Social Contact: Next Steps in an Effective Strategy to Mitigate the Stigma of Mental Illness.

People living with mental illnesses and their families may conceal their conditions to avoid prejudice and discrimination. Stigma often prevents people from receiving adequate health care and other social support services which could exacerbate social and health consequences such as unemployment, homelessness, substance use, and compulsory hospitalization. In this paper, we discuss social contact as a promising anti-stigma strategy for enhancing social interactions among people with mental illnesses, their families, and those without mental illnesses. In particularly, we consider next steps fo

Influence of Health-Related Status and Social Activities on Depressive Symptoms in Korean Older Adults Who Live Alone.

The current study aimed to explore predictors of depressive symptoms in Korean older adults who live alone using data from the 2017 National Survey of Older Koreans. Participants were 2,258 adults (females, n = 1,838 [81.4%]; males, n = 420 [18.6%]) aged ≥65 years (mean = 75.9, SD = 6.8 years). Multiple hierarchical regression analysis indicated that perceived health status, instrumental activities of daily living (IADL), social gatherings, interaction frequency with children living separately, income quintile, religion, and education were significant predictors of depressive symptoms. In part

Trajectories of Disease Accumulation Using Electronic Health Records.

Multimorbidity is a major problem for patients and health services. However, we still do not know much about the common trajectories of disease accumulation that patients follow. We apply a data-driven method to an electronic health record dataset (CPRD) to analyse and condense the main trajectories to multimorbidity into simple networks. This analysis has never been done specifically for multimorbidity trajectories and using primary care based electronic health records. We start the analysis by evaluating temporal correlations between diseases to determine which pairs of disease appear signif

SARS preparedness. Revisiting the procedures to protect staff and help prevent or contain an outbreak.

Last year, more than 8,000 people worldwide contracted severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), leading to 774 deaths. Although transmission of the disease was quickly controlled, with the outbreak declared over by July, there is concern that SARS could in fact be a seasonal disease and that another outbreak could occur in 2004. In early January, Chinese health officials confirmed the first non-laboratory-related SARS case since the initial outbreak was contained. The threat of another outbreak underscores the importance of having a response plan in place to safeguard the health of your commu

Introducing the female condom through the public health sector: experiences from South Africa.

The successful implementation of new public health policy is influenced by provider preparedness and user acceptability of the new intervention. This paper describes the development and implementation of a participatory Training of Trainers (TOT) programme as a precursor to launch the South African government's female-initiated HIV prevention strategies in public health clinics. Three hundred peer-trainees from throughout South Africa were trained through a comprehensive, modular and interactive three-day workshop. The workshop content included: HIV/AIDS knowledge, beliefs and attitudes; value

The Intersection of Human Rights, HIV and Sex Work: Implications for Ending AIDS in Thailand by 2030.

INTRODUCTION: Sex work significantly shapes the Thai economy and the HIV epidemic, yet its criminalization restricts access to health services and exacerbates human rights violations. This study examines experiences of stigma, discrimination, gender-based violence (GBV) and incarceration among sex workers (SWs), exploring how these factors intersect with HIV services. This research is a component of a larger study investigating factors associated with pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) uptake among SWs in Thailand. METHODS: We conducted a post hoc analysis of a cross-sectional survey (September-

Hospital admissions resulting from unsafe abortion: estimates from 13 developing countries.

BACKGROUND: Complications from unsafe abortion are believed to account for the largest proportion of hospital admissions for gynaecological services in developing countries. The WHO estimates that one in eight pregnancy-related deaths result from unsafe abortions. The social stigma and legal restrictions associated with abortion in many countries means that data on the magnitude of this problem are scarce; this article estimates the rate and numbers of hospital admissions resulting from unsafe abortions in developing countries to help quantify the problem. METHODS: National estimates of abort

On the go with Toe & Flow: Private Clinic Design and Flow.

Lower extremity amputation secondary to diabetes and/or peripheral artery disease is a significant health issue globally. Many amputation prevention programs exist in academic settings; however, given the increasing administrative burdens associated with large institutions, it can be challenging to develop and maintain such programs in the modern era. Private amputation prevention clinics may be a viable alternative, allowing for greater control over services provided and better ability to meet patient needs. HOPE Vascular and Podiatry (https://hcic.io/), a private amputation prevention clinic

Incorporating couples-based approaches into HIV prevention for gay and bisexual men: opportunities and challenges.

Thirty years after the beginning of the HIV epidemic, gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (collectively called MSM) bear a disproportionate burden of HIV in the United States and continue to acquire a distressingly high number and proportion of new infections. Historically, HIV prevention for MSM has been focused on individual-level behavior change, rarely intervening with MSM as part of a couple. Yet, an estimated 33–67% of HIV infections among MSM are acquired from primary sexual partners, suggesting that work with MSM as couples could be an important contributor to prevention

Characterization of social frailty in survivors of sepsis: a multicenter qualitative investigation.

OBJECTIVE: Social frailty is a concept emerging in the older adult literature; it describes a progressive state of vulnerability characterized by a loss of the resources needed to fulfill basic social needs. Social frailty and vulnerability are known to negatively affect physical outcomes and mortality, resulting in higher health care costs and resource use. Social frailty after acute and critical illness has not been described and might be an important mechanism that prevents full recovery. Using multicenter qualitative data, we sought to establish if social frailty was important during recov

Lived sanitation experiences in informal and formal settlements in Nairobi, Kenya: A comparative study through the lens of the Human Right to Sanitation.

Urban sanitation is essential for health and well-being, yet provision remains deeply unequal, particularly in informal settlements. This study compares lived sanitation experiences across Nairobi's informal and formal settlements and examines how water insecurity - too much, too little, too dirty water - intersects with sanitation. We combined eight focus group discussions (n = 65 participants) with household surveys (n = 545) to analyse disparities across Human Right to Sanitation (HRtS) normative content dimensions of availability, accessibility, quality, safety, affordability, and acceptab

Addressing scabies among street children in Ethiopia: an ethnographic study of acceptable interventions by prospective recipients and deliverers.

INTRODUCTION: Scabies is a neglected tropical disease that affects the physical, socioeconomic, and psychological wellbeing of patients. Street children, due to poor living conditions and social marginalization, are at increased risk of infestation and face significant barriers to access healthcare services. Various interventions to control scabies have been suggested and implemented, but few have been based on the needs and viewpoints of the street children themselves. Drawing on the theoretical framework of acceptability (TFA), this article explores the interventions that street children, pa

A randomized comparative-effectiveness study of two enhanced prenatal care models for low-income pregnant people: Engaging Mothers & Babies; Reimagining Antenatal Care for Everyone (EMBRACE).

BACKGROUND: Improving perinatal mental health and care experiences and preventing adverse maternal and infant outcomes are essential prenatal care components, yet existing services often miss the mark, particularly for low-income populations. An enhanced group prenatal care program, "Glow! Group Prenatal Care and Support," was developed in California's Central Valley in response to poor perinatal mental health, disrespectful care experiences, and high rates of adverse birth outcomes among families with low incomes. METHODS: Engaging Mothers & Babies; Reimagining Antenatal Care for Everyone (E

Increased suicide risk of psychiatric patients following the recent utilization of health care services: results from a nationwide cohort study in South Korea.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to examine whether and to what degree the suicide risk of psychiatric patients is associated with psychiatric and non-psychiatric health service utilization. METHODS: We selected incident psychiatric patients, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorders, borderline personality disorder, depressive disorders, other affective disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder patients, in 2007-2010 and followed them up until 2017 based on the data linkage between the Korean National Health Insurance and National Death Registry. We analyzed the time-dependent association betw

Oral and Inactivated Polio Vaccine Coverage and Determinants of Coverage Inequality Among the Most At-Risk Populations in Ethiopia.

Combining oral (OPV) and inactivated (IPV) poliovirus vaccines prevents importation of poliovirus and emergence of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus. We measured the coverage with IPV and third dose of OPV (OPV-3) and identified determinants of coverage inequality in the most at-risk populations in Ethiopia. A national survey representing 10 partly overlapping underserved populations-pastoralists, conflict-affected areas, urban slums, hard-to-reach settings, developing regions, newly formed regions, internally displaced people (IDPs), refugees, and districts neighboring international and

Harm reduction readiness for illicit IV drug use among safety-net primary care practices in the San Fernando Valley.

BACKGROUND: Harm reduction is an accumulation of strategies aimed at preventing adverse health outcomes associated with illicit substance use. Several harm reduction programs and services exist within Los Angeles County (LAC), however their success relies in part on the application of harm reduction principles by local primary care providers serving patients with substance use disorders. This study aims to assess the readiness of patient-centered medical homes in the San Fernando Valley to provide effective harm reduction to patients who use injection drugs and identify barriers to doing so.
