Obesity and thyroid gland.

Decreased thyroid function (both overt and subclinical) is more frequent in overweight and obese people but hypothyroidism as cause of obesity is rare. Borderline or slightly elevated values of thyrotropin without other signs of autoimmune inflammation (elevated antibodies, changes at ultrasonography) are mostly consequence of hormonal/cytokine reactions to obesity, especially to hyperleptinemia. However, they simultaneously represent metabolic and cardiovascular risk factor.

[Obese pregnant women and complications in relation to pregnancy and birth].

One third of the pregnant Danish women are overweight or obese. Maternal obesity is an independent risk factor for adverse maternal and foetal outcomes including infertility, miscarriage, congenital malformations, preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, complicated deliveries, caesarean section, macrosomia and childhood obesity. This article reviews the effect of maternal obesity on obstetric and neonatal outcomes and provides recommendations for management of obesity in pregnancy.

S-shaped ilio-mesenteric bypass in a young high risk patient.

Symptomatic chronic mesenteric ischemia is a rare condition. Several surgical and endovascular techniques have been described, but treatment is individualized according to the conditions of each patient. We report a successful superior mesenteric artery revascularization by using an S-shaped retrograde polytetrafluoroethylene ilio-mesenteric bypass graft in a young overweight patient with a history of two abdominal vascular operations and several comorbidities.

Prediabetes phenotypes: can aetiology and risk profile guide lifestyle strategies for diabetes prevention?

INTRODUCTION: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) continues to worsen globally alongside rise in obesity. Asymptomatic dysglycaemia, which precedes T2D, provides opportunities to identify those at risk and target prevention but prediabetes is highly variable. Not all with overweight develop dysglycaemia and not all with dysglycaemia are overweight. Important is the deposition of ectopic lipids in the pancreas, liver, and muscle. With no international definition, several prediabetes phenotypes exist, each based on one or more components of fasting glucose, postprandial glucose and/or HbA1c. AREAS COVERED: W…

Changes in abdominal adipose tissues and ectopic fat depots during pregnancy are dissociated from gestational weight gain.

OBJECTIVE: The study objective was to evaluate changes in abdominal adipose tissue and ectopic fat during pregnancy and their associations with gestational weight gain (GWG) in women with overweight/obesity. METHODS: This study was a secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial. Magnetic resonance scans were performed during gestational week (GW) 15, GW 32, and around birth to measure abdominal subcutaneous (SAT) and visceral (VAT) adipose tissues, liver fat, and muscle fat. Linear mixed models and multivariable linear regression analyses were utilized, adjusting for prepregnancy BMI, …

Factors Affecting Wound Healing after the Wide Surgical Excision of Hidradenitis Suppurativa Lesions.

Background: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic and inflammatory disease. Its management depends on the stage and extent of the disea … d previous or ongoing medical treatment (antibiotherapy or biologics) (p = 0.011). Obesity or being overweight did not impact the TTWC in multivariate analysis, although overweight was significant in univariate analysis. Conclusions: While smoking cessation remains important in the management of HS, it does not appear to be a prerequisite for successful surg …

Modulatory effect of sedentary behaviour on obesity and chronic low back pain: a cross-sectional study using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

OBJECTIVE: To explore whether sedentary behaviour could modulate the association between overweight or obesity and chronic low back pain (CLBP). DESIGN: A retrospective cross-sectional study. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: A total of 4289 participants in the US cohort from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were included. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES: CLBP was the outcome. RESULTS: After adjusting for confounding factors, an increased risk of CLBP was identified in people who were overweight (OR 1.41, 95% CI 1.13 to 1.76) and obesity (OR 1.48, 95% CI 1.01 to 2.18). N…

Impact of physiological parameters on the parotid gland fat fraction in a normal population.

Quantifying physiological fat tissue in the organs is important to further assess the organ's pathologic status. This study aimed to investigate the impact of body mass index (BMI), age, and sex on the fat fraction of normal parotid glands. Patients undergoing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of iterative decomposition of water and fat with echo asymmetry and least squares estimation (IDEAL-IQ) due to non-salivary gland-related disease were reviewed. Clinical information of individual patients was categorized into groups based on BMI (under/normal/overweight), age (age I/age II/age III), and s…

Association of the Severity of Hypertensive Disorders in Pregnancy with Birthweight, Childhood Obesity, and Blood Pressure at Age 7.

We aimed to examine the effects of various severities of hypertensive disorders in pregnancy on birthweight, blood pressure (BP), and body m … al age (aOR ranged from 1.27 to 2.77). Moreover, children of mothers in the mild group tended to be overweight/obese and had elevated diastolic BP. We concluded that the severity of hypertensive disorders had different effects on birthweight, childhood overweight, and BP.

OBJECTIVE: Metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is a poor attended disease, which has gained attention due the elevated number of cases in countries as Mexico, where the incidence is the number 4th globally. MAFLD develops in obese or overweighted individuals and is characterized by triglycerides accumulation in the liver, this condition can develop to hepatocellular carcinoma. Influence of BPA exposure, measured in saliva, on childhood weight.

INTRODUCTION: Endocrine disruptors such as bisphenol A (BPA), BPA glycidyl methacrylate, and other BPA acrylate-based derivatives have been related to type 2 diabetes, the metabolic syndrome, and obesity, among other metabolic disorders. The objective of this study is to examine the influence of BPA exposure by saliva analysis and daily physical activity on the risk of overweight/obesity in schoolchildren from southern Spain. METHODS: The study included 300 children (53.5% girls) aged 7-10 years. Participants completed a questionnaire with four sections: participant data, including demographi…

Could parental high-fat intake program the reproductive health of male offspring? A review.

High-fat diet (HFD) intake can cause overweight and obesity and has become a global public health concern in recent years. Nutritional adversity at vulnerable windows of development can affect developing cells and their functions, including germ cells. Evidence shows that parental HFD intake prior to conception and/or during gestation and lactation could program the reproductive health of male offspring, ultimately resulting in impairment of the first as well as subsequent generations. In male offspring, adipose tissue and hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis imbalance can impair the production…

Body mass index as a predictor of mortality in bronchiectasis: A nationwide population-based study.

INTRODUCTION: The prognosis of bronchiectasis is not well known. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between body mass index (BMI) and mortality in bronchiectasis using a large nationwide population-based cohort. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Using the National Health Insurance Service-Health Screening Cohort in Korea, individuals with bronchiectasis were identified from 2004 to 2006 and monitored for up to 10 years. Mortality in bronchiectasis was analyzed based on a BMI score <18.5 kg/m2 (underweight), 1.85-22.9 kg/m2 (normal weight), 23.0-24.9 kg/m2 (overweight), and >25.0 kg…
