The influence of parathyroid hormone (PTH) on the process of fracture healing was examined using the fractured rats which were parathyroidectomized or given synthetic PTH. The biochemical and histological changes were studied. A C-terminal fragment of rat pancreastatin, 26-residue peptide amide was synthesized by the Fmoc-based solid phase method and its biological activity was evaluated for the first time in the conscious rat. Rat pancreastatin inhibited glucose-stimulated insulin secretion and elevated blood glucose levels in a concentration of 10 nmol/kg/h. The relative molar potency of that of porcine is equivalent. This study suggests that the synthetic rat pancreastatin has a biological activity, and may play a physiological role in the endocrine pancreas.

A single systemic injection of acromelic acid, a potent kainate analogue, caused behavioral and pathological effects distinct from those seen after systemic kainate. There was an initial marked tonic extension of the rat hindlimb, followed often by convulsions and, in surviving rats, by a transient flaccid paralysis and, ultimately, a persistent spastic paraplegia. Pathological examination suggested specific lesions of interneurons in the lower spinal cord with little or no damage to the hippocampal neurons preferentially affected by systemic kainate.

In the present study the literature on the round window membrane (RWM) structure was reviewed and the rat used as an animal model to elucidate structural alterations of the RWM occurring during serous (SOM) and purulent (POM) otitis media.
