White-centered, flame-shaped retinal hemorrhages, also known as Roth spots, occur in several diseases, most often in subacute bacterial endocarditis. Other conditions such as leukemia, hypertensive retinopathy, and pre-eclampsia are other causes. Here, we present the case of a 32-year-old female with sickle cell anemia (HbSS) who was treated at the hospital after experiencing a sickle cell crisis. Fundus examination was performed to rule out sickle cell retinopathies, suggesting the presence of Roth spots in the retina which are rarely seen in sickle cell disease.

Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) is used in the treatment of rheumatologic diseases including systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis and other conditions. Besides reducing joint and skin inflammation, growing evidence shows other beneficial effects of HCQ, e.g. a positive effect on cardiovascular risk, pregnancy outcome, and flare reduction. In this review, we wish to emphasise "best practice" in the use of HCQ based on the present literature, to show the typical eye damage, which may occur, and to highlight which precautions should be made, so that retinal injury does not occur.

We report a case of mucormycosis in a 48 year-old diabetic woman. She presented with nasosinusal ulcer accompanied by panophthalmitis in the left eye and central retinal artery occlusion in the right eye. Left eye enucleation was performed and the diagnosis of mucormycosis was made on histopathologic examination displaying fungal micro-organisms in the optic nerve and in the retina.
