BACKGROUND: Melasma and postinflammatory pigmentation are cosmetic problems with limited options for treatment.
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether selective photothermolysis of pigmented cells by Q-switched ruby laser treatment would produce clinical benefit in these disorders.
METHODS: Eight subjects with melasma or postinflammatory hyperpigmentation refractory to traditional treatments were treated with Q-switched ruby laser pulses (694 nm, 40 nanoseconds) at fluences of 15-7.5 J/cm2, and followed. Histology was obtained before and after treatment.

Tonsillocoagulation was performed on 50 patients with chronic tonsillitis by virtue of YAG Laser. PURPOSE: To evaluate and compare the use of the Kowa laser flare cell meter and intravenous anterior chamber fluorophotometry in assessment of the blood-aqueous barrier after cataract surgery.

Overgrowth of an esophageal prosthesis by cancer is a late complication of insertion which presents a difficult management problem. We have treated 14 such patients; 9 had Celestin tubes and 5 Atkinson tubes in situ for a median of 7 months. The median patient age was 75 years; 3 had squamous cell carcinomas and 11 adenocarcinomas; 12 were at the lowest thoracic esophagus or cardia, and 2 were anastomotic. In order to evaluate the role of gastric mucosal blood flow in patients with gastric ulcer, we applied laser Doppler velocimetry to the human gastric mucosa to study the regional microcirculatory mechanism.
