INTRODUCTION: Pulmonary actinomycosis is an anaerobic bacterial infection occurring primarily in debilated patients with poor oral hygiene. Before the penicillin era, thoracic actinomycosis looked like tuberculosis or neoplasia with chest wall invasion and fistula formation.

Incidence of urinary tract infection (UTI) during pregnancy among Pakistani women was examined. Midstream urine was collected from 250 pregnant and 100 control women and streaked on blood agar and incubated. Growth was considered significant if > or = 10(5)/mL bacteria were present. Among the pregnant women, 28.5% had UTI; 30.0% of controls had UTI. Among the pregnant and control women, 24.4% and 20.0% respectively had UTI symptoms, such as incontinence, nocturia and urgency. A prospective study conducted in rural India on pregnant women showed poor utilization of primary health services and very poor maternal care receptivity especially in terms of antenatal care. A very high perinatal mortality rate of 81.3/1000 live births and a neonatal mortality rate of 63.7/1000 live births was observed in the present study. We report six cases of corneal complications observed in disposable extended-wear contact lens users: two corneal ulcers, one superficial infiltrate, two punctate keratitis with subepithelial infiltrates and one superficial punctate keratitis. Four patients developed corneal ulcers associated with the use of disposable extended-wear hydrogel contact lenses. Bacteria were recovered from corneal ulcers in three of the patients.
