The association of serum vitamin D concentrations in paediatric migraine.

INTRODUCTION: Migraine is a neurologic condition characterized by hypersensitivity to auditory, olfactory, visual, and cutaneous stimuli; vomiting and nausea; and severe headache. It is the most frequent headache syndrome in children and can be categorized in chronic and/or episodic. Multiple dietary supplements have been inaugurated for the management of migraine, the most prevalent of which is vitamin D. BACKGROUND: In recent years, vitamin D deficiency has been a global public health problem, with 30-80% of the worldwide population having vitamin D deficiency. The significant role of vitam

Proinflammatory pattern in the lower airways of non-asthmatic obese adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is known to be a pro-inflammatory condition affecting multiple organs. Obesity as a systemic pro-inflammatory state, might be associated with bronchial inflammation in non-smoking adolescents with a BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2 without evidence of concomitant chronic diseases. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We studied non-asthmatic obese patients (n = 20; median age 15.8 years; BMI 35.0 kg/m2) compared to age matched healthy control subjects (n = 20; median age 17.5 years; BMI 21.5 kg/m2). Induced sputum differential cell counts and sputum mRNA levels were assessed for all study subjects. Serum

A Refractory Livedoid Vasculopathy Accompanied by Methylene Tetrahydrofolate Reductase Gene Polymorphism Successfully Treated with Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy.

Livedoid vasculopathy (LV) is a chronic coagulation disorder characterized by recurrent, painful ulcers on the lower extremities. Methylene tetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene polymorphism is associated with coagulopathy. Therapeutic options usually include anti-inflammatory or immunosuppressive agents. However, the condition is still highly challenging to manage and no consensus over the first-line treatment for LV exists. Furthermore, when LV is accompanied with MTHFR gene polymorphism, clinical presentations could be more severe and resistant to treatment. We report a case of refractory

Aging, Parkinson's Disease, and Models: What Are the Challenges?

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a chronic, neurodegenerative condition characterized by motor symptoms such as bradykinesia, rigidity, and tremor, alongside multiple nonmotor symptoms. The appearance of motor symptoms is linked to progressive dopaminergic neuron loss within the substantia nigra. PD incidence increases sharply with age, suggesting a strong association between mechanisms driving biological aging and the development and progression of PD. However, the role of aging in the pathogenesis of PD remains understudied. Numerous models of PD, including cell models, toxin-induced models, and

Takayasu arteritis and hyperthyroidism: A secondary hypertension case report.

INTRODUCTION: Renovascular disease and hyperthyroidism are secondary hypertension. Takayasu arteritis (TAK) is a chronic, progressive, nonspecific great vasculitis involving the aorta and its major branches. It is one of the causes of renal artery stenosis. Hyperthyroidism is an endocrine disease caused by improper continuous synthesis and secretion of excessive thyroid hormone by the thyroid gland. Both diseases can raise blood pressure (BP). CASE PRESENTATION: we present a case of 18-year-old. Female, after exercise, fatigue palpitations. The maximum BP was 190/87 mm Hg, ankle-brachial inde

Human papillomavirus vaccination in Africa: An airway perspective.

INTRODUCTION: Recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP) is a chronic condition caused by Human papillomavirus six (HPV-6) and HPV-11 that involves the respiratory tract. Disease severity ranges from mild (hoarseness), through to severe (stridor, respiratory distress and airway emergencies). Africa has the fastest growing and youngest population of all the continents. It also has the greatest burden of cervical cancer. There is an association with infection of the oncogenic HPV strains and the strains responsible for RRP. It is reasonable to conclude that although RRP may be underestimated in

Epidemiology of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth.

Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is defined as an increase in the bacterial content of the small intestine above normal values. The presence of SIBO is detected in 33.8% of patients with gastroenterological complaints who underwent a breath test, and is significantly associated with smoking, bloating, abdominal pain, and anemia. Proton pump inhibitor therapy is a significant risk factor for SIBO. The risk of SIBO increases with age and does not depend on gender or race. SIBO complicates the course of a number of diseases and may be of pathogenetic significance in the development of

Speckle Tracking Echocardiography in Patients with Ankylosing Spondylitis and Evaluation of Subclinical Involvement.

INTRODUCTION: Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory condition primarily affecting the spine and the joints. It also affects multiple organs in the body including the cardiovascular system. Left ventricular (LV) global longitudinal strain (GLS) is a good measure for recognizing subclinical myocardial dysfunction. This study aimed to investigate if there is sub-clinical LV myocardial systolic dysfunction present in AS patients independent of the presence of cardiovascular disease risk factors. We also aimed to see if the GLS is associated with the aortic root abnormality present

Navigating the Diagnostic Challenge of Aspergillus Spinal Epidural Abscess in an Immunocompetent Patient: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Aspergillus spinal epidural abscess (ASEA) is a rare, life-threatening condition that can cause spinal cord compression with neurologic deficits. The diagnosis of ASEA can be challenging due to the atypical clinical presentation and low prevalence. We describe the successful management of a rare, immunocompetent, 85-year-old male with ASEA at the T12-L1 and L1-L2 levels and present a review of the literature. Based on most case reports and our knowledge, this is a rare presentation of ASEA in a patient without systemic symptoms, leukocytosis, or a history of immunosuppressive status due to chr

Erythema multiforme-like lip presentation in pemphigus vulgaris patients: a multicenter case series.

Pemphigus vulgaris (PV) is a chronic autoimmune mucocutaneous blistering disease. Autoantibodies are directed against desmogleins, leading to the formation of intraepithelial bullae. PV, as with other autoimmune mucocutaneous disorders of the oral cavity, presents diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. Approximately 50-70% of cases present first with oral lesions. The lesions commonly start as vesicles or bullae that rapidly rupture, leading to erosions and ulcerations. The palatal, gingival, buccal, and labial mucosa are the most commonly affected sites. Oral PV can mimic several other diseas

Management of Renal Failure in Multiple Myeloma

Multiple myeloma (MM) is a monoclonal plasma cell neoplasia that commonly involves the kidney. Renal impairment is a serious complication during the course of the disease, and it is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. The most frequent mechanism of injury is represented by the precipitation of monoclonal free light chains (FLCs) in the distal tubule of nephron, defining a dramatic condition known as light chain cast nephropathy (LCCN). A prompt and early identification of the cause of renal disease, particularly in case of acute kidney injury (AKI), is mandatory for its effectiv

Chemical pollution impairs the health of fish species and fishery activities along the Algeria coastline, Mediterranean Sea.

Chronic exposure to multiple pollutants affects aquatic organisms, even at low concentrations, and can impair fishery activities along marine coastlines. The bioavailability of toxic metals and the presence of metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in both water and sediment can explain the worst-case scenario of fish health and fishery production decline along the Algeria coastline. The hepatosomatic index (HIS), gonadosomatic index (GSI), and condition factor (K) in the studied species from the Algiers, Bou Ismail, and Zemmouri bays are the first indicators of the poor environmen

Expression of risk genes linked to vitamin D receptor super-enhancer regions and their association with phenotype severity in multiple sclerosis.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic debilitating neurological condition with a wide range of phenotype variability. A complex interplay of genetic and environmental factors contributes to disease onset and progression in MS patients. Vitamin D deficiency is a known susceptibility factor for MS, however the underlying mechanism of vitamin D-gene interactions in MS etiology is still poorly understood. Vitamin D receptor super-enhancers (VSEs) are enriched in MS risk variants and may modulate these environment-gene interactions. mRNA expression in total of 64 patients with contrasting MS severit

Kimura disease, a rare cause of inguinal lymphadenopathy: A case report.

Kimura's disease (KD) is a rare chronic granulomatous disease of unknown etiology that mainly involves damage to lymph nodes, soft tissues, and salivary glands. The clinical symptoms are mainly painless subcutaneous soft tissue masses, often involving head and neck lymph nodes and salivary glands, and are mainly characterized by diffuse eosinophilic infiltration, lymphocyte, and vascular proliferation. There are few reports in the literature that KD affects only inguinal lymph nodes. We report in this study a 41-year-old male patient who presented to the hospital for medical help with soft tis

Hypothyroidism.

Hypothyroidism is the common clinical condition of thyroid hormone deficiency and, if left untreated, can lead to serious adverse health effects on multiple organ systems, with the cardiovascular system as the most robustly studied target. Overt primary hypothyroidism is defined as elevated thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) concentration in combination with free thyroxine (fT4) concentration below the reference range. Subclinical hypothyroidism, commonly considered an early sign of thyroid failure, is defined by elevated TSH concentrations but fT4 concentrations within the reference range. Hyp
