Resting electroencephalogram asymmetry and posttraumatic stress disorder.

The valence-arousal (W. Heller, 1993) and approach-withdrawal (R. J. Davidson, 1998a) models hypothesize that particular patterns of hemispheric brain activity are associated with specific motivational tendencies and psychopathologies. We tested several of these predictions in two groups-a posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and a "supercontrol" group, selected to be maximally different from those with PTSD. Contrary to almost all hypotheses, individuals with PTSD did not differ from controls on resting electroencephalogram (EEG) asymmetry. Particular aspects of PTSD were also not related to

Cigarette smoking and interest in quitting among consumers at a Psychiatric Disability Rehabilitation and Support Service in Victoria.

OBJECTIVE: To gather information on smoking rates and interest in smoking cessation among consumers at a Psychiatric Disability Rehabilitation and Support Service (PDRSS). METHOD: A questionnaire was offered to all consumers at Neami Victoria by support staff in March 2007. Two hundred and eighty people (81%) completed the survey. Relationships between categorical variables were analysed using Fischer's exact test (p=0.05). RESULTS: Sixty-two per cent of consumers were smokers. Twelve per cent had previously quit smoking. PDRS consumers smoked 50% more than the general population and high ra

Induced rumination dampens executive processes in dysphoric young adults.

Self-focused, analytical mental rumination constitutes a central process in depression. It has been hypothesized that such rumination depletes executive resources that are necessary for an efficient cognitive regulation of emotion and behavior. However, most of the research supporting this hypothesis is of correlational nature. The present study examined the effects of induced rumination versus distraction on executive capacities in dysphoric and nondsyphoric college students. Executive functioning was measured with the Stroop task. Results indicate that induced rumination decreases inhibition

A DSM-IV-referenced screening instrument for preschool children: the Early Childhood Inventory-4.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the validity of the Early Childhood Inventory-4 (ECI-4), a parent and teacher rating scale designed to screen for DSM-IV emotional and behavioral disorders. METHOD: The convergent, divergent, and discriminant validity and clinical utility of the ECI-4 was studied in a sample of 224 consecutive referrals (3-6-year-old children) to a child psychiatric outpatient clinic. RESULTS: The ECI-4 demonstrated adequate criterion validity for the most common disorders (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, pervasive developmental disorder) when co

Assessing dissociation as a risk factor for posttraumatic stress disorder: a study of adult offspring of holocaust survivors.

Dissociative symptoms are frequently present in trauma survivors with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, the possibility that dissociative symptoms may comprise a risk factor for the development of PTSD has not been examined. The current research investigates this possibility by evaluating dissociative symptoms in a group of adult offspring of Holocaust survivors, whom we have previously shown to be at increased risk of PTSD. Eighty-seven Holocaust survivor offspring and 39 comparison participants completed the Dissociative Experiences Scale, and assessments of trauma exposure, psy

Depression, anxiety, and the gastrointestinal system.

Functional disorders of the digestive system, such as irritable bowel syndrome, are often associated with affective disorders, such as depression, anxiety, panic, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Some of these associations are observed not only in clinical populations, but also in population-based samples, suggesting a relationship with pathophysiologic mechanisms underlying both gastrointestinal (GI) dysfunction and certain affective disorders. Sustained and acute life-threatening stressors play an important role in the onset and modulation of GI symptoms as well as in the developmen

Personality dimensions and substance misuse: relationships in adolescents, mothers and fathers.

The research addressed the question of whether relationships exist between personality dimensions, antisocial behavior, and alcohol or other substance misuse (AOSM) in adolescents and in their fathers and mothers, who often also have histories of AOSM. One hundred male adolescents (mean age 15.8 years) entering a residential treatment center for youths with AOSM, their mothers (n = 88, mean age 39.4 years), their fathers (n = 36, mean age 44.9 years), and community controls (n = 100 adolescents, mean age 16.5 years; n = 96 mothers, mean age 43.8 years; n = 87 fathers, mean age 45.9 years) were

The undertreatment of dysthymia.

BACKGROUND: Dysthymia is a chronic depressive condition that is quite prevalent. This condition can exact a significant toll on the general health and quality of life in the affected individual. Despite the frequency and consequences of dysthymia, however, the condition is often not diagnosed or treated. We present data on prior treatment from 410 patients with DSM-III-R dysthymia, primary type, early onset without concurrent major depression. METHOD: Axis I and II diagnoses were made by using the Structured Clinical Interviews for DSM-III-R, Patient Version (SCID-P) and SCID II for Personali

Transdiagnostic inflammatory and oxidative biomarkers with predictive capacity of self-injurious behavior in impulsive and unstable disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Alterations in inflammatory processes have previously been reported in impulsive and unstable disorders, as well as in other psychiatric conditions. In order to investigate transdiagnostic biomarkers associated with various phenotypic features of these disorders, this study is designed to identify biomarkers of inflammatory and oxidative endophenotypes related to autolytic behavior. METHODS: Peripheral blood mononuclear cells were collected from 35 patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD), 29 patients with restrictive eating disorder (rED), 21 patients with purging ea

Influence of gender on attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in children referred to a psychiatric clinic.

OBJECTIVE: The substantial discrepancy in the male-to-female ratio between clinic-referred (10 to 1) and community (3 to 1) samples of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) suggests that gender differences may be operant in the phenotypic expression of ADHD. In this study the authors systematically examined the impact of gender on the clinical features of ADHD in a group of children referred to a clinic. METHOD: The study included 140 boys and 140 girls with ADHD and 120 boys and 122 girls without ADHD as comparison subjects. All subjects were systematically assessed w

Use of benzodiazepines and detoxification with methadone.

RATIONALE: Benzodiazepines are used as anti anxiety drugs, as well as in adjunct treatment for a range of neurological and psychiatric disorders. Abusive patterns of use were increasingly reported and building evidence points to prevalence of benzodiazepines abuse, on one hand as well as to their common abuse in combination with other drugs such as opioids, most frequently. OBJECTIVE: The main objective of this research is to conduct a systematic study on the behavior profile of a patient admitted to a prison hospital, who is a benzodiazepines user consecutive to admission into a methadone ad

Neurochemical, Neurocircuitry, and Psychopathological Mechanisms of PTSD: Emerging Pharmacotherapies and Clinical Perspectives.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating psychiatric condition triggered by exposure to traumatic events, with complex neurobiological anomalies that remain incompletely understood. This review aims to comprehensively explore the neurocircuitry, neurochemical dysregulation, and emerging pharmacological targets associated with PTSD, offering a consolidated framework for developing more effective treatments. Particular emphasis is employed on the role of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, monoamines, glutamate, GABAergic, and the orexinergic system, as well as emerging

Altered Gastrointestinal Interoception in Anorexia Nervosa Predicts Relapse.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a deadly psychiatric disorder, yet relapse remains common after weight restoration and no objective tools exist to track recovery. AN involves profound disturbances of gastrointestinal interoception, but no clinical tests assess this dysfunction. In this single-blind, randomized-crossover study, 62 weight-restored females with restrictive AN and 57 matched healthy comparisons completed a gastrointestinal detection task using an ingestible vibrating capsule while behavioral, electroencephalographic, and peripheral physiological signals were recorded. AN participants sho

Influence of dietary patterns in the pathophysiology of Huntington's Disease: A literature review.

Huntington's disease (HD), a rare autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disease, causes the gradual deterioration of neurons in the basal ganglia, specifically in the striatum. HD displays a wide range of symptoms, from motor disturbances such as chorea, dystonia, and bradykinesia to more debilitating symptoms such as cognitive decline, behavioral abnormalities, and psychiatric disturbances. Current research suggests the potential use of dietary interventions as viable strategies for slowing the progression of HD. Most notably, the Mediterranean, vegan, carnivore, paleo, and ketogenic diets hav

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and post-GWAS analyses of impulsivity: A systematic review.

Impulsivity is related to a host of mental and behavioral problems. It is a complex construct with many different manifestations, most of which are heritable. The genetic compositions of these impulsivity manifestations, however, remain unclear. A number of genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and post-GWAS analyses have tried to address this issue. We conducted a systematic review of all GWAS and post-GWAS analyses of impulsivity published up to December 2023. Available data suggest that single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in more than a dozen of genes (e.g., CADM2, CTNNA2, GPM6B) are as

Clinical characterization of a novel ATP1A2 p.Gly615Glu mutation in nine family members with familial hemiplegic migraine.

Familial hemiplegic migraine type 2 results from pathogenic variants in the ATP1A2 gene, which encodes for a catalytic subunit of sodium/potassium ATPase. This extremely rare autosomal dominant disorder manifests with a spectrum of symptoms, most commonly pure hemiplegic phenotype, epilepsy, and/or intellectual disability. In this study, we detail the clinical features and genetic analysis of nine patients from a large family spanning four generations, with all carrying a previously unreported likely pathogenic variant, p.Gly615Glu, in ATP1A2, compatible with a diagnosis of familial hemiplegic
