Increased cognitive functioning in symptomatic Huntington's disease as revealed by behavioral and event-related potential indices of auditory sensory memory and attention.

Cognitive functions are thought to deteriorate globally in late stages of various neurodegenerative disorders. Here we describe that this general assumption is not justified and fails in Huntington's disease (HD). Presymptomatic gene mutation carriers (pHDs) and healthy controls performed worse compared with symptomatic HDs in an auditory signal detection task. During task performance, behavioral data and event-related potentials (ERPs) [i.e., MMN (mismatch negativity), P3a, and RON (reorienting negativity)] were recorded. Not only behavioral performance but also neurophysiological correlates

[Self-awareness of deficits in Huntington's and Parkinson's disease].

Impaired self-awareness of deficits has been referred to in literature as anosognosia, unawareness, denial of deficits and impaired insight. In this article we briefly present the terminology used in studies of impaired self-awareness in neurological disorders and we review the literature on self-awareness of deficits in Huntington's disease (HD) and Parkinson's diseases (PD) in terms of daily function, motor impairment, cognitive function and social-emotional function in both HD and PD. HD patients may exhibit impaired self-awareness of deficits in all domains, regardless of the cognitive sta

Electroacupuncture decreases nitric oxide synthesis in the hypothalamus of spontaneously hypertensive rats.

Acupuncture-related effects on autonomic function have been explored via biological and neurophysiologic studies. The hypothalamus, known to regulate the autonomic nervous system, is likely affected by acupuncture treatment that modulates sympathetic functions. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of electroacupuncture at the Jogsamni point (ST36, an acupoint known to modulate autonomic function) on expression of neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) in the hypothalamus of spontaneously hypertensive rat. Nitric oxide, which is produced by nNOS activity, plays an important role i

Nonspeech oral motor treatment issues related to children with developmental speech sound disorders.

PURPOSE: This article examines nonspeech oral motor treatments (NSOMTs) in the population of clients with developmental speech sound disorders. NSOMTs are a collection of nonspeech methods and procedures that claim to influence tongue, lip, and jaw resting postures; increase strength; improve muscle tone; facilitate range of motion; and develop muscle control. In the case of developmental speech sound disorders, NSOMTs are employed before or simultaneous with actual speech production treatment. METHOD: First, NSOMTs are defined for the reader, and there is a discussion of NSOMTs under the cat

[Rehabilitation of parkinsonian patients].

Although most parkinsonian patients greatly benefit from medical and/or surgical treatment, their clinical management should not be limited to these two interventions. Axial symptoms, freezing, postural instability, speech and swallowing problems may be drug-resistant, and disability may persist in spite of improvement of motor symptoms. A coordinate interdisciplinary approach facilitates the clinical management of the disease. Physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy may contribute to reduce impairment and improve quality of life; a psychological and social support of patients a

High-frequency oscillations in the somatosensory evoked potentials of patients with cortical myoclonus: pathophysiologic implications.

A small series of high-frequency wavelets overlapping the earliest part of the N20 wave (high-frequency oscillations, HFOs) can be observed in the somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEPs) of normal subjects after filtering then with a high-pass filter (>500 Hz). These HFOs have been related to interneuronal activity in the primary somatosensory cortex. In patients with cortical myoclonus there is a sensorimotor cortical hyperexcitability, expressed neurophysiologically as high-amplitude waves in the SSEPs (giant SSEPs). There have been contradicting reports in the literature on the changes in t

Persistence of high-dose oxaliplatin-induced neuropathy at long-term follow-up.

Oxaliplatin (L-OHP) has become a standard treatment for advanced colorectal cancer and a valid option for patients in the adjuvant setting. Compared with cisplatin, L-OHP has no renal toxicity, only mild hematological and gastrointestinal toxicity, while neurotoxicity is the limiting toxicity. This side effect has been described as a transient distal dysesthesia, enhanced by exposure to cold, and as a dose-related cumulative mild sensitive neuropathy. We studied two groups of patients (18 and 13) with advanced colorectal cancer, treated with median cumulative doses of L-OHP 862 mg/m2 and 1,033

Correlations between neuropsychological test results and P300 latency during silent-count and button-press tasks in post-traumatic brain injury patients.

To evaluate the correlations between memory function and intelligence and event-related potential, the P300 component for different tasks was studied for 30 post-traumatic brain injury patients (mean age 31.6 +/- 13.7 years; 23 male and 7 female). Memory function, intelligence, and depression were measured by using the Mini-Mental State Examination, the revised Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale and the Self-Rating Depression Scale, respectively. P300 latency was measured during silent-count and button-press tests at three midline scalp (Fz, Cz, and Pz) sites for all subjects by using an audito

Does the arousal system contribute to near death experience?

The neurophysiologic basis of near death experience (NDE) is unknown. Clinical observations suggest that REM state intrusion contributes to NDE. Support for the hypothesis follows five lines of evidence: REM intrusion during wakefulness is a frequent normal occurrence, REM intrusion underlies other clinical conditions, NDE elements can be explained by REM intrusion, cardiorespiratory afferents evoke REM intrusion, and persons with an NDE may have an arousal system predisposing to REM intrusion. To investigate a predisposition to REM intrusion, the life-time prevalence of REM intrusion was stud

Seeing red primes tomato: evidence for comparable priming from colour and colour name primes to semantically related word targets.

There is ample evidence that an independent processing stream exists that subserves the perception and appreciation of colour. Neurophysiological research has identified separate brain mechanisms for the processing of wavelength and colour, and neuropsychological studies have revealed selective colour disorders, such as achromatopsia, colour agnosia, and colour anomia. The aim of the present study is to investigate whether the perception of colour may, despite its independent processing, influence other cognitive functions. Specifically, we investigate the possibility that the perception of a

Electroencephalography and brain damage in preterm infants.

Electroencephalography (EEG) is a sensitive method for detection of brain injury in preterm infants. Although the acute and chronic EEG changes are mainly non-specific regarding type of damage, they correlate with later neurological and cognitive function. In infants developing brain white matter damage, acute EEG findings include depression of background activity and presence of epileptic seizure activity. The chronic EEG changes associated with white matter injury and abnormal neurological development include delayed maturation, and presence of abundant Rolandic sharp waves. Cognitive limita

Comparison of nerve conduction velocities of lower extremities between runners and controls.

Peripheral nerve injuries can occur in runners, but large numbers of nerve injuries remain subclinical. Identification of nerve injuries needs an understanding of common sites of entrapment in running. Fourteen asymptomatic male middle-distance runners and 14 non-active subjects participated in this study. The neurophysiologic study consisted of motor and sensory nerve conduction of medial and lateral plantar nerves, sensory nerve conduction of sural and superficial peroneal nerves, and motor nerve conduction of common peroneal nerve. Active range of motion and muscle strength assessment (dors

Language of dyspnea in panic disorder.

Dyspnea is a key symptom in panic attacks. This study investigated different types of dyspnea induced by the 35% CO2 challenge test given to patients with panic disorder (PD). The types of dyspnea provide room for possible conjectures on neurophysiological pathways involved in the experience of breathing discomfort in PD and in the panic-respiration connection. Factor analysis applied to the Dyspnea Questionnaire identified three main factors: breathing effort, sense of suffocation, and rapid breath. Factor scores for breathing effort and sense of suffocation significantly discriminated betwee

[Clinical and pathologic aspects of the impairment of cerebral blood flow in atherosclerotic carotid stenosis].

Based on clinical and neurophysiological investigations, triplex scanning of the carotid arteries the authors make a conclusion that early clinical forms of the ischemic diseases of the brain (IDB) in hemodynamically significant atherostenosis of the carotid arteries are characterized by certain neuropsychological and neurological complexes of symptoms dependent on the impairments of blood flow at the main and regional levels. The leading role of hypoperfusion was shown in the development of early forms of the cerebral blood flow impairments in patients with IDB. A significantly increased numb

Unaltered respiratory-related evoked potentials after acute diaphragm dysfunction in humans.

Respiratory muscles play an important role in the origin of respiratory sensations. Data dissecting the role of the diaphragm and other inspiratory muscles are scarce. This study aimed to determine the impact of diaphragm dysfunction following inspiratory resistive loading on respiratory-related evoked potentials considered as a neurophysiological substrate of certain types of respiratory sensations. Altogether, nine subjects aged 25-50 yrs (six females) participated in the study. Transdiaphragmatic pressure output of cervical magnetic stimulation (with subdivision in oesophageal and gastric c

Nonmuscular involvement in merosin-negative congenital muscular dystrophy.

The spectrum of nonmuscular involvement in six children with merosin-negative congenital muscular dystrophy is described. In all children, biochemical, neuroradiologic, cardiac, and neurophysiologic studies were performed. Cerebral structures that were myelinated at gestation, including internal capsule, corpus callosum, brainstem, and cerebellar white matter, demonstrated no abnormalities, whereas the periventricular and subcortical white matter, which were myelinated in the first postnatal year, demonstrated signs of leukoencephalopathy. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis revealed an elevated albu

Involvement of rat lateral septum-acetylcholine pressor system in central amygdaloid nucleus-emotional pressor circuit.

There is an emotional pressor circuit composed of nuclei controlling emotion and stress, which may be the neurophysiological basis for prolonged emotional stress inducing hypertension. The central amygdaloid nucleus (AC) is the most important in this circuit, which widely connects with the other nuclei via its CRF (corticotropin releasing factor)-ergic and SP (substance P)-ergic projection fibers. There is another pressor system composed of the lateral septum (SL), habenula (HB), locus coeruleus (LC), and rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVL); muscarinic receptors are involved in each connection
