Greater sleep variability is associated with higher systemic inflammation in type 2 diabetes.

Sleep irregularity and variability have been shown to be detrimental to cardiometabolic health. The present pilot study explored if higher day-to-day sleep irregularity and variability were associated with systemic inflammation, as assessed by high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, in type 2 diabetes. Thirty-five patients with type 2 diabetes (mean age 54.3 years, 54.3% female) who were not shift-workers participated. The presence of diabetic retinopathy was determined. The standard deviation of sleep duration and sleep midpoint across all recorded nights were used to quantify sleep variability

Mean Oxygen Saturation during Sleep Is Related to Specific Brain Atrophy Pattern.

OBJECTIVE: There is much controversy about the neurobiological mechanisms underlying the effects of sleep-disordered breathing on the brain. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between markers of sleep-related hypoxemia and brain anatomy. METHODS: We used data from a large-scale cohort from the general population (n = 775, 50.6% males, age range = 45-86 years, mean age = 60.3 ± 9.9) that underwent full polysomnography and brain magnetic resonance imaging to correlate respiratory variables with regional brain volume estimates. RESULTS: After adjusting for age, gender, and

Psychosocial-Behavioural Phenotypes and Temporomandibular Disorder Risk: Insights From a Latent Class Analysis in Southeast Asian Young Adults.

BACKGROUND: Psychosocial and behavioural factors shape temporomandibular disorders (TMDs), yet integrated phenotyping in Southeast Asian young adults remains limited. University students, a vulnerable subgroup of young adults, face heightened risk. OBJECTIVES: To identify latent psychosocial-behavioural classes in this cohort and assess associations with sociodemographic factors and TMD severity. METHODS: A cross-sectional study of participants aged 18-30 years used validated instruments to assess distress (Patient Health Questionnaire-4; PHQ-4), somatic symptoms (PHQ-15), oral behaviours (O

Reduction in excess daytime sleepiness by modafinil in patients with myotonic dystrophy.

Patients with myotonic dystrophy frequently suffer from excess daytime sleepiness, which can be a significant cause of disability. Previous studies have indicated that this excess daytime sleepiness is only occasionally due to obstructive sleep apnoea and may be principally of central nervous system origin. Modafinil has been successfully used to treat narcolepsy, a central disorder causing excess daytime sleepiness. We have investigated the use of this drug in myotonic dystrophy patients with excess daytime sleepiness. Patients were recruited from a clinic population on the basis of screening

Psychological Distress and Sleep Disturbance as Mediators in the Association Between Bodily Pain and Painful Temporomandibular Disorders.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate the associations between bodily pain (BP) and painful temporomandibular disorders (PT) in the general population in China. It also focused on evaluating how psychological distress and sleep disturbance mediated the association. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data were derived from a community survey conducted in mainland China in 2024 (N = 1920). Participants were categorised by BP sites: none (PF group), single site (SP group), and multiple sites (MP group). Psychological distress was measured using the Patient Health Questionnaire-4 (PHQ-4), and

Association of substance use with stress-related sleep disturbance among adolescents in 76 countries: a global population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Stress-related sleep disturbance has emerged as a significant public health concern among adolescents worldwide. The independent and combined effects of substance use on stress-related sleep disturbance remain inconclusive. We aimed to explore the association of the use of substances such as tobacco and alcohol with stress-related sleep disturbance among adolescents in 76 countries. METHODS: We collected data from the global school-based student health survey, which comprised 302 181 adolescents aged 12-17 years from 76 countries. The frequency of tobacco and alcohol use in the pa

Treatment effects in pharmacological clinical randomized controlled trials are mainly due to placebo.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

OBJECTIVES: The placebo response in clinical trials has four components: regression to the mean (RTM), measurement artifacts, natural tendency (NT) of the disease, and the genuine placebo effect. Our objective is to determine what contributes to the size of the placebo-effect in clinical trials by meta-regressions of randomized placebo-controlled clinical trials. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: We identified five diseases where data on the rates of NT were available to search for a sample of n = 150 (5x30) randomized controlled trials. We extracted various study descriptors and performed meta-regre

Construction and Initial Examination of Inter-Rater Reliability of a Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-5-TR Sleep Disorders (SCISD) - Kid.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: To construct and evaluate the inter-rater reliability of the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-5-TR Sleep Disorders - Kid (SCISD-Kid). METHOD: The SCISD-Kid was modeled on the adult SCISD-R and accounted for pediatric developmental and sociocultural factors. Fifty sleep-disturbed children (Mage = 11.9, SD = 2.9) and 50 caregivers responded to the final SCISD-Kid. Video recordings were double-scored to evaluate inter-rater reliability. RESULTS: The final SCISD-Kid contained approximately 90 questions. Eight of the nine covered disorders had prevalence rates sufficient fo

Associations of war-related PTSD symptoms with sleep disturbance: The explanatory roles of emotion regulation difficulties and intolerance of uncertainty.

OBJECTIVE: Although associations between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and sleep disturbance are well-established, relatively little work has examined mechanisms that may underlie this association. This study aimed to examine the explanatory role of emotion regulation difficulties and intolerance of uncertainty (IU) in associations between PTSD symptoms and sleep disturbance among a sample of war-exposed Iraqi individuals. METHOD: We used structural equation modeling in a war-exposed nonclinical sample (N = 617; Mage = 27.63; SD = 4.81; 46.03% females) to model indirect effects from PT

Neurocognitive Profiles of Pediatric Patients with ESES, Generalized Epilepsy, or Focal Epilepsy.

To date, the neurocognitive profile and comorbid psychiatric risks associated with ESES, a syndrome that commonly coincides with a seizure disorder, in contrast to generalized or partial/focal epilepsy without ESES remains unclear. Accordingly, this preliminary study aimed to characterize the neurocognitive differences across pediatric patients with ESES, generalized or focal epilepsy, and risk for comorbid diagnoses (mood disorder, autism, intellectual disability, learning disability, ADHD). We included data from a total of 79 pediatric patients, including those with recently diagnosed ESES (

Degeneration of human photosensitive retinal ganglion cells may explain sleep and circadian rhythms disorders in Parkinson's disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD) patients often suffer from non-motor symptoms like sleep dysregulation, mood disturbances or circadian rhythms dysfunction. The melanopsin-containing retinal ganglion cells are involved in the control and regulation of these processes and may be affected in PD, as other retinal and visual implications have been described in the disease. Number and morphology of human melanopsin-containing retinal ganglion cells were evaluated by immunohistochemistry in eyes from donors with PD or control. The Sholl number of intersections, the number of branches, and the number of term

Targeting the Noradrenergic System in Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Prazosin Trials.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a chronic psychiatric disorder that may develop after exposure to a life-threatening trauma. As veterans and armed forces may deal with diverse health problems compared with civilians, they have a greater risk for psychiatric disorders, including PTSD, than civilians, even if the disorder may be also frequent in the general population. PTSD is associated with significant comorbidity, especially with mood disorders and substance abuse. Moreover, the suicide risk is higher in PTSD patients than in the general population.
