We report intrathecal use of gadolinium DTPA for MRI of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). In two patients with leptomeningeal carcinomatosis, we injected 0.01 mmol gadolinium DTPA into the lateral ventricle via an Ommaya device. Coronal T1-weighted images of the head were obtained at 0.2 T prior to and after injection. There was pronounced enhancement of CSF close to the injection site, allowing good delineation of CSF and surrounding brain tissue. No side effects occurred. The diagnostic value of MR in the head and neck with special emphasis on the contrast medium Gd-DTPA will be demonstrated. A total of 1,260 patients underwent MR with different pulse sequences plain and with Gd-DTPA. The sequences were analyzed and compared with CT. Due to the different pattern of enhancement the contrast medium helped in differentiating malignant and benign tumors from other processes like cysts and inflammatory changes. Except lesions with small bony erosion and inflammatory changes of the salivary glands MR with Gd-DTPA proved to be diagnostically advantageous in all cases.

This study was undertaken to evaluate the success of triple therapy in peptic ulcer patients and ulcer relapses. One hundred and one consecutive Helicobacter pylori-positive peptic ulcer patients were assigned to an open trial with 2 weeks of treatment with colloidal bismuth subcitrate, amoxicillin, and metronidazole. At the 6-week follow-up only 1 duodenal ulcer was unhealed of 57 active ulcers, and H. pylori was found to be eradicated in 84% of the 100 subjects. MR imaging was used to investigate normal and abnormal meningeal enhancement, with an emphasis on meningeal carcinomatosis. Three groups of patients were studied on a 1.5-T system. In group 1, the normal meninges were examined in 20 patients and were found to show fine linear enhancement in short segments, especially in a parasagittal distribution.
