Factors Associated With Self-Selected Step Rate in High School Cross Country Runners.

Luedke, LE, Heiderscheit, BC, Williams, DSB, and Rauh, MJ. Factors associated with self-selected step rate in high school cross country runners. J Strength Cond Res 35(4): 1141-1148, 2021-Recommendations for step rate, or cadence, during distance running come from varying perspectives including performance, running economy, and injury risk. Studies of adult runners suggest that running experience and leg length may influence step rate, but limited evidence is available on factors that influence adolescent runner step rates. The purpose was to evaluate relationships between running experience,

Analysis Choices Impact Movement Evaluation: A Multi-Aspect Inferential Method Applied to Kinematic Curves of Vertical Hops in Knee-Injured and Asymptomatic Persons.

Three-dimensional human motion analysis provides in-depth understanding in order to optimize sports performance or rehabilitation following disease or injury. Recent developments of statistical methods for functional data allow for novel ways to analyze often complex biomechanical data. Even so, for such methods as well as for traditional well-established statistical methods, the interpretations of the results may be influenced by analysis choices made prior to the analysis. We evaluated the consequences of three such choices when comparing one-leg vertical hop (OLVH) performance in individual

Bilateral shoulder septic arthritis due to suspected bacterial endocarditis: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Septic arthritis is an orthopedic emergency that requires rapid diagnosis and treatment. It is typically caused by occult bacteremia which allows bacteria to seed the joint or local invasion of a soft tissue infection. Most cases of septic arthritis are caused by gram-positive bacteria, with the most common culprit being Staphylococcus Aureus. The reason septic arthritis is an orthopedic emergency is because of rapid destruction to cartilage. The mechanism of injury to cartilage is two-fold: bacterial enzymes are directly toxic to joint cartilage, and buildup of exudate can tampo

Joint pain and osteoarthritis in former recreational and elite cricketers.

BACKGROUND: Sport participants are at increased risk of joint pain and osteoarthritis. A better understanding of factors associated with joint pain and osteoarthritis in this population could inform the development of strategies to optimise their long-term joint health. The purpose of the study was to describe the prevalence of joint pain and osteoarthritis in former cricketers, and determine whether playing position, playing standard (i.e. elite or recreational standard) and length-of-play are associated with region-specific joint pain. METHODS: The data were from the Cricket Health and Well

[Heart failure and stasis ulcer: A significant association (prospective study of 100 cases)].

BACKGROUND: Risk factors for stasis ulcers have been poorly studied. We conducted a three-year controlled prospective study of the usual risk factors [venous insufficiency (VI), obesity, phlebitis] and of other factors suggested by our experience, such as heart failure (HF). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Both in-patients and out-patients referred for stasis ulcers were included. The diagnosis of stasis ulcer was based on clinical criteria: venous insufficiency, cutaneous signs and/or severe leg oedema. Doppler ultrasound was performed systematically if the lesions showed no dramatic improvement withi

Risk factors of avascular femoral head necrosis after a pediatric femoral neck fracture: a 15-year follow up and an adjustment to the Delbet classification.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric femoral neck fractures (PFNF) are rare but associated with a high rate of serious complications such as avascular femoral head necrosis (AVN). Major risk factors and prognostic tools for an AVN are still unclear. As AVN is a devastating complication, this study aims to evaluate the predictors for AVN following a PFNF. MATERIAL AND METHODS: All patients that suffered a PFNF or an AVN following a PFNF in the last 15 years that were treated at a university-level hospital with a minimum of 12 months follow-up were included in this retrospective study. Patients with a patholo

Unmet Need for Equipment to Help With Bathing and Toileting Among Older US Adults.

IMPORTANCE: Home modification through seemingly mundane equipment, such as grab bars and shower seats, mitigates injury, dependence, and reduced quality of life in older adults coping with increasing disability. However, whether these interventions are underused in the US is unclear. OBJECTIVE: To estimate how many older adults who need equipment to help with bathing and toileting do not have it, describe factors associated with not having equipment, and describe how many who did not initially have equipment acquired equipment over time. DESIGN: This observational cohort study of participant

Osteosynthesis of ununited femoral neck fracture by internal fixation combined with iliac crest bone chips and muscle pedicle bone grafting.

BACKGROUND: Ununited femoral neck fracture is seen commonly in developing countries due to delayed presentation or failure of primary internal fixation. Such fractures, commonly present with partial or total absorption of femoral neck, osteonecrosis of femoral head in 8-30% cases with upward migration of trochanter posing problem for osteosynthesis, especially in younger individuals. Several techniques for treatment of such conditions are described like osteotomies or nonvascularied cortical or cancellous bone grafting provided varying degrees of success in terms of fracture union but unsatisf

Rotational Laxity Control by the Anterolateral Ligament and the Lateral Meniscus Is Dependent on Knee Flexion Angle: A Cadaveric Biomechanical Study.

BACKGROUND: Injury to the anterolateral ligament (ALL) has been reported to contribute to high-grade anterolateral laxity after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. Failure to address ALL injury has been suggested as a cause of persistent rotational laxity after ACL reconstruction. Lateral meniscus posterior root (LMPR) tears have also been shown to cause increased internal rotation of the knee. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: The purpose of this study was to determine the functional relationship between the ALL and LMPR in the control of internal rotation of the ACL-deficient knee. Specifically: (1)

Hockey: a pain in the butt! Isolated superior gluteal artery rupture following blunt pelvic trauma - an unusual case.

Superior gluteal artery rupture is a rare complication of trauma but a significant one with potential for substantial morbidity and mortality. This case demonstrates the importance of early diagnosis and treatment of this injury pattern. Endovascular embolisation has become the most effective treatment for pelvic haemorrhage. Acknowledgement of this rare injury as a differential diagnosis is vital to facilitate rapid diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Differences in vertical and lower-limb joint stiffness in RTS assessments between ACLR patients and non-injured controls.

The aim of this study was to establish alterations in vertical and lower-limb joint stiffness following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). 127 male patients 8-10 months post-ACLR and 45 non-injured controls performed unilateral and bilateral drop jumps, and cutting, while ground reaction forces (GRFs) and 3D kinematics were recorded. Stiffness and changes in vertical GRF were lower in ACLR patients during bilateral drop jumps compared to non-injured controls. ACLR patients also displayed lower knee stiffness in the bilateral drop jumps (d=-0.91, p < 0.001 and d = 0.53, p < 0.001
