[Results of an interdisciplinary study of primary inoperable stage T3 and T4 squamous cell carcinoma of the mouth, oropharynx and hypopharynx].

From Dec. 1980 to May 1984 26 patients with inoperable carcinomas of oral cavity, oropharynx and hypopharynx, were treated by us by a primary systemic chemotherapy. At all there were 95 patients with carcinoma of oral cavity, oropharynx, and hypopharynx, among these in 62 cases primary surgery was possible. In seven cases no tumor specific therapy was possible. A complete remission (CR) was obtained in 17% of tumors, partial remission (PR) in 39%. The results after subsequent operation (5 patient underwent operation) and radiation (all patients underwent radiation) were 35% CR and 26% PR. The

Discrepancies between clinical and histopathologic diagnoses in T3 pyriform sinus cancer.

The various ways in which pyriform sinus cancer extends to laryngeal structures were analyzed by whole-organ serial-sectioning. The problems regarding vocal cord fixation (T3) by this cancer are discussed. This study found that vocal cord fixation in pyriform sinus cancer is due mainly to the involvement of the intrinsic laryngeal muscles and not to the involvement of the arytenoid cartilage or the cricoarytenoid joint. A tumor originating in the medial wall tends to extend medially and to invade the intrinsic laryngeal muscles. This causes vocal cord fixation (T3) before classification as T2.

Patterns of recurrence following curative resection alone for adenocarcinoma of the rectum and sigmoid colon.

Two-hundred-four patients with previously untreated adenocarcinoma of rectum, rectosigmoid, and sigmoid colon were retrospectively evaluated to determine patterns of recurrence following curative resection. Seventy-eight (38%) subsequently developed recurrent disease. Of these, 40% (31/78) presented with local recurrence alone, 28% (22/78) with regional recurrence, 15% (12/78) with concomitant local recurrence and distant metastasis, and 17% (13/78) with distant metastasis alone. The degree of tumor anaplasia and depth of tumor penetration into the bowel wall influenced the rate of local recur

Survival Status and Predictors of Mortality Among Women With Breast Cancer in Southern Ethiopia: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

INTRODUCTION: Breast cancer continues to be a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, with an especially severe impact in low-resource settings. In such contexts, delayed diagnosis, limited diagnostic capacity, and inadequate access to treatment contribute to poor survival outcomes. However, little is known about how these factors influence survival patterns specifically in southern Ethiopia, highlighting the need for locally generated data to guide interventions. METHODOLOGY: A hospital-based retrospective cohort study was conducted among 507 breast cancer patients attending sele

Prognostic value of gross tumour volume in laryngeal cancer: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Gross tumour volume has been proposed as a complementary prognostic marker in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma. This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluates the prognostic value of pre-treatment gross tumour volume. METHODS: MEDLINE, Embase and Scopus were systematically searched according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Studies reporting pre-treatment gross tumour volume and survival outcomes in laryngeal cancer were included. The primary outcome was overall survival, and the secondary outcome was disease-free survival.

Artificial Intelligence in Gastric Cancer: Diagnostic, Prognostic, and Predictive Developments, Evidence Maturity, and Translational Challenges.

BACKGROUND: Gastric cancer (GC) remains a major global health burden characterized by substantial heterogeneity in diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment response. Artificial intelligence (AI), including machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL), has been increasingly investigated for the analysis of endoscopic images, radiological scans, whole-slide pathology images, molecular profiles, liquid-biopsy data, and multimodal clinical datasets. This structured review summarizes recent AI-based developments in GC diagnosis, staging, prognostic assessment, and treatment-response prediction, with par

Assessing the role of CT imaging in identifying candidates for neoadjuvant chemotherapy in right colon cancer: a critical analysis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Standard treatment for localized right colon cancer is radical surgery, followed by adjuvant chemotherapy for stage III or intermediate MSS and high-risk stage II tumours. Recent studies suggest a benefit from neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC), particularly for T4b and/or N + tumours. Patient selection for NAC relies on CT-based clinical staging, but the accuracy of CT in detecting high-risk features is variable, raising concerns about potential overtreatment. The study aims to demonstrate the accuracy of CT staging of the right colon with the purpose of indicating neoadju

Contemporary management of the clinically N0 neck in oral squamous cell carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: The management of the clinically negative neck (N0) in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) remains a challenging clinical dilemma. Although imaging techniques have advanced, occult metastases are present in approximately 20-30% of patients with early-stage oral cancer and clinically negative necks. OBJECTIVE: This review examines current evidence on optimal strategies for managing the N0 neck in oral cancer patients. METHODS: We discuss diagnostic modalities for detecting occult metastases, including clinical examination, conventional imaging (ultrasonography, computed tomography

Multimodality curative-intent treatment in NSCLC: an unprecedented era of change 2017-2025.

Curative-intent multimodality treatment-combining local treatments such as surgery or radiotherapy with systemic therapy-is the cornerstone of care in stage II-III non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Since 2017, the systemic therapy backbones with multimodality treatment have undergone a dramatic transformation, driven by a series of pivotal, practice-changing clinical trials. Immunotherapy and targeted therapies, previously confined to the advanced/metastatic setting, are now firmly embedded in curative-intent regimens. Maintenance immunotherapy following chemoradiation in unresectable stage

Unique Clinical Features of Imaging-Stage I Peripheral Lung Squamous Cell Carcinoma: A Retrospective Study.

The incidence of peripheral lung squamous cell carcinoma (p-LUSC) has increased in recent years, but the clinical features of early-stage p-LUSC remain unclear. In the present study, we aim to elucidate the general clinical features of p-LUSC by comparing it with peripheral lung adenocarcinoma (p-LUAD). Patients with p-LUSC or p-LUAD who were at an early imaging stage and underwent complete lobectomy with systematic lymph node dissection were included. The clinical characteristics of p-LUSC were elucidated through comparative analysis with p-LUAD, and independent prognostic factors for recurre

Pregnancy, cancer, and radiation-a modern refresher.

Cancer occurs in ∼1 per 1000 pregnancies; thousands of patients may require radiation procedures for diagnosis and treatment each year in the United States alone. This rare but high-risk scenario, coupled with fear of radiation, has created ambiguity in the ideal management of pregnant patients. Without a comprehensive guide for the use of radiation in imaging and treatment for pregnant cancer patients, it is difficult for providers to offer optimal patient-centered care without introducing disparities. The goal of this paper is to provide guidance on the use of radiation for screening, diagno

Pathologic upstaging after definitive transanal endoscopic surgery for cT1N0M0 rectal cancer: patterns of care and survival.

BACKGROUND: Transanal endoscopic surgery (TES) is an organ-preserving option for select patients with clinically T1N0M0 rectal adenocarcinoma that offers potential avoidance of total mesorectal excision (TME). Preoperative staging is imperfect at distinguishing tumor stage and assessing nodal status, leaving the potential for pathologic upstaging after surgery. Oncologic implications for upstaged individuals who do not undergo completion TME are poorly characterized. This study aims to quantify pathologic upstaging among patients who receive definitive TES, identify associated clinicopathologi

Partial breast irradiation versus whole breast irradiation after breast-conserving surgery in early-stage breast cancer: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Adjuvant radiotherapy for early-stage breast cancer has progressively shifted toward less extensive treatment approaches. Partial breast irradiation (PBI) has emerged as a safe and effective option for appropriately selected patients. AIM: To systematically compare PBI versus whole breast irradiation (WBI) in early-stage breast cancer with respect to acute and late toxicity, cosmetic outcomes, quality of life, local disease control, and survival. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of randomized clinical trials evaluating PBI delivered by any technique versus WBI in early

External validation of PREDICT Breast v3.1 for overall survival in international cohorts, including young and invasive lobular subgroups.

PURPOSE: PREDICT Breast is an online tool that provides survival predictions for patients with early-stage breast cancer, for different treatments after surgery. External validation is essential to assess model performance across populations and healthcare settings. We aimed to externally validate PREDICT using clinical practice data from the Netherlands, Sweden, and Slovenia. METHODS: We validated PREDICT in national populations (Netherlands, N = 221,636; Sweden, N = 84,928) and in two specific subgroups: patients with invasive lobular breast cancer (ILC) (Netherlands, N = 26,834; Sweden, N

Challenges and outcomes of breast reconstruction in advanced-stage breast cancer: a comprehensive review.

Post-mastectomy breast reconstruction plays a crucial role in the psychological well-being and long term quality of life of patients with breast cancer. However, its role in advanced stages (stages III-IV) remains debatable. To analyze the clinical outcomes and potential benefits of breast reconstruction in patients with advanced-stage breast cancer, a systematic review of studies on the reconstructive approach published between January 2018 and March 2025 was conducted. There is a marked paucity of studies focused on this topic, and most available data derive from small case series or observa

ESR Essentials: MRI-based T-staging in prostate cancer-practice recommendations by the European Society of Urogenital Radiology.

MRI-based T-staging in prostate cancer enables more precise and individualised treatment decisions compared with traditional clinical T-staging, yet inconsistent image acquisition, interpretation, and terminology limit reproducibility and clinical integration. This report recommends standardising MRI-based T-staging to strengthen its prognostic and therapeutic relevance. The prefix "mr" for MRI-based T-staging should be used, together with "extraprostatic extension" as the official radiologic term, replacing "extracapsular extension", to ensure consistency with pathology and the UICC TNM syste

Long-term outcomes and treatment response in early-stage invasive lobular carcinoma: insights from a nationwide population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC), the second most common breast cancer subtype, differs from invasive breast carcinoma of no special type (BC-NST) in biology, presentation, and treatment response. Evidence on its prognostic impact remains inconsistent. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Our nationwide, population-based study of stage I-III breast cancer diagnosed in Belgium (2008-2014) compared characteristics, treatment patterns, and overall survival (OS) between ILC and BC-NST. RESULTS: Of 51 815 eligible patients, 7593 (14.6%) had ILC. Compared with patients with BC-NST, patients with ILC
