[Characteristics of the medical status and living conditions of the homeless registered as tuberculosis patients in Nagoya City].

An Investigation by questionnaire was conducted in 1996 to know the tuberculosis (TB) status and living conditions of 50 homeless people registered as TB patients at one of Nagoya city's 16 health centers. 1. All patients had one or more symptoms of TB, 64% of them showed positive TB bacilli on smear, and 35.3% of them had a previous history of TB treatment. However, only 15.2% suspected they had TB at the onset of symptoms. 2. Main reasons of seeking medical treatment: 28.6% arrived by ambulance after falling down from exhaustion, 25.7% had consulted with welfare agencies after the onset of s

Maternal occupational/environmental exposure to selected organic solvents and small-for-gestational-age births: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Although studies have suggested an association between organic solvent exposure and small-for-gestational age (SGA), conclusions remain inconsistent due to variations in sample size and study design, with insufficient epidemiological evidence. OBJECTIVE: We investigated the association between organic solvent exposure and SGA. METHODS: Following the PRISMA guidelines, searched PubMed, MEDLINE, Embase, and Science Direct databases for cohort and case-control studies. Exposure was classified based on job-exposure matrices (JEMs), expert assessment, or self-reported history. SGA was

Eosinophilic meningitis epidemiological data from a national database in Thailand's Department of Disease Control: a pragmatic, retrospective analytical study.

BACKGROUND: Eosinophilic meningitis (EOM) is a rare neurological disease that can be misdiagnosed or underdiagnosed. Based on reported cases in the literature, there have been 2,827 cases worldwide since 1945. There are limited data on the prevalence and trends of EOM in a real-world setting, even in Thailand, the country with the highest prevalence of EOM. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of EOM and EOM epidemiological data in a real-world setting. METHODS: This was a pragmatic, retrospective analytical study using a national database. We retrieved EOM epidemiological d

Ten Urgent Priorities Based on Lessons Learned From More Than a Half Million Known COVID-19 Cases in US Prisons.

COVID-19 is ravaging US prisons. Prison residents and staff must be prioritized for vaccination, but a rapidly mutating virus and high rates of continued spread require an urgent, coordinated public health response.Based on knowledge accumulated from the pandemic thus far, we have identified 10 pressing public health priorities for responding to COVID-19 in prisons: (1) accelerate population reduction coupled with community reentry support, (2) improve prison ventilation systems, (3) ensure appropriate mask use, (4) limit transfers between facilities, (5) strengthen partnerships between public

Housing and health--current issues and implications for research and programs.

This article provides an overview of the ways in which the home environment can affect human health, describes how specific health hazards in housing are related, and considers implications of these concerns for research and programs to address the health-housing connection. The widespread availability of decent housing has contributed greatly to improvements in health status in developed countries through, for example, provision of safe drinking water, proper sewage disposal, and protection from the elements. However, a lack of decent housing and homelessness among a significant number of Ame

Infection control measures on ships and in ports during the early stage of pandemic influenza A (H1N1) 2009.

Shipping companies were surveyed to evaluate the effect of public health measures during the influenza A (H1N1) pandemic of 2009 on ship and port operations. Of 31 companies that operated 960 cruise, cargo, and other ships, 32% experienced health-screening measures by port health authorities. Approximately a quarter of ports (26%) performed screening at embarkation and 77% of shipping companies changed procedures during the early stage of the pandemic. Four companies reported outbreaks of pandemic influenza A (H1N1) 2009 on ships, which were ultimately stopped through infection control practic

Slovenian Journal of Public Health: The Journey so Far and the Road Ahead.

The Slovenian Journal of Public Health, established 63 years ago as the official publication of the National Institute of Public Health in Slovenia, was initially aimed at tracking the development of public health in Slovenia and disseminating scientific advancements to professionals in the field. In 2000, a new editorial board took over and shifted the journal's focus towards enhancing scientific rigour and achieving international recognition. This strategic transformation led to the journal being indexed in the Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) in 2009, specifically within the category o

Type of Refugee Accommodation and Health of Residents: A Cross-Sectional, Population-Based Cluster Analysis in South-West Germany.

Objectives: Few studies have assessed whether refugees' health is associated with accommodation characteristics. We aimed to devise a typology of refugee accommodation based on variables on the accommodation and its physical context before assessing its association with health in multivariate analyses. Methods: We performed a cluster analysis based on a hierarchal, agglomerative clustering algorithm using Euclidean Distance and Ward's method. We analysed accommodation clusters based on number of inhabitants, degree of housing deterioration, urbanity of location (urban/rural distinction), and r

That horse bit me: zoonotic infections of equines to consider after exposure through the bite or the oral/nasal secretions.

Millions of individuals are in contact with horses through occupational or recreational activities. Injuries from horses are responsible for over 100,000 emergency room visits each year in the United States. Although various types of traumatic injuries related to direct contact with horses are well described, roughly 3% to 4.5% of all reported injuries are due to bites by equines. The immediate injuries are commonly either blunt or penetrating trauma to local tissue; however, the bite exposure may also transmit a microbial agent of equine origin that can lead to a zoonotic infection. In almost

Personal assistance: its effect on the long-term health of a rehabilitation hospital population.

After discharge from a rehabilitation hospital, persons with severe disabilities may not be able to maintain health effectively without adequate personal assistance with activities of daily living. Techniques of qualitative analysis were used to assess interview results based on the observations of 41 physicians, physical therapists, occupational therapists, social workers, and nurses in five rehabilitation hospitals. A positive relationship was found between the adequacy of personal assistance and the ability of individuals disabled primarily by stroke, spinal cord injury, or traumatic brain

Associations of hematological and biochemical parameters with radon exposure among male miners in China.

PURPOSE: Radon is a radioactive gas that produces a large amount of alpha particles during its decay process and a well-recognized health hazard, particularly an established risk factor for lung cancer in high-risk populations such as miners. Although hematological and biochemical parameters are useful indicators of human health status, the impact of radon exposure on these parameters among male miners remains unclear. METHODS: The participants of this study are 283 male miners in a tin mine in China. A targeted research design was adopted to conduct a questionnaire survey, physical examinati

Factor structure and psychometric validation of the Work and Well-being Inventory.

BACKGROUND: This study examined psychometric properties of a novel measure of occupational health and wellness - the Work and Well-being Inventory (WWI). Unlike other validated measures of employee well-being, the WWI adopts a holistic, eight-dimension model of wellness, delineates personal wellness from employer-supported wellness, and is straightforward to interpret. METHODS: Participants (n = 949) were a convenience sample of employees from four large behavioral health organizations across Illinois, Missouri, Nebraska, and Texas. As part of a broader wellness initiative, employees at all l

Experiences of heat stress and adapting practices among farmworkers in northwest Nicaragua: a qualitative study.

OBJECTIVES: Chronic heat stress and recurrent dehydration from strenuous labour in hot environments are recognised drivers of acute kidney injury among agricultural workers in Mesoamerica and may contribute to Chronic Kidney Disease of Unknown Aetiology (CKDu). This study explored how members of a long-term community-based cohort in northwest Nicaragua perceive, experience and adapt to extreme heat, within the broader context of environmental and labour changes. DESIGN: This qualitative study used focus group discussions with participants from a community-based cohort followed for over a deca

Statistical estimation of noise induced hearing loss among the drivers in one of the most polluted cities of India.

In the present study, an attempt has been made to assess the impact of vehicular noise upon the 3-wheeler tempo drivers and to know whether there is any relationship between hearing loss and cumulative noise exposure. For this purpose, 3-wheeler tempo drivers (Exposed group) and non-commercial light motor vehicle car drivers (Unexposed group) were chosen as study subjects. Three traffic routes were selected to assess the noise level during waiting and running time in the exposed and unexposed groups. Among all three routes, the highest mean noise level (Leq) was observed on the Chowk to Dubagg

Study protocol and rationale of "the UP project": evaluating the effectiveness of active breaks on health indicators in desk-based workers.

BACKGROUND: Excessive sedentary time has been negatively associated with several health outcomes, and physical activity alone does not seem to fully counteract these consequences. This panorama emphasizes the essential of sedentary time interruption programs. "The Up Project" seeks to assess the effectiveness of two interventions, one incorporating active breaks led by a professional and the other utilizing a computer application (self-led), of both equivalent duration and intensity. These interventions will be compared with a control group to evaluate their impact on physical activity levels,

Nasal carriage of MRSA among clinically affiliated undergraduate students at the College of Health and Medical Sciences, Haramaya University, Ethiopia.

Medical and health science students are among the demographics most at risk from Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), which is a serious hazard to public health. The main reservoir for MRSA is the nasal cavity, and colonization of this area can raise the risk of infection and transmission in healthcare settings. This study aimed to assess the nasal carriage rate of MRSA among clinically affiliated students at Haramaya University, College of Health and Medicine Sciences, Ethiopia, from July to August 2022. An institution-based cross-sectional study of 250 study participants was c
