"Panic disorder" in schizophrenia.

A patient is described with operationally diagnosed chronic schizophrenia who simultaneously experienced repeated "attacks" during which times he had intense apprehension and autonomic hyperactivity entirely similar to that usually described under the rubric of "panic attacks" in nonschizophrenic patients. Delusional and hallucinatory symptoms were also transiently exacerbated during these episodes. Alprazolam, as an adjunct to fluphenazine decanoate, was effective in ameliorating these symptoms. Diagnostic and treatment implications are discussed.

Excess mortality in panic disorder. A comparison with primary unipolar depression.

We located 113 former inpatients with panic disorder 35 years after index admission. According to age- and sex-specific Iowa population figures, patients with panic disorder had significant excess mortality due to death by unnatural causes. Other studies suggest that secondary depression and alcoholism may have had a role in these deaths. Men with panic disorder also exhibited excess mortality due to circulatory system disease. In an age- and sex-matched patient group with primary unipolar depression, both men and women showed excess mortality. Suicide accounted for 20.0% and 16.2% of deaths i

Correlates of insomnia in patients with social phobia: role of depression and anxiety.

The severity of insomnia and the relationships between social fear, anxiety, depression and insomnia were examined in 179 patients with social phobia. Two-thirds of our sample had insomnia. Depression, anxiety, social anxiety, and insomnia were positively correlated. General and social anxiety contributed to insomnia when accounting for depression.

Avoiding antiperspirants during breast radiation therapy: Myth or sound advice?

Breast cancer patients are typically advised to avoid antiperspirants for fear of increasing radiation dermatitis in the axilla. We hypothesized that antiperspirants would have minimal effect on skin dose. We found no difference in surface dose±antiperspirants using 6MV photons at gantry angles of 0°/30°/60°/90° regardless of aluminum concentration.

Anxious Brains: A Combined Data Fusion Machine Learning Approach to Predict Trait Anxiety from Morphometric Features.

Trait anxiety relates to the steady propensity to experience and report negative emotions and thoughts such as fear and worries across different situations, along with a stable perception of the environment as characterized by threatening stimuli. Previous studies have tried to investigate neuroanatomical features related to anxiety mostly using univariate analyses and thus giving rise to contrasting results. The aim of this study is to build a predictive model of individual differences in trait anxiety from brain morphometric features, by taking advantage of a combined data fusion machine lea…

[Animal models of trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder].

Initially believed to be specific to humans emerging from life-threatening events, Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been found to occur in wild animals and can also be experimentally induced in laboratory rodents. This article aims to highlight and discuss the evolution and relevance of animal models in PTSD research. Studies by LeDoux, Davis, and McGaugh have made significant contributions to our understanding of PTSD. By focusing on fear responses in rodents and aversive Pavlovian conditioning, they suggested that PTSD could result from excessively efficient aversive learning proces…

Neural evidence of face processing in social anxiety disorder: A systematic review with meta-analysis.

Numerous previous studies have used event-related potentials (ERPs) to examine facial processing deficits in individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD). However, researchers still need to determine whether the deficits are general or specific and what the dominant factors are behind different cognitive stages. Meta-analysis was performed to quantitatively identify face processing deficits in individuals with SAD. Ninety-seven results in 27 publications involving 1032 subjects were calculated using Hedges' g. The results suggest that the face itself elicits enlarged P1 amplitudes, threat-re

Investigating the efficacy of attentional bias modification on individuals with spider phobia through the emotional attention network test.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the attention network function of spider phobics before and after attentional bias modification … ity to distraction by images of spiders. However, ABM training did not considerably alleviate their fear of and avoidance behavior toward spiders. CONCLUSION: This study elucidates the (1) vigilance-avoidance pattern among individuals with spider phobia when encountering spider-related stimuli and (2) change in underlying attentional mechanisms after …

Randomized controlled trial of computerized approach/avoidance training in social anxiety disorder: Neural and symptom outcomes.

Social anxiety is associated with diminished automatic approach toward positive social cues that may limit the ability to connect with others. This diminished approach bias may be a modifiable treatment target. We evaluated the effects of an approach avoidance training procedure on positive emotions, social relationship outcomes, clinical symptoms, and neural indices of social approach and reward processing. Forty-five individuals with social anxiety disorder were randomized (parallel 1:1 randomization) to complete computerized Approach Positive training (n = 21) or Balanced training(n = 24).

Exploring nomophobia with a German adaption of the nomophobia questionnaire (NMP-Q-D).

Nomophobia is considered a disorder of the modern world and describes the fear of being separated from one's smartphone and being no longer connected and reachable. The aims of this Study were to translate the nomophobia questionnaire (NMP-Q) into German, validate the NMP-Q-D, and use it to shed light on the nomophobia construct. A total of 807 volunteer test subjects were included in the evaluation, 50 of them participated five months later in a retest study. A 4-factor structure of the NMP-Q-D could be confirmed by exploratory as well as by confirmatory factor analyses. The four factors are:…
