The molecular biology of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (review).

The emergence of molecular and cytogenetic correlates has opened exciting avenues to a better understanding of acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) and in turn has sharpened the clinician's ability for classification and treatment. While the pathophysiology and etiology of ALL remains vague, the clinical significance of the chromosomal abnormalities in the pathogenesis of malignant transformation is becoming clearer. This review highlights recent achievements in the genetic research of ALL and discusses the epidemiology, clinical features, and therapeutic determinants of this hematopoietic maligna

Experimental cryptosporidiosis in a primate model.

Cryptosporidium causes a disease in infant macaques that is clinically, histologically, and microbiologically indistinguishable from that seen in young children. A reproducible experimental model of cryptosporidiosis has been developed in pigtailed macaques (Macaca nemestrina) and used to studied the infectious dose of oocysts and the effect of inoculum size on severity of disease. Inoculation with either 2 x 10(5) or 10 oocysts via nasogastric tube resulted in clinical enteritis and the fecal passage of large numbers of cryptosporidial oocysts in all four primates studied. The size of the ino

Epidemiological comparisons of sudden infant death syndrome with infant apnoea.

A unique opportunity to study proven infant apnoea (PIA) and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) occurrences epidemiologically in 12 Counties in north-western Washington State during the same time period during which 180,017 live births were recorded revealed markedly dissimilar distribution patterns. The overall incidence of SIDS exceeded that of PIA by a factor of 3. Five PIA babies subsequently succumbed to SIDS. Statistical analysis reveals that these five events cannot be explained as random coincidences; they represent 3% of 163 PIA cases but only 1% of 503 SIDS occurrences. Infant apnoe

Treatment failure in filariasis mass treatment programmes.

The data from the first 3 years of the Samoan pilot filariasis control programme were reanalysed using incidence instead of prevalence statistics. With these statistics, failures of diethylcarbamazine treatment can be roughly divided into three groups: primary treatment failures, manifested by persistent microfilaraemia; secondary treatment failures, manifested by microfilaraemia recurring within the prepatent period after apparently successful treatment; and new infections. When cases of persistent and recurrent microfilaraemia are excluded by appropriate statistical manipulations, the incide

Trends, decomposition, and projections of gout burden among middle-aged adults in China: GBD 2023.

Gout has become a rapidly expanding metabolic-inflammatory disease in China, but the long-term trajectory, changing attributable risks, and future burden among middle-aged adults remain incompletely defined. We assessed gout burden among Chinese adults aged 40 to 59 years from 1990 to 2023 and projected trends to 2035. Using Global Burden of Disease Study 2023 (GBD 2023) data, we analyzed gout prevalence, incidence, and disability-adjusted life years among Chinese adults aged 40 to 59 years. Joinpoint regression identified temporal inflection points; Das Gupta decomposition quantified contribu

Temporal Trends in Cancer Burden and 27 Subtypes Among Women of Childbearing Age Globally from 1990 to 2021.

BackgroundCancer among women of childbearing age (WCBA, 15-49 years) has distinct clinical and public health implications. Using modeled estimates from the Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD) 2021, we assessed temporal and spatial patterns of total cancer and 27 cancer subtypes among WCBA from 1990 to 2021.MethodsWe extracted incidence and mortality estimates for WCBA globally, across five socio-demographic index (SDI) regions, 21 GBD regions, and 204 countries and territories. Age-standardized incidence rates (ASIRs) and age-standardized mortality rates (ASMRs) were calculated. Temporal tren

Geographical barriers and multimorbidity in quilombola territories of the amazon region.

BACKGROUND: Quilombola communities in the Brazilian Amazon face persistent social and territorial inequities that shape health outcomes and access to care. Geographic isolation, limited transportation, centralization of specialized services, and socioeconomic disadvantages contribute to unequal opportunities for timely diagnosis and treatment. Understanding how these determinants interact with patterns of multimorbidity is essential for guiding equiTable health policies and strengthening primary care in remote territories. METHODS: A cross-sectional epidemiological study was conducted with 51

Combination interventions to control the tuberculosis epidemic in the Karamoja subregion of Uganda: A modelling analysis.

The Karamoja subregion in northeastern Uganda is disproportionately affected by tuberculosis (TB), with an estimated TB prevalence >3 times the national average. Recently introduced health systems strengthening (HSS) interventions, including active symptom screening campaigns covering approximately 20% of the population annually, have substantially increased the number of people initiated on TB treatment, improved TB treatment completion and increased uptake of TB preventive therapy. However, to achieve further reductions in TB incidence and mortality, additional interventions are needed. We a

Prevalence, Associate Factors, and Disease Awareness of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: A Large-Scale Cross-Sectional Epidemiological Survey.

BACKGROUND: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) represents a significant global health burden with substantial morbidity and mortality worldwide. While smoking remains the predominant associate factor, emerging evidence suggests biomass fuel exposure and other environmental factors contribute significantly to disease development. Large-scale epidemiological studies are essential to identify modifiable associate factors and inform evidence-based prevention strategies. METHODS: We conducted a cluster-sampling cross-sectional survey of 65,680 participants aged 35-75 years during Jan 202

From behavioral to structural correlates: a multi-phase analysis of global reported mpox.

BACKGROUND: Mpox epidemiology has expanded from endemic zoonotic spillover to sustained human-to-human transmission. While behavioral risk factors have been well recognized, how macro-level correlates of mpox burden vary across epidemic phases remains insufficiently quantified, limiting targeted public health responses. METHODS: Using World Health Organization (WHO) global daily mpox surveillance data from January 1, 2022 to April 30, 2025, we calculated country-period reported mpox incidence and developed a phase-sensitive analytical framework integrating multi-domain macro-level variables a

Predictive and prognostic models and visualizations of distant metastasis in gallbladder cancer.

Employing multivariate statistical methods, we aimed to construct and validate predictive models for distant metastasis (DM) risk and overall survival (OS) in patients with gallbladder cancer (GBC), using data from the surveillance, epidemiology, and end results database maintained by the National Cancer Institute. These models were visualized through the development of intuitive nomograms. We extracted clinical data of all patients diagnosed with GBC between 2010 and 2015 from the surveillance, epidemiology, and end results database. Both univariate and multivariate logistic regression analys

Characterization and vaccine-induced immunogenicity of a re-emerging Neisseria meningitidis serogroup Y in Tianjin, China.

INTRODUCTION: Since the incorporation of serogroups A and C meningococcal vaccines into China's national immunization program, the epidemiological profile of Neisseria meningitidis (Nm) has shifted toward serogroups not covered in routine vaccination, particularly Y and B. This study assessed the immunogenicity of the quadrivalent meningococcal polysaccharide vaccine (MPSV4) and the quadrivalent meningococcal polysaccharide conjugate vaccine (MCV4) against a newly identified serogroup Y strain in Tianjin, and characterized its clinical presentation, laboratory features, and antimicrobial resis

Impact of twelve immunization-preventable infectious diseases on population health using disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) in Spain.

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study is to estimate the burden of selected immunization-preventable infectious diseases in Spain using the Burden of Communicable Diseases in Europe (BCoDE) methodology, as well as focusing on the national immunization programme and potential new inclusions. METHODS: The BCoDE methodology relies on an incidence and pathogen-based approach to calculate disease burden via disability-adjusted life year (DALY) estimates. It considers short and long-term sequelae associated to an infection via outcome trees. The BCoDE toolkit was used to populate those trees with

Projecting vaccine demand and impact for emerging zoonotic pathogens.

BACKGROUND: Despite large outbreaks in humans seeming improbable for a number of zoonotic pathogens, several pose a concern due to their epidemiological characteristics and evolutionary potential. To enable effective responses to these pathogens in the event that they undergo future emergence, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations is advancing the development of vaccines for several pathogens prioritized by the World Health Organization. A major challenge in this pursuit is anticipating demand for a vaccine stockpile to support outbreak response. METHODS: We developed a modeling

Bovine tuberculosis in youngstock cattle: A narrative review.

Bovine tuberculosis (bTB), caused by Mycobacterium bovis, remains a high-priority global pathogen of concern. The role of youngstock animals in the epidemiology of bTB has not been a focus of contemporary research. Here we have aimed to collate and summarize what is known about the susceptibility, diagnosis, transmission (infectiousness), and epidemiology to M. bovis in youngstock (up to 1-year of age). Youngstock are susceptible to M. bovis infection when exposed, with the capacity to develop typical bTB lesions. Calves can be exposed through similar routes as adults, via residual infection,

Analysis of serological data to investigate heterogeneity of malaria transmission: a community-based cross-sectional study in an area conducting elimination in Indonesia.

BACKGROUND: Analysis of anti-malarial antibody responses has the potential to improve characterization of the variation in exposure to infection in low transmission settings, where conventional measures, such as entomological estimates and parasitaemia point prevalence become less sensitive and expensive to measure. This study evaluates the use of sero-epidemiological analysis to investigate heterogeneity of transmission in area conducting elimination in Indonesia. METHODS: Filter paper bloodspots and epidemiological data were collected through a community-based cross-sectional study conducte

Association between pregnancy loss and ambient PM2·5 using survey data in Africa: a longitudinal case-control study, 1998-2016.

BACKGROUND: Increasing evidence from epidemiological studies suggests that maternal exposure to ambient PM2·5 can increase the risk of pregnancy loss. However, no studies have been done in low-income countries such as those in Africa, which have the highest incidences of pregnancy loss. In this study, we aimed to analyse the association between PM2·5 and pregnancy loss, including miscarriage and stillbirth. METHODS: This self-compared case control study collected data on mothers who reported at least two births (at least one case of pregnancy loss plus at least one normal delivery) in the Afr

Exposure to benzene at work and the risk of leukemia: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: A substantial number of epidemiologic studies have provided estimates of the relation between exposure to benzene at work and the risk of leukemia, but the results have been heterogeneous. To bridge this gap in knowledge, we synthesized the existing epidemiologic evidence on the relation between occupational exposure to benzene and the risk of leukemia, including all types combined and the four main subgroups acute myeloid leukemia (AML), acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL), chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), and chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). Bioactive compounds in foods: their role in the prevention of cardiovascular disease and cancer.

"Bioactive compounds" are extranutritional constituents that typically occur in small quantities in foods. They are being intensively studied to evaluate their effects on health. The impetus sparking this scientific inquiry was the result of many epidemiologic studies that have shown protective effects of plant-based diets on cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cancer. Many bioactive compounds have been discovered. These compounds vary widely in chemical structure and function and are grouped accordingly. Phenolic compounds, including their subcategory, flavonoids, are present in all plants and h

Dissonant health transition in the states of Mexico, 1990-2013: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2013.

BACKGROUND: Child and maternal health outcomes have notably improved in Mexico since 1990, whereas rising adult mortality rates defy traditional epidemiological transition models in which decreased death rates occur across all ages. These trends suggest Mexico is experiencing a more complex, dissonant health transition than historically observed. Enduring inequalities between states further emphasise the need for more detailed health assessments over time. The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2013 (GBD 2013) provides the comprehensive, comparable framework through wh
