Implementation of substance use screening in prenatal clinics.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: To reduce women's consumption of alcohol and other drugs during pregnancy, the Department of Epidemiology for the Aberdeen Area Indian Health Service (AAIHS) promoted a maternal substance use screening program for prenatal clinics in 1992. This report describes the adherence to the screening protocol at AAIHS facilities and barriers to such screening. METHODS: Prenatal clinic staff members at 20 AAIHS health care facilities were surveyed to determine the extent of prenatal substance use screening and the barriers to its implementation. The medical records of a rando

Breast-feeding duration and growth of fully breast-fed infants in a poor urban Chilean population.

The duration of breast-feeding and the growth of fully breast-fed infants during the first year of life were analyzed according to sex, birth weight, characteristics of the mother, and breast-feeding pattern. All infants (n = 1217) were healthy and fully breast-fed at 30 d postpartum and 63% and 24% were still fully breast-fed at 6 and 12 mo, respectively. The median ages at introduction of nondairy food and of milk supplements were 6.0 and 7.4 mo, respectively. The probability of remaining fully breast-fed for 12 mo was significantly higher in infants with higher birth weight and higher mater

Modulation of miRNAs in Breast Milk via Maternal Diet and Body Composition: a Comprehensive Review.

The initial 1000 days of an infant's life represent a critical period for determining their long-term health outcomes. During this time, breast milk serves as the most distinctive and essential source of nutrition for newborns, providing not only the necessary micronutrients and macronutrients but also a range of bioactive components that greatly influence growth and development. Of particular interest are the microRNAs (miRNAs or miRs) present in significant quantities within breast milk. These small noncoding RNAs, ranging from 19 to 24 nucleotides in length, have been shown to play pivotal

Maternal Anthropometric and Obstetric Risk Factors for Small-for-Gestational-Age Births in Anuradhapura District, Sri Lanka: A Retrospective Case-Control Study.

Background: Small-for-gestational-age (SGA), defined as birth weight below the 10th percentile for gestational age, is a major cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality, disproportionately affecting low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The Anuradhapura district of Sri Lanka carries the highest low birth weight (LBW) prevalence nationally, yet no case-control study has systematically characterized independent maternal risk factors for SGA in this population. Objectives: To identify maternal anthropometric, obstetric, and antenatal risk factors independently associated with SGA births in An

Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy in the United Arab Emirates.

Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP), including chronic hypertension, gestational hypertension, pre-eclampsia, eclampsia, and HELLP syndrome, are major contributors to adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes. However, epidemiological data from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) remain limited. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and clinical characteristics of HDP in a large tertiary center, providing evidence from an underrepresented region and a basis for future studies. This six-year retrospective cohort study (2018-2023) was conducted at a tertiary referral center in Dubai, UAE.

Associations of employment status with social media addiction, anxiety, and parenting self-efficacy among mothers of infants: a cross-sectional study using machine learning.

BACKGROUND: Differences in social media addiction, anxiety, and parenting self-efficacy according to maternal employment status have important implications for maternal and child public health. However, evidence comparing these psychosocial outcomes between employed and non-employed mothers of infants remains limited, hindering the development of targeted maternal and child health interventions. This study compared social media addiction, anxiety, and parenting self-efficacy between employed and non-employed mothers and evaluated the performance of machine learning models for classifying emplo

Effects of emerging SARS-CoV-2 on total and cause-specific maternal mortality: A natural experiment in Chile during the peak of the outbreak, 2020-2021.

This study estimated the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on maternal mortality in Chile between 2020 and 2021. A natural experiment was con … ct obstetric causes were less affected. This suggests that the pandemic disproportionately affected maternal health by exacerbating conditions unrelated to pregnancy, childbirth, or postpartum, more than those directly linked to obstetric complications.

An Assessment of the Relationships Between Umbilical Cord Blood Gas Analysis, APGAR (Appearance, Pulse, Grimace, Activity, and Respiration) Scores, and Neonatal Outcomes.

Introduction Intrapartum hypoxic-ischemic injury is a condition that significantly affects neonatal health and, therefore, needs to be attended to urgently. Umbilical cord blood gas analysis (BGA) results and APGAR (appearance, pulse, grimace, activity, and respiration) scores are commonly used to assess birth asphyxia and the severity of neonatal acidemia. In this context, this study was conducted to investigate the correlations of BGA results and APGAR scores with neonatal outcomes to determine the combined value of BGA results and APGAR scores in neonatal health assessment. Methods The samp

Maternal exposure to multiple mycotoxins and adverse pregnancy outcomes: a prospective cohort study in rural Bangladesh.

There is limited and inconsistent evidence, primarily from cross-sectional studies, linking mycotoxins to adverse birth outcomes. This study investigates the potential role of maternal dietary exposure to multiple mycotoxins in the development of several adverse pregnancy and birth outcomes. We analyzed data from 436 singleton pregnancies enrolled in a prospective cohort study in the rural Habiganj district, Bangladesh, between July 2018 and November 2019. Thirty-five urinary mycotoxin biomarkers were quantified using liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry and used to esti

Unexpected Associations between the Number of FRAXE Repeats in Boys and Evidence of Diabetes in Their Mothers and Maternal Grandmothers.

The FRAXE section of the FMR2 gene, located on the X chromosome, contains varying numbers of trinucleotide repeats; boys with over 200 repeats tend to have mild cognitive impairments, though this is rare. Little is known, however, concerning the phenotypes of individuals with smaller numbers of repeats. Here we answer the research question as to whether the health of ancestors of boys from whom the relevant X chromosome was inherited differed in any way according to the number of FRAXE repeats. Numbers of FRAXE repeats in 5057 boys from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSP
