Using a two-phase solvent system composed of dichloromethane-methanol-n-butanol-water-acetic acid (5:5:3:4:0.1, v/v/v/v/v), high-speed countercurrent chromatography was successfully performed for isolation and purification of three iridoid glycosides from Fructus Corni for the first time. From 100 mg of a crude extract of Fructus Corni 7.9 mg of sweroside, 13.1 mg of morroniside, and 10.2 mg of loganin were obtained in less than 3 h with purities of 92.3, 96.3 and 94.2%, respectively. These target compounds were identified by ESI-MS, 1H NMR and 13C NMR.

The title compound, [Sn(2)(CH(3)O)(2)Cl(6)(C(3)H(7)NO)(2)], contains two hexa-coordinated Sn(IV) atoms symmetrically bridged by two deprotonated methanol ligands, with an inversion center in the middle of the planar Sn(2)O(2) ring. The other sites of the distorted octa-hedral coordination geometry of the Sn(IV) atom are occupied by three Cl atoms and one O atom from a dimethyl-formamide mol-ecule. Organic extracts of the leaves of Azadirachta indica A. Juss. yielded ten antitrypanosomal terpenoids. Three of these (1-3), are novel and are derivatives of nimbolide and nimbin. Rupestonic acid was purified for the first time by high-speed counter-current chromatography from a dichloromethane extract of the traditional Chinese medicinal plant Artemisia rupestris L. The separation was performed in two steps with a two-phase solvent system composed of n-hexane-ethyl acetate-methanol-water (6:4:3.5:6.5, v/v) with 0.5% acetic acid in stationary-phase. From 200 mg of the crude extract, 27.9 mg of rupestonic acid was obtained at over 98% purity as determined by HPLC analysis, and its chemical structure was confirmed by MS, 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance.

The reaction of 3,4,5,6-tetrahydropyrimidine-2-thione (H(4)pymtH) with mercury(II) iodide in methanol in a 1:1 molar ratio resulted in the formation of single crystals of the title compound, [Hg(C(4)H(8)N(2)S)I(2)]. The Hg atom is coordinated by one S atom from H(4)pymtH at 2.456 (2) A and by two I atoms at distances of 2.6872 (7) and 2.7044 (6) A, and has a characteristic deformed trigonal coordination geometry. The molecule has crystallographic m symmetry but the Hg atom is disordered above and below the mirror plane.

A spectrophotometric technique was used to determine the acidity constants of 4-dedimethylamino sancycline (Col-3), a new antitumor drug. The apparent pKa values of Col-3 in 0.5% methanol aqueous media at approximately 25 degrees C with a constant ionic strength of 0.2 were calculated manually and graphically to be 5.64 +/- 0.17 (pKa1) and 8.35 +/- 0.07 (pKa2). In addition, the computer program SQUAD was used to confirm Col-3 pKa values. The pKa values obtained by SQUAD were pKa1 5.63 +/- 0.14 and pKa2 8.39 +/- 0.04. These results are in agreement with the tetracycline-like structure of Col-3.

A method for the determination of cyanide in human red cells has been developed. Cyanide was extracted from red cells by adding water and methanol, and then derivatized with 2,3-naphthalene-dialdehyde and taurine to give a fluorescent product, which was determined by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection.
