BACKGROUND: The European Working Time Directive has increased the need for surgical skills training which does not involve patients. Recent changes in the anatomy legislation now make it possible to perform surgical procedures on human cadavers. Standard formalin embalming, however does not provide a very realistic model and alternative approaches, such as Thiel soft-fix embalmed cadavers, should be explored and evaluated.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine if parathyroidectomy for primary hyperparathyroidism produces improvement in health-related quality of life in a United Kingdom population.
METHODS: Since October 2002, patients undergoing parathyroidectomy for primary hyperparathyroidism were asked to complete the SF-36 questionnaire, a validated self assessment tool prior to surgery and at six months post surgery. The questionnaires were either mailed to the patients or given at the time of outpatient follow up.

Arthroscopy has been utilised in the management of knee osteoarthritis for over 70 years but in recent years there has been growing debate about the efficacy of such treatment. We reviewed data from a national register, the Scottish Arthroplasty Project. We analysed 8897 knee arthroscopies performed in patients aged over 60 in Scotland between 1997 and 2006. Marked regional differences were noted for the rate of arthroscopy, with an upper rate of 230 arthroscopies per 100,000 age corrected population and a low of 80 per 100,000. BACKGROUND: There is minimal data on the outcome of early laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) for acute gallbladder disease when performed by trainees. This study assesses the outcomes of a policy of same admission LC incorporated into a surgical training programme in a major teaching hospital.
METHODS: 447 index LCs performed over a 3-year period were reviewed retrospectively. The indications, operating surgeon, operating time, use of IOC, conversion rates, reasons for conversion and post-operative stay were analysed. Multivariate analysis of reasons for conversion was performed.

AIM: Parastomal hernia commonly occurs following the formation of a stoma. This is a review of parastomal hernia repair using a modified lateral approach to access the defect.
PATIENTS/METHODS: A case series of 17 patients, with a median age of 65, who underwent parastomal hernia repair via a lateral approach over a five year period, is presented.
