Evaluating the impact of a prison smoking ban on the cardiovascular health of men in a UK prison.

PURPOSE: Smoking rates are known to be higher amongst those committed to prison than the general population. Those in prison suffer from high rates of comorbidities that are likely to increase their risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), making it more difficult to manage. In 2016, a tobacco ban began to be implemented across prisons in England and Wales, UK. This study aims to measure the effect of the tobacco ban on predicted cardiovascular risk for those quitting smoking on admission to prison. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: Using data from a prevalence study of CVD in prisons, the authors ha

Dietary protein intake and obesity-associated cardiometabolic function.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: High-protein intake is commonly recommended to help people manage body weight. However, high-protein intake could have adverse health consequences. Here we review the latest findings concerning the effect of high-protein intake on cardiometabolic health. RECENT FINDINGS: Calorie-reduced, high-protein, low-carbohydrate diets lower plasma glucose in people with type 2 diabetes (T2D). However, when carbohydrate intake is not markedly reduced, high-protein intake often does not alter plasma glucose and increases insulin and glucagon concentrations, which are risk factors for T2

Epidemiological and pathological characteristics of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis from Baluchistan Province of Pakistan.

Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (CL) is considered a neglected tropical disease which in Pakistan can now be considered as a growing public health problem. The exact figures on the magnitude of the disease are lacking both at the national and regional level and only a few health centres are available for diagnosis of CL. The present study was designed to identify the epidemiology of CL infection from August 2018 to December 2019 and to assess clinical aspects of CL in Baluchistan Province of Pakistan. A total of 4072 clinically suspected CL cases were analysed statistically. The highest number of CL c

Human health in relation to exposure to solar ultraviolet radiation under changing stratospheric ozone and climate.

The Montreal Protocol has limited increases in the UV-B (280-315 nm) radiation reaching the Earth's surface as a result of depletion of stratospheric ozone. Nevertheless, the incidence of skin cancers continues to increase in most light-skinned populations, probably due mainly to risky sun exposure behaviour. In locations with strong sun protection programs of long duration, incidence is now reducing in younger age groups. Changes in the epidemiology of UV-induced eye diseases are less clear, due to a lack of data. Exposure to UV radiation plays a role in the development of cataracts, pterygiu

Managing emerging transnational public health security threats: lessons learned from the 2014 West African Ebola outbreak.

BACKGROUND: Pandemics pose significant security/stability risks to nations with fragile infrastructures. We evaluated characteristics of the 2014 West African Ebola outbreak to elucidate lessons learned for managing transnational public health security threats. METHODS: We used publically available data to compare demographic and outbreak-specific data for Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Liberia, including key indicator data by the World Health Organization. Pearson correlation statistics were calculated to compare country-level infrastructure characteristics with outbreak size and duration. RESUL

Capacity-oriented approaches to developing childhood obesity interventions: a systematic review.

Capacity-oriented approaches to health interventions seek to empower the target population or community to manage the health issue themselves using resources they can control. Positive deviance, resilience and asset-based approaches are three such methods of developing and implementing health interventions. This study aimed to review the efficacy of interventions explicitly applying these methods in addressing childhood obesity using adiposity as the primary outcome, measured by standardized body mass index. The search strategy was developed and implemented across four electronic databases. Of

Strategies to reduce the harmful effects of extreme heat events: a four-city study.

Extreme heat events (EHEs) are becoming more intense, more frequent and longer lasting in the 21st century. These events can disproportionately impact the health of low-income, minority, and urban populations. To better understand heat-related intervention strategies used by four U.S. cities, we conducted 73 semi-structured interviews with government and non-governmental organization leaders representing public health, general social services, emergency management, meteorology, and the environmental planning sectors in Detroit, MI; New York City, NY; Philadelphia, PA and Phoenix, AZ-cities sel

Perinatally acquired HIV infection in adolescents from sub-Saharan Africa: a review of emerging challenges.

Worldwide, more than three million children are infected with HIV, 90% of whom live in sub-Saharan Africa. As the HIV epidemic matures and antiretroviral treatment is scaled up, children with HIV are reaching adolescence in large numbers. The growing population of adolescents with perinatally acquired HIV infection living within this region presents not only unprecedented challenges but also opportunities to learn about the pathogenesis of HIV infection. In this Review, we discuss the changing epidemiology of paediatric HIV and the particular features of HIV infection in adolescents in sub-Sah

The current state of bioterrorist attack surveillance and preparedness in the US.

The use of biological agents as weapons to disrupt established structures, such as governments and especially larger urban populations, has been prevalent throughout history. Following the anthrax letters sent to various government officials in the fall of 2001, the US has been investing in prevention, surveillance, and preparation for a potential bioterrorism attack. Additional funding authorized since 2002 has assisted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Department of Health and Human Services, and the Environmental Protection Agency to invest in preventative research measure

The health-related quality of life of adults with Gaucher's disease receiving enzyme replacement therapy: results from a retrospective study.

Few studies have reported on the effect of Gaucher's disease on patient-reported, health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and we do not know how the HRQoL burden of Gaucher's disease compares to that of other chronic conditions, what areas of HRQoL are most affected or how the course of change in HRQoL compares with that observed for other conditions or for the general adult population. The purpose of this study was to estimate (1) the HRQoL burden associated with Gaucher's disease managed by enzyme replacement therapy (ERT), (2) recalled changes in HRQoL since ERT initiation and (3) risk facto

Demographic characteristics, medical needs and utilisation of antenatal care among pregnant undocumented migrants living in Denmark between 2011 and 2017.

Introduction: An estimated 22,900-28,900 individuals live undocumented in Denmark, of whom many are women of reproductive age. Undocumented migrants in Denmark who are pregnant only have legal rights to health care in emergencies, which may lead to under-utilisation of antenatal care, despite the possibility of these women seeking antenatal care through informal networks. This study aimed to describe the demographics, general medical needs and prevalence of induced abortions among pregnant undocumented migrant women. Further, we aimed to investigate if the women received antenatal services as

An Internet of Things-Based Audio and Radio Connected System Supporting Older Adults With Physical and Cognitive Health Challenges: Qualitative Stakeholder-Informed Design Study.

BACKGROUND: Older adults managing chronic illnesses, such as cancer and Alzheimer disease and related dementias (ADRD), often experience significant physical or cognitive impairments that hinder daily activities and increase caregiver burden. Smart Internet of Things (IoT) technologies offer promising solutions by enabling passive monitoring, timely reminders, and personalized support at home. However, these technologies must be carefully tailored to accommodate users' individualized needs and preferences. OBJECTIVE: This formative qualitative study aimed to explore stakeholder perspectives,

Post-earthquake monitoring of drinking-water quality and health risk in Kahramanmaraş Province, Türkiye: a two-timepoint screening assessment.

The February 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes damaged water-supply infrastructure, but post-earthquake drinking-water quality and health risk in the epicentral region remain poorly characterized. This study assessed trace element contamination and cumulative human health risk in municipal drinking water from all 11 districts of Kahramanmaraş Province at ~ 18 (August 2024) and ~ 24 months (February 2025) post-earthquake, using ICP-MS, the Water Quality Index, deterministic/probabilistic (Monte Carlo) health risk assessment, and multivariate statistics. All concentrations remained below drinking-w
