Clinical Practice Guideline: Assessment and Treatment of Adolescents and Young Adults With Substance Use Disorders and Problematic Substance Use (Excluding Tobacco).

OBJECTIVE: To enhance the quality of care and clinical outcomes for adolescents with substance use disorder (SUD) and problematic substance use (PSU). The aims are 2-fold: (1) to summarize empirically based guidance about the psychosocial, behavioral, and psychopharmacologic treatment of SUDs and PSU in adolescents and young adults; and (2) to summarize expert-based guidance about the assessment and clinical management of these disorders. METHOD: Statements about the treatment of SUD/PSU are based upon empirical evidence derived from a critical systematic review of the scientific literature c

Associations between genetic predisposition to mental health problems and academic achievement: a developmental perspective using two population-based cohorts.

BACKGROUND: Children's cognitive abilities play an important role throughout their academic career, but recent studies highlight the negative impacts of aggression, inattention, and impulsivity on academic success. These behaviors and traits are central to most externalizing (EXT) and neurodevelopmental (NDD) problems, which are substantially genetically influenced. We examined the mechanisms by which high levels of genetic predispositions to EXT and NDD problems associate with elevated mental health symptoms and subsequently lead to lower levels of academic achievement in two developmental pe

The association of type of cannabis product used and frequency of use with problematic cannabis use in a sample of young adult cannabis users.

UNLABELLED: Research exploring patterns and predictors of problematic cannabis use behaviors among young adults is limited. This knowledge is essential for intervening to prevent abuse and dependence outcomes. METHODS: Young adult cannabis users (Mage = 19.2[SD = 0.8]) in Southern California (N = 1007) were classified by patterns of problematic cannabis use from the Cannabis Abuse Screening Test, using Latent Class Analysis. Multinomial regression evaluated the association of frequency of use (no past 30 day use, infrequent [use on 1-2 of past 30 days], semi-frequent [use on 3-9 of the past 3

The prevalence of sleep problems in emergency medical technicians.

PURPOSE: To investigate the prevalence, demographic, and work associations of self-reported sleep complaints in US emergency medical technicians (EMTs) METHODS: The mailed 2005 Longitudinal Emergency Medical Technician Attributes and Demographics Study (LEADS) questionnaire was distributed to selected EMTs that included 35 sleep-related questions. Questions were adapted from previously validated sleep medicine surveys, including the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), and were used to estimate the prevalence of different sleep problems. These sleep problems were analyzed in relation to demographi

Sleep problems and daytime somnolence in a German population-based sample of snoring school-aged children.

Habitual snoring is associated with daytime symptoms like tiredness and behavioral problems. Its association with sleep problems is unclear. We aimed to assess associations between habitual snoring and sleep problems in primary school children. The design was a population-based cross-sectional study with a nested cohort study. The setting was twenty-seven primary schools in the city of Hannover, Germany. Habitual snoring and sleep problems were assessed in primary school children using an extended version of Gozal's sleep-disordered breathing questionnaire (n = 1144). Approximately 1 year late

Physically aggressive conspiracy believers often faced various psycho-social problems: Findings from a longitudinal population-based study.

OBJECTIVES: Psychosocial problems are positively associated with beliefs in conspiracy theories and physically aggressive behavior that are mutually related. Yet, it is unknown if adults with (a higher number of) these problems are more often aggressive conspiracy believers, non-physically aggressive conspiracy believers and aggressive non-believers than non-physically aggressive non-believers. The present study aims to fill this gap of knowledge. METHODS: Data was extracted from surveys conducted with the Dutch population-based LISS panel assessing six pre-existing psychosocial problems (sev

Limited detection of Gulf War illness-like behavioral phenotypes in Charles River male Sprague-Dawley rats across multiple chemical and stress exposure paradigms.

Gulf War illness (GWI) is characterized by a range of neurological and neuropsychiatric symptoms, including chronic pain, fatigue, mood problems, and cognitive impairment. The pathophysiology is associated with war-related environmental chemical exposure and psychological stress, which are known to disrupt glutamatergic synaptic structure and function. The original objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of LH-001, an investigational compound designed to enhance tripartite glutamatergic synapses, in a rat model of GWI. We initially attempted to induce GWI-like behavioral phenotype

Reading Incivility Through Camp: Moral Binaries in Nursing Education.

In the United States context, incivility in nursing education is widely studied as a behavioral problem to be measured and remedied. In contrast, civility has been conceptualized as a professional virtue that is foundational to nursing identity. Together, these civility and incivility orientations sustain a moral binary for nursing education in which civility functions as virtue and incivility as its violation. This paper re-orients the discourse by reading incivility through camp. Drawing on Susan Sontag and Fabio Cleto, camp serves as an analytic lens to show how exaggerated seriousness, aff

Behavioral and Neurophysiological Implications of Pathological Human Tau Expression in Serotonin Neurons.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive degenerative disorder that results in a severe loss of brain cells and irreversible cognitive decline. Memory problems are the most recognized symptoms of AD. However, approximately 90% of patients diagnosed with AD suffer from behavioral symptoms, including mood changes and social impairment years before cognitive dysfunction. Recent evidence indicates that the dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN) is among the initial regions that show tau pathology, which is a hallmark feature of AD. The DRN harbors serotonin (5-HT) neurons, which are critically involved in mo

Automated system for training and assessing string-pulling behaviors in rodents.

String-pulling tasks have been used for centuries to study coordinated bimanual motor behavior and problem solving. String pulling is rapidly learned, ethologically grounded, and has been applied to many species and disease conditions. Typically, training of string-pulling behaviors is achieved through manual shaping and baiting. Furthermore, behavioral assessment of reaching, grasping, and pulling is often performed through labor intensive manual video scoring. No system, to our knowledge, currently exists for the automated shaping and assessment of string-pulling behaviors. Here we describe

Transposons in the Williams-Beuren Syndrome Critical Region are Associated with Social Behavior in Assistance Dogs.

A strong signature of selection in the domestic dog genome is found in a five-megabase region of chromosome six in which four structural variants derived from transposons have previously been associated with human-oriented social behavior, such as attentional bias to social stimuli and social interest in strangers. To explore these genetic associations in more phenotypic detail-as well as their role in training success in a specialized assistance dog program-we genotyped 1001 assistance dogs from Canine Companions for Independence®, including both successful graduates and dogs released from th

The effects of exercise training on heart, brain and behavior, in the isoproterenol-induced cardiac infarct model in middle-aged female rats.

Women with cardiovascular disease may be more susceptible to concomitant mental health problems, such as depression and cognitive decline. Exercise training has beneficial effects on the cardiovascular system as well as on mental functions. Aim of the present study was to study the effects of exercise training on heart, brain and behavior in the isoproterenol (ISO) model in middle-aged female rats. Twelve months old female Wistar rats were submitted to ISO injections (70 mg/kg s.c., on two consecutive days) or received saline. One week later, rats were assigned to either exercise training (tre

Systematic review of risk and protective factors for suicidal and self-harm behaviors among children and adolescents involved with cyberbullying.

Cyberbullying is associated with increased risk of suicidal and self-harm behaviors in children and adolescents. However, no review to date has explored factors that exacerbate and mitigate this relationship. This systematic review concerns research on factors that influence the impact of cyberbullying on suicidal and self-harm behaviors. Four bibliographic databases were explored and references in included articles were searched. We identified 727 articles and retained 66 that met inclusion criteria. Research has identified multiple risk factors which have been associated with increased suici

Exploring the Preference for Fatigue-avoidance Goals as a Mediator Between Pain Catastrophizing, Functional Impairment, and Walking Behavior in Women With Fibromyalgia.

OBJECTIVES: Along with the symptoms of pain and fatigue, pain catastrophizing and avoidance behaviors are highly prevalent and associated with functional impairment in fibromyalgia (FM) patients. Although pain and fatigue affect patients' quality of life, research has been exclusively focused on how pain affects physical activity and exercise. The aim of this study was to analyze the role of pain catastrophizing and preference for fatigue-avoidance goals in walking behavior and functional impairment in women with FM. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional study the sample was composed

Obesity, eating behavior and physical activity during COVID-19 lockdown: A study of UK adults.

Eating, physical activity and other weight-related lifestyle behaviors may have been impacted by the COVID-19 crisis and people with obesity may be disproportionately affected. We examined weight-related behaviors and weight management barriers among UK adults during the COVID-19 social lockdown. During April-May of the 2020 COVID-19 social lockdown, UK adults (N = 2002) completed an online survey including measures relating to physical activity, diet quality, overeating and how mental/physical health had been affected by lockdown. Participants also reported on perceived changes in weight-rela

A Systematic Review of Public Housing, Poverty (De)Concentration, and Risk Behaviors: What About Youth?

Mobility housing programs aim to deconcentrate poverty in public housing areas. Previous synthesis research results describe the potential negative impact of mobility programs on the physical and mental health of youth. The current systematic review aims to expand our knowledge of the effects of living in a public housing development and leaving public housing and moving to a new neighborhood on youth risk behaviors, including both general crime/delinquency and substance use, sexual risk behavior, behavioral problems, and binge drinking. The systematic review process produced 7 primary researc

Patterns of Maltreatment Co-Occurrence in Incarcerated Youth in Australia.

Child maltreatment research is increasingly recognizing the need to capture patterns of co-occurrence between different types of abuse/neglect and to consider their associations with psychosocial functioning. Few studies have examined these issues in justice-involved youth despite the fact that rates of maltreatment and trauma-related psychopathology are disproportionately high among this population. This study examined profiles of self-reported child physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, and neglect among incarcerated juveniles in Victoria, Australia, using latent class analysis. We
