adenocarcinoma and gastrointestinal stromal tumors, are less frequent. We present the case of a 75-year-old patient, with no gastrointestinal pathology in the medical history, who was admitted for marked asthenia, nausea, coffee grounds vomiting, inappetence, dizziness, weight loss and periodical epigastralgias. The clinical and imagistic examinations highlighted an ulcerative, infiltrative, bleeding tumor formation, present on the anterior side and subcardially on the small curvature. During the surgery, there was highlighted a se

Ovarian strumal carcinoid - case report.

Strumal carcinoid represents a rare form of ovarian teratoma, consisting of both thyroid tissue and carcinoid structures. The carcinoid component is a well-differentiated neuroendocrine tumor with excellent prognosis. Strumal carcinoid tumors are commonly found in peri-menopausal women who are not usually interested in preserving their fertility and who are thus open to radical surgical treatment. In this report, we present a 24-year-old, nulliparous patient with strumal carcinoid, confirmed by histopathology and a large panel of immunohistochemistry (IHC) markers, who wished to preserve her f

Keratoacanthoma of the conjunctiva - case report and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Keratoacanthoma (KA) is a relatively common, benign, rapidly growing and self-limiting squamous proliferation, which appears most frequently on the sun-exposed skin. The nature of KA and its relationship to squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) still represent one of the major debates in dermatopathology, as it is the truthfulness of such a diagnosis outside the skin. However, the tumor is now known to originate from the pilosebaceous units of the skin or from ectopic sebaceous glands of squamous mucous membranes, and to differentiate onto follicular isthmus÷infundibulum-like epithelium.

Fibrolamellar hepatocellular carcinoma with ovarian metastasis - an unusual presentation.

AIM: Fibrolamellar carcinoma (FLC) has been considered a distinct clinical entity vs. hepatocellular carcinoma, with respect to its epidemiology, etiology, and prognosis. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe the unusual case of a 23-year-old female patient with FLC and ovarian (Krukenberg) and peritoneal metastases, clinically mimicking an ovarian carcinoma. Multiple recurrences occurred despite initial R0 resection and chemotherapy, requiring surgical treatment. The patient survived five years and died from generalized disease. DISCUSSION: The particularities of our case are discussed by comparis

Immunohistochemical expression of Ki-67 and p53 along with their digitalized evaluation in the discriminatory analysis of reactive atypia and dysplastic lesions in gastrointestinal biopsies of the stomach.

UNLABELLED: The differential diagnosis between reactive atypia and non-invasive neoplasia (or dysplasia) can be challenging in the case of small conventional forceps biopsy specimens of the stomach. Despite the existence of several classifications for neoplastic epithelial lesions of the stomach, there are few auxiliary tools for aiding in this decision besides standard stains. We studied the utility of Ki-67 and p53 immunohistochemistry in this setting and their clinico-pathological correlations, based on a set of 99 cases with cytological or architectural atypia reviewed by three pathologist

Acute lithiasic cholecystitis, pseudoneoplastic form, a cause of conversion for laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

Acute lithiasic cholecystitis represents one of the most frequent pathologies of the digestive tract, most often requiring emergency surgical treatment. The prevalence of this condition increases with age and it affects women the most. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the preferred surgical treatment, as it diminishes postoperatory pain, it reduces the hospitalization period and medical and social costs, and it also provides a rapid postoperatory recovery. We present the case of an elder female patient, who presented with complex symptoms and signs, suggesting both lithiasic cholecystitis and a

Changes of desmin expression pattern in the myocardium of patients with alcoholic dilated cardiomyopathy.

INTRODUCTION: It has been suggested that desmin cytoskeleton remodeling may contribute to the progression of dilated cardiomyopathy and might affect long-term prognosis. This study is aiming at evaluating desmin expression in cardiomyocytes from patients with dilated cardiomyopathy of alcoholic etiology in advanced stages of the disease and comparing the results with measurements of normal heart tissue from control patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: For immunohistochemistry, sections from 36 myocardium fragments taken from left ventricle of dilated cardiomyopathy patients were immunolabeled wit

Occurrence of invasive cervical resorption after the completion of orthodontic treatment.

The invasive cervical resorption (ICR) is an irreversible and progressive loss of tooth hard tissues involving coronal and root dentine that usually affects single permanent teeth. The aim of this study was to present the pattern of ICR lesions detected in three patients with no contributory medical and dental anamnesis, at different time periods after orthodontic tooth movements. Conventional radiographs and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images were obtained by X-Mind™ (Satelec), respective 3D Accuitomo (Morita). The present clinical study confirmed that orthodontic forces might be a k

Collagen I and III, MMP-1 and TIMP-1 immunoexpression in dilated cardiomyopathy.

The extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling represents the pathological substrate of dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). In this study, we statistically analyzed the immunoexpression of collagen I and III, matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1) and its tissue inhibitor-1 (TIMP-1) in the myocardial tissue in 18 cases of DCM compared to a control group. We observed a significant increase in the immunoexpression of collagen I and III in patients with DCM and a significant reduction in the immunoexpression of MMP-1 compared with the control group. Also, the collagen I and TIMP-1 expression indicated a positiv

Anatomical features and prosthetic considerations of edentulous patients with mandibular reconstruction with autograft performed more than 40 years ago.

In this manuscript there are presented two cases, both with mandibular reconstruction with autograft harvested from the iliac crest, performed more than 40 years ago, but with different bone defect etiology, i.e., mandibular dysplasia and mandibular fracture, both having currently extensive tooth loss in the mandible, being in need for prosthetic rehabilitation. These cases confirm that reconstructive surgery of mandibular bone defects with autograft from iliac crest has a satisfactory long-term outcome, providing acceptable conditions for prosthetic rehabilitation. Bone resorption in the graf

Morphological changes in support mechanism of superficial face layers in Moebius syndrome.

Moebius syndrome, also called congenital facial paralysis is a rare neurological disease, whose etiology is not fully elucidated. It affects especially facial and oculomotor cranial nerves and its clinical feature is peripheral facial paralysis. The objective of the study is to highlight the anatomical and functional changes in the Moebius syndrome and establish certain criteria that should be the basis for reparative surgery in this disease. For this purpose, we used a group of six patients diagnosed with this pathology, in whom we pursued functional anatomical and histological changes of the

Malignant cutaneous mixed tumor with sebaceous differentiation.

Malignant cutaneous mixed tumor (CMT) is a very rare adnexal tumor with biphasic differentiation. In rare cases, a benign CMT (chondroid syringoma) undergoes malignant transformation. Sebaceous differentiation in a cutaneous malignant mixed tumor has not been previously reported. We present a malignant CMT with sebaceous differentiation, which occurred on the scalp of an 81-year-old man. The tumor showed epithelial elements composed of relatively small and bland-appearing ductal and cord-like structures lined by small, cuboidal-shaped adnexal cells, with a few large, dilated gland-like spaces

Autophagy in aging and disease.

Autophagy is a catabolic degradation system used to destroy and recycle the unnecessary or damaged components of a cell. Autophagy is present at a basal level in all mammals and is regulated by some conditions, such as oxidative stress, starvation or hypoxia. In aged tissues, increased but also decreased expression of autophagy-specific proteins, Beclin 1, LC3, Atg5 and Atg7 has been reported. Likewise, it could be shown that the lifespan of yeast, nematodes and flies is prolonged by pharmacologically stimulated autophagy using exogenous administered spermidine. Autophagy is potentially implic
