Variation in behaviour can contribute to reproductive isolation by preventing gene flow among populations. Here, we tested the novel hypothesis that parental care, when dysregulated, can function as a reproductive isolating mechanism in three-spined stickleback fish (Gasterosteus aculeatus). In the typical 'common' stickleback ecotype, males provide care to their offspring by fanning with their pectoral fins and defending their nest. By contrast, a divergent 'white' stickleback ecotype has evolutionarily lost care and disperses embryos into the surrounding environment. We examined how paternal

Oligoasthenoteratozoospermia (OAT) is a complex reproductive health problem characterized by impaired sperm parameters. Autophagy serves critical functions in diverse stages of male reproduction and has been shown to be functionally active in mature ejaculate spermatozoa from healthy men. The present study aims to investigate the level of autophagic activity in spermatozoa from OAT patients and its association with embryo development following intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). 42 OAT men with healthy spouses and 21 age-matched fertile controls were included in the study. Following semen

Parental care is essential for social, behavioural, and neural development of offspring. Disruption of parental care, for example through parental separation, can negatively affect offspring development in rodents. While previous work has focused on maternal and paternal deprivation, the effects of cross-fostering, another form of parental-offspring instability, on brain development remain poorly understood. Such disruptions are thought to induce stress, which in turn can suppress neurogenesis and increases inflammation and apoptosis in the hippocampus, with effects that often differ between s

BACKGROUND: Down syndrome (DS) is the most common genetic cause of intellectual disability, results from trisomy 21 (T21). T21 can be regular or due to translocation, isochromosome, or mosaicism, among other chromosomal alterations. In Mexico, frequencies of these chromosomal variants reported internationally are used; therefore, national data are necessary.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the frequencies of cytogenetic findings in patients with DS referred to a research center in western Mexico over the past 31 years (1993-2024).
METHODS: Physical and digital records from the cytogenetics laborator

Male infertility remains an understudied yet significant contributor to global reproductive health challenges, with up to 50% of infertility cases involving a male factor and a large proportion still classified as idiopathic. Recent advances in generative artificial intelligence (AI), particularly large language models (LLMs), offer a transformative opportunity to tackle persistent gaps in understanding the genetic, epigenetic, and environmental determinants of male infertility. This chapter explores the scientific potential of LLMs and related AI technologies in accelerating discov-eries acro

Early-life gut microbiome assembly is a pivotal determinant of lifelong health; however, the integrated frameworks governing this process across developmental milestones remain insufficiently defined. This review establishes a multidimensional framework by delineating the crosstalk between the gut microbiome and the host throughout the preconception, prenatal, postpartum, and early childhood stages. We first highlight the emerging paradigm of biparental microbial contributions during the preconception period, detailing how paternal and maternal niches jointly prime offspring development. Movin

PURPOSE: Immunological response to paternal antigens in semen and sperm has been implicated in the aetiology of preeclampsia. Although donor sperm conception has been associated with increased preeclampsia risk, evidence specifically regarding IVF with donor sperm remains limited. We aimed to assess whether pregnancies achieved via IVF with donor sperm are associated with a higher risk of preeclampsia or perinatal complications compared to IVF pregnancies using partner sperm.
METHODS: This prospective registry-linkage study included women undergoing IVF using donor versus partner sperm betwee

INTRODUCTION: Birk-Barel syndrome (BIBARS), also known as KCNK9 imprinting syndrome, is an extremely rare genetic condition caused by pathogenic variants in the KCNK9 gene located on the long arm of chromosome 8 (8q24). This gene is paternally imprinted and therefore only expressed from the maternal allele. KCNK9 encodes for a member of the two-pore domain potassium channel (K2P) subfamily. BIBARS syndrome is characterized by congenital hypotonia and weakness of proximal muscles, intellectual disability, behavioural problems, dysmorphic features, feeding problems and epilepsy. The syndrome is

Ethylene glycol monomethyl ether (EGME) is a testicular germ cell toxicant that selectively targets spermatocytes. In rats, male-only EGME exposure reduces mating success and can lead to an increase in resorbed fetuses. In a previous study, 5-d exposure to 50, 60, or 75 mg/kg/d EGME in male rats led to a decrease in sperm motility and increase in retained spermatid heads with a lowest observed adverse effect level (LOAEL) of 75 mg/kg/d. At 60 mg/kg/d, EGME exposure altered the proportion of sperm small RNA reads mapped to different small RNA categories and the distribution of read lengths. To

Lupus nephritis, a severe manifestation of systemic lupus erythematosus, is a major contributor to morbidity and has significant implications for male reproductive health. Infertility in men with LN is multifactorial, resulting from disease-related immune dysregulation, renal impairment, gonadotoxic therapies such as cyclophosphamide, and the psychosocial burdens of chronic illness. Collectively, these factors impair spermatogenesis, disrupt the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, and contribute to erectile dysfunction, diminished libido, hormonal disturbances, and abnormal semen parameters.

Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 5 (MEN5) is a newly proposed hereditary syndrome caused by heterozygous germline loss-of-function mutations in the MAX gene, which encodes MYC-associated factor X (MAX). Initially only linked to pheochromocytoma/paraganglioma (PCC/PGL) syndrome, MAX mutations have also been associated with other tumors. This review synthesizes current knowledge on the discovery, pathogenesis, clinical features, diagnosis, and management of MEN5. The pathogenesis of MEN5 involves disruption of tumor suppressor MAX-MXD heterodimers in the context of MAX loss, leading to increase

Iron deficiency (ID) is the most widespread micronutrient deficiency globally and has been increasingly linked to disturbances in cellular redox balance and metabolic regulation. Emerging evidence indicates that parental nutritional status can influence offspring physiology through intergenerational programming mechanisms. However, the molecular pathways through which parental ID affects oxidative stress and epigenetic regulation in subsequent generations remain poorly understood. The present study investigated whether oxidative stress and altered expression of iron-dependent epigenetic regula

Executive functions (EF) are vulnerable in preterm children. Owing to methodological issues, inconsistent findings have left some questions unresolved. This study implemented a theory-guided, integrative EF assessment in preterm children. We also examined the impact of perinatal and sociodemographic features on EF disorder. A quasi-experimental sample of 56 preterm children (28-34 weeks' gestation) aged 7-9 underwent a multidimensional EF assessment, combining performance-based (Child Executive Functions Battery-CEF-B) and daily life measures (Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Functions-B

Hypophosphatasia (HPP) is the rare inborn-error-of-metabolism that features impaired mineralization of the skeleton and teeth due to a deactivating mutation or mutations of the gene ALPL which encodes the tissue-nonspecific isoenzyme of alkaline phosphatase (TNSALP). We report 17-year follow-up of twin sisters and a brother referred in middle-age for painful proximal femoral "stress fractures" and then diagnosed with HPP. They reported generalized muscle and bone pain, metatarsal fractures, arthropathy and, since childhood, tooth loss. Their concordant findings were explained by compound heter

Fetal/neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia (FNAIT) is a life-threatening bleeding disorder caused by maternal antibodies targeting a paternally inherited alloantigen present on the surface of fetal platelets. The human platelet alloantigen HPA-1a/HPA-1b, also known as the PlA1/PlA2 alloantigen, is the most frequently implicated HPA for causing FNAIT in Caucasians. A single Leu33Pro amino acid polymorphism residing within the plexin/semaphorin/integrin (PSI) domain of the integrin β3 subunit (platelet membrane glycoprotein (GP), GPIIIa) is responsible for generating the HPA-1a and HPA-1b epitop
