Predictors of 2-year reoperation in Medicare patients undergoing primary thoracolumbar deformity surgery.

OBJECTIVE: This was a retrospective cohort study in which the authors used a nationally representative administrative database. Their goal was to identify the risk factors for reoperation in Medicare patients undergoing primary thoracolumbar adult spinal deformity (ASD) surgery. Previous literature reports estimate that 20% of patients undergoing thoracolumbar ASD correction undergo revision surgery within 2 years. Most published data discuss risk factors for revision surgery in the general population, but these have not been explored specifically in the Medicare population. METHODS: Using th

The Hypotension Prediction Index in Free Flap Transplant in Head and Neck Surgery: Protocol of a Prospective Randomized Controlled Trial.

INTRODUCTION: Microvascular free flap surgery is a treatment method for patients with head and neck cancer requiring reconstruction surgery. Patients undergoing this complex, long-lasting surgery are prone to prolonged episodes of intraoperative hypotension, which is associated with increased incidence of postoperative mortality, morbidity, and free flap failure. A new technology recently approved, named the Hypotension Prediction Index (HPI), allows precise hemodynamic monitoring of patients under general anesthesia, with a significant reduction of intraoperative hypotension events. This stud

Surgical ciliated cyst a newly added entity in WHO classification of head and neck tumours (2022): A case report.

The surgical ciliated cyst is a newly added entity under the cysts of the jaws in the World Health Organization (WHO) Classification of Head and Neck Tumours (2022). It is preceded by a prior surgery to the jaw many years before its diagnosis. A 53-year-old Chinese female, who had undergone cleft lip and palate repair followed by orthognathic surgery before the age of 20, was referred for management of an incidentally found cyst in the left maxilla. A cone-beam computed tomography revealed a unilocular, well-defined radiolucent lesion periapical to tooth 26. A provisional diagnosis of radicula

Bilateral Bi-Level Erector Spinae Plane Blocks as a Part of Opioid-Sparing Multimodal Analgesia in Scoliosis Surgery: A Case Series of Six Pediatric Patients.

Background and Aim: Postoperative pain after scoliosis surgery is severe and usually requires long-term intravenous opioid therapy. Local anesthetic options, such as wound infiltration, are limited and include neuraxial analgesia. However, they are rarely used due to side effects and inconsistent efficacy. We report an opioid-sparing multimodal analgesia regimen with bilateral erector spinae plane blocks. This case series evaluated the analgesic effect of the bilateral bi-level erector spinae plane blocks (ESP) in congenital and neurogenic scoliosis surgery. Patients and Methods: Six pediatric

Risk Factor Identification for Delayed Gastric Emptying after Distal Pancreatectomy-An Evaluation of 1688 Patients Based on the German StuDoQ|Pancreas Registry.

Delayed gastric emptying (DGE) ranks as one of the most frequent complications in pancreatic surgery. It leads to increased costs for healthcare systems, lengthened hospital stays and reduced quality of life. Data about DGE after distal pancreatectomy (DP) are scarce. The StuDoQ|Pancreas registry of the German Society of General and Visceral Surgery provided data of patients who underwent distal pancreatectomy from 1 January 2014 to 31 December 2018. The retrospective evaluation included comprehensive data: 1688 patients were enrolled; DGE occurred 160 times (9.5%); grade “A” was reported for
