Impulsivity in pathological gambling: the antisocial impulsivist.

The construct of impulsivity has to date remained relatively unexplored in the pathological gambling literature. This is in spite of recent claims suggesting that impulsivity may be an important feature characterizing a subgroup of pathological gamblers who are claimed to suffer from a Multi-Impulse Personality Disorder. The present study examined the potential role of impulsivity using the Eysenck Impulsivity Scale among 115 pathological gamblers. Results indicate that heightened impulsivity is associated with the degree of severity of psychological and behavioural change in pathological gamb

Altered dopamine function in pathological gambling.

BACKGROUND: The possibility that monoaminergic neurotransmission is altered in pathological gambling was examined. METHODS: Monoamines and their metabolites were measured in CSF obtained at level L4-5 from ten pathological gamblers and seven controls. RESULTS: A decrease in dopamine and an increase in 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid and homovanilic acid was found. Noradrenaline and its metabolite 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylglycol was also increased but 5-hydroxytryptamine and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid were unchanged. CONCLUSION: It is suggested that the function of the dopaminergic system, po

The normal and pathological physiology of brain water.

The physicochemical properties of water enable it to act as a solvent for electrolytes, and to influence the molecular configuration and hence the function--enzymatic in particular--of polypeptide chains in biological systems. The association of water with electrolytes determines the osmotic regulation of cell volume and allows the establishment of the transmembrane ion concentration gradients that underlie nerve excitation and impulse conduction. Fluid in the central nervous system is distributed in the intracellular and extracellular spaces (ICS, ECS) of the brain parenchyma, the cerebrospin

Modern analysis of pathologic uterine rings.

A computerized medical record search of 61,406 live births from January 1, 1990, through December 31, 1994, identified 14 cases of pathologic uterine rings. This yielded an incidence of pathologic uterine rings of 0.02% of all live births. In a retrospective, matched study design, three control subjects having vaginal delivery and three having cesarean delivery were matched with each case of pathologic uterine ring for age, race, parity, estimated gestational age, single or multiple gestation, primary or repeat cesarean section, and indication for the cesarean delivery. Comparison with control

Rheumatoid nodules: MR/pathological correlation.

PURPOSE: To demonstrate the signal characteristics of subcutaneous rheumatoid nodules in correlation to their histopathologic features. METHOD: The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features of biopsy proven subcutaneous rheumatoid nodules are described in five patients with rheumatoid arthritis established by classic criteria. RESULTS: Two morphologic appearances of rheumatoid nodules were observed on MRI: one predominantly cystic, with enhancing peripheral component; and a second type which is predominantly solid, with uniform enhancement following gadolinium injection. CONCLUSION: Subcuta

[Pathological findings of the liver in Hansen's disease].

In leprosy patients, granulomatous lesion are often observed, not only in skin and nerve, but also other visceral organs such as liver, kidney, spleen and cardiovascular system. But for the development of drug therapy, there are very few cases we can see the acid-fast bacilli in the lesion these days. We have reviewed the histopathological lesions in the liver of leprosy patients who had been treated for long term, based on autopsy findings of 31 cases, including 24 cases with lepromatous leprosy (LL) and 7 cases with tuberculoid leprosy (TL). Except one case of LL with progressive stage, most

Diagnosis, neurobiology, and treatment of pathological gambling.

Pathological gambling is a disabling disorder that affects at least 2 1/2 million Americans and their families. Although pathological gambling has been characterized as an impulse control disorder, it has also been associated with compulsivity. Essential features of pathological gambling include constantly recurring gambling behavior that is maladaptive, in that personal, familial, and/or vocational endeavors are disrupted. Affective disorders and substance abuse often co-occur. Incidence of suicidality is extremely high. Despite the fact that this disorder is a widespread public health proble

Psychopathology in pathological gamblers seeking treatment.

High rates of psychiatric symptoms have been reported in pathological gamblers. This study of psychiatric comorbidity in pathological gamblers is the first to use structured psychiatric interviews assessing DSM-III-R Axis I and II disorders. The Structured Clinical Interview for DSM III-R (SCID-P, SCID-II) was administered to 40 (25 male, 15 male) pathological gamblers seeking outpatient treatment in Minnesota for gambling, and 64 (41 male, 23 female) controls. High lifetime rates of Axis I (92%) but not Axis II (25%) psychopathology were found in pathological gamblers as compared to controls.…

Pathological gambling in Louisiana: an epidemiological perspective.

A review of telephone interview data using the South Oaks Gambling Screen on a random sample of 1,818 Louisiana residents > 18 years indicated that 4.8% of adults > 21 years (approximately 122,500) have gambling disorders, compared to 14.4% of 18 to 21 year olds (approximately 21,000). Geographic distribution of gambling disorders shows equal statewide penetrance. Pathological gamblers are demographically distinct, more likely to be male, < 30 years, non-Caucasian, unmarried, and less likely to have graduated from high school than nonproblem gamblers. Two demographic clusters, males < 21 who p

Pathological crying and laughing: treatment with sertraline.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of sertraline for treating pathological laughing and crying after stroke. DESIGN: Case series. SETTING: Inpatient rehabilitation units of a community and a tertiary-care hospital. PATIENTS: One patient was a 62-year-old right-handed man who had two strokes approximately 2 years apart and had computed tomography consistent with a cerebral infarct involving the left middle cerebral artery branches in the left parietal lobe. A second patient was a 72-year-old right-handed man who had a right middle cerebral artery infarct. He had a questionable history of de

Pathologic fracture secondary to subungual melanoma.

Subungual melanoma is uncommon, and delays in diagnosis and misdiagnosis occur frequently. We describe a 61-year-old black male who presented with a non-healing area in his left thumb nailbed with many of the features of subungual melanoma. However, the patient also had a pathologic fracture of the distal phalanx, leading to some initial confusion about the diagnosis. Despite aggressive multimodality therapy, the disease rapidly progressed, resulting in the patient's death. Pathologic fracture due to subungual melanoma may indicate a particularly poor prognosis.

Pathologic study of a rabbit model for shigellosis.

A nonsurgical rabbit model of enteric Shigella infection was developed for studying the pathogenesis and immunology of shigellosis and for evaluating Shigella vaccine candidates. In this model, rabbits are made susceptible to Shigella infection by a pre-inoculation conditioning procedure consisting of a 36-h nonfeeding period, with 250 mg of tetracycline administered in 250 ml of drinking water, 75 mg of cimetidine given intravenously, and two 15-ml doses of 5% sodium bicarbonate given orally immediately before orogastric administration of the bacterial inoculum. Lastly 2 ml of tincture of opi

Pathological features of hereditary prostate cancer.

The aim of this study was to characterize the pathological features of hereditary prostate cancer, a recently recognized variant of prostate cancer with an autosomal dominant inheritance of a rare highly penetrant gene associated with early onset of disease. We compared the histology at radical prostatectomy of clinical stage T2 prostate cancer, including its relationship to prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia, in men with a family history of prostate cancer to those without a family history of prostate cancer. Three cohorts (hereditary, familial and sporadic) were identified based on pedigree
