What sixty years of research says about the effectiveness of patient education on health: a second order meta-analysis.

Although meta-analyses have examined the association between patient education and health, the validity and quality of this evidence have not been comprehensively assessed. This second order meta-analysis combined previous meta-analyses that examined the effectiveness of patient education on health outcomes as an overall weighted grand mean d¯¯. Further, measures of methodological quality, meaningful variability across first order meta-analyses, and evidence for publication bias were examined. Forty meta-analyses were identified, investigating 156 associations between patient education and hea

"I'll look after the kids while you go and have a shower": an evaluation of a service to address mild to moderate maternal perinatal mental health problems.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal mental health (PMH) problems are a major public health concern because they may impair parenting ability which potentially has an immediate and long-term impact on the physical, cognitive and emotional health of the child. AIMS: We evaluated a Perinatal Support Service (PSS) which supports positive attachment between mothers with PMH problems and their child, to evidence its impact on maternal mental health and maternal-infant interaction. METHOD: Using a mixed-methods approach, anonymised pre- and post-service outcomes data from 123 clients, 14 interviews and a focus g

Position of the American Dietetic Association: promoting and supporting breastfeeding.

It is the position of the American Dietetic Association that exclusive breastfeeding provides optimal nutrition and health protection for the first 6 months of life and breastfeeding with complementary foods from 6 months until at least 12 months of age is the ideal feeding pattern for infants. Breastfeeding is an important public health strategy for improving infant and child morbidity and mortality, improving maternal morbidity, and helping to control health care costs. Breastfeeding is associated with a reduced risk of otitis media, gastroenteritis, respiratory illness, sudden infant death s

Research trends and emerging topics in antifungal therapeutic drug monitoring: a bibliometric analysis with implications for clinical pharmacy practice.

INTRODUCTION: Therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) plays an important role in optimizing antifungal pharmacotherapy because of the substantial pharmacokinetic variability and narrow therapeutic window of many antifungal agents. However, the global research landscape and emerging trends in antifungal TDM have not been systematically evaluated. AIM: This study aimed to analyze global research trends, collaboration networks, and emerging research hotspots in antifungal TDM using bibliometric analyses. METHOD: Relevant publications published between January 2014 and November 14, 2024, were retrieve

Prescription of Psychotropic Drugs for Chronic Insomnia in Primary Care.

Insomnia is the most prevalent sleep disorder in adults, representing a major public health problem. Healthcare management in a specific area first requires analysing its current practices and issues. We conducted a retrospective observational study of over 100,000 patients from two large primary care databases in the public healthcare Department of Sagunto (Valencia, Spain), from 2009 to 2017. Cases of insomnia were defined by ICD-10 codes, and prescriptions of hypnotics were collected. The data analysis was performed on epidemiological aspects, comorbidity, diagnosis and treatment of insomni

The illness of empress Maria Theresa as a trigger for the adoption of variolation in Austria (1768).

In 1767, Austrian Empress Maria Theresa contracted smallpox and survived, but the disease had already claimed the lives of several members of her family. These personal losses renewed her interest in preventive measures against smallpox. Although initially skeptical, she authorized her physician, Gerard van Swieten, to explore the emerging practice of variolation. In 1768, Habsburg children were variolated by Jan Ingen-Housz-a landmark event in Austrian public health. To commemorate these events, the empire issued medals that not only celebrate scientific progress but also promote the state's

Vitamin D and Sun Exposure: A Community Survey in Australia.

Sun exposure carries both harms and benefits. Exposing the skin to the sun is the main modifiable cause of skin cancers, which exert a considerable health and economic burden in Australia. The most well-established benefit of exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation is vitamin D production. Australia has the highest incidence of skin cancer in the world but, despite the high ambient UV radiation, approximately one quarter of the population is estimated to be vitamin D deficient. Balancing the risks and benefits is challenging and requires effective communication. We sought to provide a snapshot

Impact of diabetes on COVID-19 and other infection: Report from the 22nd Hong Kong Diabetes and Cardiovascular Risk Factors-East Meets West Symposium.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has posed enormous challenges to healthcare systems worldwide. The negative impact of COVID-19 is widespread and includes not only people who contracted the disease but also those with chronic morbidities such as diabetes whose care is compromised due to diversion of medical resources. People with diabetes are generally more susceptible to infection as a result of altered immunity. People with diabetes have a worse prognosis from COVID-19 and there is evidence to suggest that severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 may directly affect pa

Utility of Theory to Explain Village Doctors' Willingness to Treat People Living with HIV in Rural China.

Stigma against people living with HIV in China is common, not only among the general public but also among Chinese health-care providers, impacting their ability to provide quality HIV treatment and care. HIV stigma may be particularly common in rural areas of China, where village doctors (i.e., "barefoot doctors") have limited medical training yet are charged with providing frontline care for much of China's rural population. Therefore, the present study aims to use communication and behavioral theory to better understand Chinese village doctors' beliefs about HIV, including their willingness

Assessing the Importance of Domestic Vaccine Manufacturing Centers: An Overview of Immunization Programs, Vaccine Manufacture, and Distribution.

Vaccines have significantly reduced the detrimental effects of numerous human infectious diseases worldwide, helped to reduce drastically child mortality rates and even achieved eradication of major pathogens, such as smallpox. These achievements have been possible due to a dedicated effort for vaccine research and development, as well as an effective transfer of these vaccines to public health care systems globally. Either public or private institutions have committed to developing and manufacturing vaccines for local or international population supply. However, current vaccine manufacturers

A taxonomy of medical uncertainties in clinical genome sequencing.

PURPOSE: Clinical next-generation sequencing (CNGS) is introducing new opportunities and challenges into the practice of medicine. Simultaneously, these technologies are generating uncertainties of an unprecedented scale that laboratories, clinicians, and patients are required to address and manage. We describe in this report the conceptual design of a new taxonomy of uncertainties around the use of CNGS in health care. METHODS: Interviews to delineate the dimensions of uncertainty in CNGS were conducted with genomics experts and themes were extracted in order to expand on a previously publis

Lost in Translation: No Effect of a High-Profile Publication on the Concomitant Use of Interacting Drugs.

We sought to assess whether a high-profile publication that demonstrated serious clinical consequences of specific drug-drug interactions (DDIs) reduced the concomitant use of those drugs. We conducted a quasi-experimental study using 2000-2008 prescription claims from a commercial health insurer to examine trends in the dispensing of the interacting drug pairs (angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors[ACEI] + potassium-sparing diuretic, digoxin + clarithromycin, and glyburide + cotrimoxazole) and control drug pairs previously reported in a top-tier general medicine journal. We examined prepub

Assessment of Out-of-Pocket Expenditure of HER2-Positive Breast Cancer Patients in a Tertiary Cancer Center and Private Clinics in the Philippines.

BACKGROUND: The survival advantage of HER2-positive breast cancer from targeted treatment is commonly undermined by catastrophic health expenditure (CHE), particularly in resource-limited areas. Recognizing that financial catastrophe leads to non-adherence to treatment and dissaving practices, we examined the out-of-pocket (OOP) expenses of patients with HER2-positive breast cancer. OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to estimate the median total per-cycle out-of-pocket expenditure of HER2-positive breast cancer treatment from the patient perspective, in public and private clinics, evaluate the associ
