A comparison of treatment results in complete bilateral cleft lip and palate using a conservative approach versus Millard-Latham PSOT procedure.

Conservative non-presurgical orthopedic treatment in complete bilateral cleft lip and palate (CBCLP) cases were compared with those treated will the Millard-Latham (M-L) method, which involves the presurgical mechanical retraction of the protruding premaxilla using pinned palatal appliances. In conservatively treated cases, a head bonnet with an external elastic is sometimes used before surgical lip closure to ventroflex the premaxilla thereby reducing tension at the surgical sites. The M-L method involves premaxillary bodily retraction followed by a gingivo-periosteoplasty. In both series of …

A third patient with median cleft upper lip, mental retardation and pugilistic facies (W syndrome): corroboration of a hitherto private syndrome.

We report a severely mentally retarded young male with the features of the W syndrome. This syndrome, to date described in only two brothers of one family, is characterized by severe mental retardation with seizures and a pattern of facial dysmorphisms including high broad forehead, down-slanting palpebral fissures, hypertelorism, abnormal configuration of the maxilla and mandible, peculiar nose, and incomplete midline oral cleft. The face has been compared to that of a boxer (pugilistic face). Mild skeletal anomalies have also been described. Inheritance is probably X-linked. The present repo

Accumulation and depuration of ciguatoxins in green-lipped mussels fed toxic Gambierdiscus polynesiensis: Evidence from controlled feeding and transcriptomic analysis.

Ciguatera poisoning (CP) was traditionally associated with fish consumption, but other marine invertebrates such as gastropods and bivalves can also serve as non-traditional vectors. In this study, ciguatoxins (CTXs) accumulation, tissue distribution, depuration kinetics, and associated transcriptomic responses were studied using controlled feeding trials on green-lipped mussels (Perna canaliculus), an important seafood species, fed Gambierdiscus polynesiensis. In two experiments, mussels accumulated CTXs rapidly, peaking at concentrations of 5.14 µg kg-1 (day 19, Experiment 1) and 4.57 µg kg-…

Efficacy and safety of green-lipped mussel powder supplementation in adults with knee osteoarthritis: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a prevalent degenerative joint disease associated with pain, functional limitation, and reduced quality of life. Although nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are widely prescribed, long-term use is limited by safety concerns. Green-lipped mussel powder (GLMP) has demonstrated anti-inflammatory and chondroprotective effects in preclinical studies. This trial evaluated the efficacy and safety of GLMP supplementation in adults with knee OA. METHODS: Adults aged 40-75 years with symptomatic radiographic knee OA were randomly assigned (1:1) to receive GLMP …

An Aggressive Neoplasm with Mixed Epithelial and Sarcoma-like Features, of Uncertain Primary Origin, Presenting as an Upper Lip Mass: A Case Report.

Carcinosarcoma is a rare and aggressive malignancy characterized by both epithelial and mesenchymal components. It most commonly arises in the uterus, lung, or gastrointestinal tract, whereas occurrence in the oral cavity is exceptionally rare. Here, we report a rare case of an aggressive neoplasm with mixed epithelial and sarcoma-like features that initially presented as a benign-appearing upper lip lesion. A 47-year-old male first presented in March 2025 with a painless upper lip mass that had persisted for two months. The lesion appeared clinically benign, and an excisional biopsy was perfo…

Efficacy of clear aligner treatment in patients with cleft lip and palate: A 3-dimensional linear, angular, and morphometric study of the maxillary arch.

INTRODUCTION: This study aims to investigate the ability of clear aligners to achieve predictable outcomes in patients with cleft lip with or without cleft palate (CLP) and their effectiveness in producing symmetrical and asymmetrical changes in the maxillary arch shape. METHODS: The analysis included 48 patients with CLP who adhered to the treatment protocol. Differences between planned and achieved movements (lack of correction [LC]) after the first set of aligners were evaluated using linear and angular measurements and geometric morphometric analysis. A signed rank test for equivalence wa…

Persistent Hemorrhagic Lip Crusts as the Presenting Sign of Pediatric FIP1L1-PDGFRA-Positive Hypereosinophilic Syndrome: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

FIP1-like-1-platelet-derived growth factor receptor-α (FIP1L1-PDGFRA)-positive hypereosinophilic syndrome (HES) is a rare myeloproliferative neoplasm characterized by persistent eosinophilia and occurs predominantly in middle-aged adults. We report a 15-year-old boy with FIP1L1-PDGFRA-associated chronic eosinophilic leukemia who initially presented with persistent hemorrhagic crusts on the lower lip, an uncommon mucocutaneous manifestation resulting from thrombotic aggregates of eosinophil granule proteins. This case is followed by a systematic literature review of pediatric FIP1L1-PDGFRA-posi…

Minor modification of soft palate surgical technique resulted in a considerable increase of residual cleft dimensions for unilateral cleft lip and palate.

INTRODUCTION: A two-stage surgical approach, starting with the soft palate, has been practiced in the Gothenburg cleft team for unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) since decades. To improve the velopharyngeal function, a modified soft palate closure (SPC) technique was introduced. Clinical observations did however indicate that the novel technique resulted in a deviant residual cleft shape, potentially contributing to future compromised dental arch form. AIM: This study aimed to compare residual cleft dimensions (area, width and length) between different SPC techniques and at various age, …
