Data were collected from hospital records on all patients who received non-invasive ventilation (NIV) during the period 1999-2000. Patients were treated with NIV if they had type I or type II respiratory failure or if they had respiratory distress with a respiratory rate above 30/min. We reviewed retrospectively 125 surgical deaths in the accident and emergency department of University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, a major health facility in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria, between April 2000 and March 2003. METHODS: A zip code-level PCP Index was created from AIDS surveillance and hospital discharge records and defined as (number of PCP-related hospitalizations)/(number of persons living with AIDS).

Twenty-seven patients were operated on for pectus excavatum between 1985 and 1996 and had a custom-made subcutaneous Silastic implant inserted. We have reviewed their medical records to evaluate the clinical course, and used a questionnaire to assess the subjective outcome. There were no major surgical complications. Medical records of 158 patients with bipolar depression were analysed for the incidence of a switch from depression to maniform states (mania and hypomania). Relation to psychopharmacological treatment was investigated. Thirty-nine (25%) patients of the total sample had switched to a maniform state during the treatment period in the hospital. Among that group the phenomenon occurred in 23 patients (15%) as a hypomania and in 16 patients (10%) as a mania. We performed a retrospective review of 34 humerus shaft fractures (HSFs) in children younger than 3 years to determine the frequency of child abuse in young children with this injury. Records of 183 patients with renal stones managed at Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia between 1985 and 1995 were retrospectively evaluated. The commonest symptom was lumbar pain which may be associated with either frequency, blood stained urine or dysuria. Hospital records of 24 Chinese infants and children (7 males and 17 females) with choledochal cysts were reviewed. The patients were aged 1 day to 17 years. The hospital records of 101 consecutive patients admitted for removal of premaxillary supernumerary teeth were examined. From the clinical notes and preoperative anterior occlusal radiographs the following information was noted: the position and orientation of the supernumerary teeth, and whether they caused delayed eruption, rotation or displacement of the associated permanent incisors. The medical records of 285 patients at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital with a definite diagnosis of sarcoidosis over the period 1973-87 were reviewed. Fourteen (4.9%) had involvement of the nervous system, in 8 of whom the neurological manifestations were the presenting feature of the disease. All patients aged 16-50 years who had been discharged from the Maudsley Hospital over a 4-year period with a diagnosis of schizophrenia were ascertained retrospectively.
