MetaIDNet: A Fast Brain-Computer Interface for Color Vision Assessment.

Our laboratory has recently demonstrated objective, quantitative, and precise brain-computer interface (BCI)-based color vision (CV) assessment. During assessment, participants look at a flashing stimulus that alternates between two light sources. Light sources that appear to be different colors elicit larger steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEPs); those that appear to be similar colors elicit smaller SSVEPs. Thus, the stimulus-evoked responses depend on an individual's CV. BCI-based CV assessments evaluate CV by observing SSVEP sizes elicited over a color space; their accuracy depends…

The Influence of Facial Attractiveness and Advice Feedback on Advisors' Subsequent Willingness to Continue Giving Advice: Evidence from ERPs.

Advice-giving during social interaction is not a one-way flow of information. Instead, it constitutes a dynamic process that includes offering advice, receiving feedback, and adjusting subsequent behaviors. Few studies have examined how advisees' facial attractiveness and feedback type together shape advisors' willingness to keep providing advice, as well as the corresponding neural temporal patterns. In this study, we adopted an advice-giving game paradigm. We recorded event-related potentials (ERPs) when 28 participants received feedback and made subsequent advice decisions, to explore the i

Microstructural integrity within the damaged region of the residual corticofugal projection from primary motor cortex predicts the effect of noninvasive neuromodulation targeting the spinal cord in chronic stroke.

Distal limb impairment after neurological injury is largely a consequence of damage to descending tracts that structurally and functionally … he region directly damaged by stroke accounted for 49.2 % of the variance in facilitation of motor-evoked potentials elicited by single-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation. White matter volume within the damaged region was only weakly correlated with the observed change. Microstructure in caudal portions of the residual tract subject to secondary degeneration …

Tympanic Pre-Operative Electrically Evoked Auditory Late Response (TympEALR) as an Alternative to Trans-Tympanic Tests Using Anesthesia in Cochlear Implant Candidacy.

Background/Objectives: Before a cochlear implant is considered, patients undergo various audiological tests to assess their suitability. One key test measures the auditory brainstem response (ABR) to acoustic stimuli. However, in some cases, even with maximum sound stimulation, no response is detected. Methods: The promontory test involves electrical stimulation near the auditory nerve, allowing patients to associate the sensation. Ideally, the electrode is placed in the middle ear after opening the eardrum. This method, along with trans-tympanic electrically evoked ABR in local anesthesia (LA

Alterations in neurovascular coupling following acute traumatic brain injury.

Following acute traumatic brain injury (TBI), timely transport to a hospital can significantly improve the prognosis for recovery. There is, however, a dearth of quantitative biomarkers for brain injury that can be rapidly acquired and interpreted in active, field environments in which TBIs are frequently incurred. We explored potential functional indicators for TBI that can be noninvasively obtained through portable detection modalities, namely optical and electrophysiological approaches. By combining diffuse correlation spectroscopy with colocalized electrophysiological measurements in a mou

Pedicle screw position changing policy for nerve injury problems during screw insertion on thoracolumbar compression fractures.

INTRODUCTION: Intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring (IONM) had important role related to the complications in spinal surgery. Somatosensory Evoked Potential (SSEP), Transcranial electric Muscle Evoked Potentials (tceMEPs), and free run EMG are parameters used to asses functional integrity of the nervous system during surgical procedures. Once warning signal was recognized, surgeon have to make a precise decision to overcome that problem. PRESENTATION OF CASE: We present a 47-year old male with back pain due to compression fracture of thoracic vertebra T12 and lumbar vertebrae L1. While s…

Late cortical disinhibition in relaxed versus active hand muscles.

Recent research suggests that long-interval intracortical inhibition (LICI) is followed by a transitory period of late cortical disinhibition (LCD) that can even lead to a net increase in cortical excitability. The relationship between LICI/LCD and voluntary drive remains poorly understood. Our study aims at investigating the influence of index abduction on LICI and LCD in an actively engaged muscle and a neighboring muscle, while varying the intensity of the conditioning stimulus (CS). Motor-evoked potentials (MEPs) were recorded from the first dorsal interosseus (FDI) and abductor digiti min…

Cytosolic calcium changes affect the incidence of early afterdepolarizations in canine ventricular myocytes.

This study was designed to investigate the influence of cytosolic Ca(2+) levels ([Ca(2+)]i) on action potential duration (APD) and on the incidence of early afterdepolarizations (EADs) in canine ventricular cardiomyocytes. Action potentials (AP) of isolated cells were recorded using conventional sharp microelectrodes, and the concomitant [Ca(2+)]i was monitored with the fluorescent dye Fura-2. EADs were evoked at a 0.2 Hz pacing rate by inhibiting the rapid delayed rectifier K(+) current with dofetilide, by activating the late sodium current with veratridine, or by activating the L-type calciu

Integration of Purkinje cell inhibition by cerebellar nucleo-olivary neurons.

Neurons in the cerebellar cortex, cerebellar nuclei, and inferior olive (IO) form a trisynaptic loop critical for motor learning. IO neurons excite Purkinje cells via climbing fibers and depress their parallel fiber inputs. Purkinje cells inhibit diverse cells in the cerebellar nuclei, including small GABAergic nucleo-olivary neurons that project to the IO. To investigate how these neurons integrate synaptic signals from Purkinje cells, we retrogradely labeled nucleo-olivary cells in the contralateral interpositus and lateral nuclei with cholera toxin subunit B-Alexa Fluor 488 and recorded the

Mapping of sheep sensory cortex with a novel microelectrocorticography grid.

Microelectrocorticography (µECoG) provides insights into the cortical organization with high temporal and spatial resolution desirable for better understanding of neural information processing. Here we evaluated the use of µECoG for detailed cortical recording of somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) in an ovine model. The approach to the cortex was planned using an MRI-based 3D model of the sheep's brain. We describe a minimally extended surgical procedure allowing placement of two different µECoG grids on the somatosensory cortex. With this small craniotomy, the frontal sinus was kept intac…

Nucleus accumbens shell excitability is decreased by methamphetamine self-administration and increased by 5-HT2C receptor inverse agonism and agonism.

Methamphetamine profoundly increases brain monoamines and is a widely abused psychostimulant. The effects of methamphetamine self-administration on neuron function are not known for the nucleus accumbens, a brain region involved in addictive behaviors, including drug-seeking. One therapeutic target showing preclinical promise at attenuating psychostimulant-seeking is 5-HT2C receptors; however, the effects of 5-HT2C receptor ligands on neuronal physiology are unclear. 5-HT2C receptor agonism decreases psychostimulant-mediated behaviors, and the putative 5-HT2C receptor inverse agonist, SB 20655

Alternative sites for intraoperative monitoring of cranial nerves X and XII during intracranial surgeries.

During intracranial surgeries, cranial nerve (CN) X is most commonly monitored with electromyographic endotracheal tubes. Electrodes on these endotracheal tubes may be displaced from the vocal folds during positioning, and there is a learning curve for their correct placement. Cranial nerve XII is most commonly monitored with electrodes in the dorsum of the tongue, which are also prone to displacement because of their proximity to the endotracheal tube. A retrospective review was conducted of a consecutive series of 83 skull base surgeries using alternative sites for monitoring CN X and XII. O

Visual acuity is reduced in alpha 7 nicotinic receptor knockout mice.

PURPOSE: Nicotinic receptors (nAChRs) are part of a heterogeneous family of pentameric ligand-gated ion channels that are widely expressed in the visual system. The impact of α7 homomeric nAChRs on visual function was investigated using mutant mice lacking the α7 nicotinic receptor subunit. METHODS: The spatial resolution limit was measured in α7 knockout (α7 KO) and age-matched control mice using three independent methods: an operant behavioral visual task (Prusky maze), cortical visual evoked potentials (VEPs), and the pattern electroretinogram (PERG) evoked by alternating gratings of diffe…

Top-down control of visual cortex in migraine populations.

The pathophysiology of migraine includes a heightened excitability of visual cortex that persists between headache events and that has been linked to impaired inhibitory intracortical processes. Here we examined the hypothesis that this cortical pathophysiology would affect the top-down attentional control of visual cortex. We asked two groups of participants-migraineurs (N=29) and non-migraine controls (N=29)-to perform a probabilistic spatial orienting task as we measured visual sensory cortical responses via event-related potentials (ERPs). Data were then analyzed as a function of whether t

Superposition model predicts EEG occipital activity during free viewing of natural scenes.

Visual event-related potentials (ERPs) produced by a stimulus are thought to reflect either an increase of synchronized activity or a phase realignment of ongoing oscillatory activity, with both mechanisms sharing the assumption that ERPs are independent of the current state of the brain at the time of stimulation. In natural viewing, however, visual inputs occur one after another at specific subject-paced intervals through unconstrained eye movements. We conjecture that during natural viewing, ERPs generated after each fixation are better explained by a superposition of ongoing oscillatory ac

Electrically evoked auditory steady state responses in cochlear implant users.

Auditory steady state responses are neural potentials in response to repeated auditory stimuli. This study shows that electrically evoked auditory steady state responses (EASSRs) to low-rate pulse trains can be reliably recorded by electrodes placed on the scalp of a cochlear implant (CI) user and separated from the artifacts generated by the electrical stimulation. Response properties are described, and the predictive value of EASSRs for behaviorally hearing thresholds is analyzed. For six users of a Cochlear Nucleus CI, EASSRs to symmetric biphasic pulse trains with rates between 35 and 47 H
