Glucosuria in captive okapi (Okapia johnstoni).

Eighteen of 38 captive okapi housed in the United States were found glucosuric by dipstick analysis. To confirm these findings, urine glucos … = 6) with and without glucosuria with the use of results considered within normal limits for other ruminants. We conclude that glucosuria is a true finding in many apparently healthy captive okapi in the United States.

[Zoonotic diseases caused by bacteria of the genus Bartonella genus: new reservoirs ? New vectors?].

Domestic animals and wildlife represent a large reservoir for bartonellae, at least eight species or subspecies of which have been reported to cause zoonotic infections. In addition, numerous orphan clinical syndromes are now being attributed to Bartonella henselae infection. Many mammalian species, including cats, dogs, rodents and ruminants are the main bartonellae reservoirs. Cats are the main reservoir for B. henselae. It appears that domestic dogs, at least in non tropical regions, are more likely to be accidental hosts than reservoirs, and constitute excellent sentinels for human infecti…

Effect of diet on Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) growth and survival in rumen and abomasum fluids.

The gastrointestinal tract of ruminants is the main reservoir for Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) strains, potentially pathogenic for humans. We used for the first timerumen fluid in which no exogenous carbon source or other supplement was added to compare acid resistance and growth of STEC in physiological physico-chemical conditions. We showed that acidic conditions resulting from the combination of high volatile fatty acid concentration and moderately acidic pH did not alter the survival of STEC, and that human non-O157:H7 STEC isolates were able to persist in the rumen conten…

Corticosteroid-responsive thrombocytopenia was identified in 2 beef cows. Clinical findings in 1 cow included hematoma formation, petechiati … ly normal for at least 1 year after treatment was completed. Reported causes of thrombocytopenia in ruminants were ruled out or seemed unlikely; a definitive cause for thrombocytopenia in the 2 cows could not be established.

The molecular biology of the morbillivirus (measles) group.

The morbilliviruses are a closely related group of important human and animal pathogens. The best known members of the group are measles virus in man and canine distemper virus in dogs. The group also includes two other serious animal diseases, rinderpest or cattle plague and peste des petits ruminants in sheep and goats. The latter viruses are of great economic importance in Africa, Asia and the Middle East. Persistence of these viruses in some form is a possible mechanism whereby life-long immunity is conferred on an infected individual. In addition to the severe, often fatal, acute disease …

Self-Esteem and Repetitive Negative Thinking as Mediators of the Association Between Bullying and Disordered Eating.

OBJECTIVE: Eating disorders are associated with marked distress and impairment, including elevated risk for anxiety, depression, and suicidality. Bullying victimization is associated with eating disorder symptoms in late adolescence and young adulthood, when peer relationships and social evaluation are developmentally salient. Cognitive-affective processes, including self-esteem and repetitive negative thinking, may help explain this association; however, less is known about whether these constructs show unique indirect associations when examined simultaneously. METHODS: Self-esteem and repet

Negative interpretation bias and repetitive negative thinking as mechanisms in the association between insomnia and depression in young adults.

OBJECTIVES: Despite evidence supporting sleep's role in the development and maintenance of depression, mechanisms underlying this association in young people are less established. Negative interpretation bias (the tendency to interpret ambiguous situations negatively) and repetitive negative thinking (RNT) are important candidate mechanisms. Whilst negative interpretation bias is implicated in depression development, it is a transdiagnostic process and may result from insomnia. Yet, research relating to these constructs is lacking. RNT is another transdiagnostic process implicated in associati

Mapping Stress, Anxiety, Depression, and Repetitive Negative Thinking Among Non-Western Undergraduate Students: A Network Analysis.

Most studies on stress have primarily focused on Western, educated, industrialized, rich, and democratic samples, which may differ from populations in non-Western countries in terms of how they think and respond to stress. This study investigated the interplay of stress-related variables, including repetitive negative thinking (RNT), neuroticism, mindful awareness, cognitive control, academic or general stress, anxiety, and depression among Indonesian university undergraduates. Network analyses (association, graphical least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (gLASSO), and relative impor

Schmallenberg virus epidemiology and regional control strategies: diagnostics, vaccines, and vector management.

Schmallenberg virus (SBV) is an emerging orthobunyavirus transmitted by Culicoides midges. It poses a serious global health threat to ruminants, especially during pregnancy, causing abortion, stillbirths, and congenital malformations. Since its first outbreak in 2011, SBV has spread across Europe and other regions. Its transmission has expanded due to global climate change and increased animal trade, resulting in recurrent outbreaks in endemic regions and a growing risk of introduction into non-endemic areas. This situation highlights the urgent need for improved control strategies. This revie…

Can an intervention designed to reduce repetitive negative thinking alter the response to a psychosocial stressor? A randomized controlled study.

Prior research suggests that repetitive negative thinking (RNT) negatively impacts mental health by intensifying and prolonging emotional reactivity to stress. This study investigated whether an intervention designed to reduce RNT alters emotional reactivity. Young adults with high trait RNT (N = 79) were randomly allocated to an RNT-focused intervention (smartphone app-based, 10 days) or a waiting list before exposure to a standardized stressor. The pre-registered analysis did not reveal a significant condition * time interaction for negative affect. However, exploratory analyses showed that

Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum in family farming goats from the Luracatao Valley, Salta, Argentina.

Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum infections are important causes of abortion in ruminants. The objective of this study was to determine the seroprevalence and frequency of T. gondii and N. caninum titers in goats raised by family farmers in the Luracatao Valley of Salta province, Argentina. A total of 259 serum samples were collected from adult goats in 42 family farms in nine communities and tested for indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT, cut-off 1:100). Seroprevalences were 34.36% (89/259) for T. gondii and 64.09% (166/259) for N. caninum. Co-infection was found in 25.86% (67/259)…

Specific T-cell subsets have a role in anti-viral immunity and pathogenesis but not viral dynamics or onwards vector transmission of an important livestock arbovirus.

INTRODUCTION: Bluetongue virus (BTV) is an arthropod-borne Orbivirus that is almost solely transmitted by Culicoides biting midges and causes a globally important haemorrhagic disease, bluetongue (BT), in susceptible ruminants. Infection with BTV is characterised by immunosuppression and substantial lymphopenia at peak viraemia in the host. METHODS: In this study, the role of cell-mediated immunity and specific T-cell subsets in BTV pathogenesis, clinical outcome, viral dynamics, immune protection, and onwards transmission to a susceptible Culicoides vector is defined in unprecedented detail …

Wild micromammal host spectrum of zoonotic eukaryotic parasites in Spain. Occurrence and genetic characterisation.

Micromammals have historically been recognized as highly contentious species in terms of the maintenance and transmission of zoonotic pathogens to humans. Limited information is currently available on the epidemiology and potential public health significance of intestinal eukaryotes in wild micromammals. We examined 490 faecal samples, grouped into 155 pools, obtained from 11 micromammal species captured in 11 Spanish provinces for the presence of DNA from Cryptosporidium spp., Giardia duodenalis, Enterocytozoon bieneusi and Blastocystis sp. The presence of Leishmania spp. was investigated in

Relationship between resilience and insomnia among the middle-aged and elderly: mediating role of maladaptive emotion regulation strategies.

This study aimed to investigate the relationships between cognitive emotion regulation (CER) strategies, resilience, and insomnia and the underlying mechanism that explains the relationships. Six hundred and fifty-three middle-aged and old people recruited from community service centers in Henan province completed questionnaires related to CER strategies, resilience, and insomnia. Results showed refocus on planning and positive reappraisal negatively predicted insomnia, and catastrophising, rumination and self-blame positively predicted insomnia. Moreover, maladaptive emotion regulation strate

The Role of Attachment and Maladaptive Emotion Regulation Strategies in the Development of Bulimic Symptoms in Adolescents.

Following the theoretical propositions of the Emotion Regulation model of attachment, the current study investigated whether attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance might play a differential contributing role in the development of bulimic symptoms, through assumed differences in adopting specific maladaptive emotion regulation strategies in a sample of adolescents. Developmentally appropriate self-report questionnaires were administered to a community sample of 397 adolescents (Mean age: 14.02; 62.7% female) and this at 2 time points with a 1-year time lag. Results provided longitudinal ev

Dream content and intrusive thoughts in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Although central to any exhaustive theory of human subjectivity, the relationship between dream and waking consciousness remains uncertain. Some findings suggest that dream consciousness can be influenced by severe disorders of thought content. The suppression of unwanted thoughts has been shown to influence dream content in healthy individuals. In order to better define this phenomenon, we evaluated the persistence of obsessive/compulsive themes across the dream and waking cognition of OCD patients and in a control group of healthy subjects. Participants were administered a shortened version

Basic and clinical pharmacology contribution to extend anthelmintic molecules lifespan.

The correct use of pharmacology-based information is critical to design successful strategies for the future of parasite control in livestock animals. Integrated pharmaco-parasitological research approaches have greatly contributed to optimize drug activity. In an attempt to manage drug resistance in helminths of ruminants, combinations of two or more anthelmintics are being used or promoted, based on the fact that individual worms may have a lower degree of resistance to a multiple component formulation, when each chemical has a different mode of action compared to that observed when a single…
