Motivations and Barriers to Sustained PrEP Use Among Men in Buffalo City Metro, South Africa: A Qualitative Study.

Men in sub-Saharan Africa experience disproportionately poor HIV outcomes, yet their engagement with HIV prevention services remains limited. Although oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is an effective HIV prevention strategy, relatively little research has examined the factors that support men's sustained use of PrEP after initiation. We conducted a qualitative sub-study among men who initiated PrEP through a community-based HIV prevention program in Buffalo City Metro, South Africa. Men who returned for their three-month PrEP refill were invited to complete an in-depth interview. Thematic

Melatonin ameliorates autistic-like behaviors by restoring gut microbiota-derived tryptophan metabolites.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by social deficits and repetitive stereotyped behavior. Disrupted microbiota‒gut‒brain axis (MGBA) signaling contributes to the pathology of ASD and cognitive disability. Melatonin (MT), a naturally occurring compound, has shown potential in ameliorating core symptoms of ASD and mitigating gut microbiota dysbiosis, yet the underlying mechanism is poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate whether exogenous melatonin improves behavioral deficits in valproic acid (VPA)-exposed male offspring rats, and the modul

A theory-driven candidate annotation architecture for collective regulation under stress in human-centered computational psychiatry: early modern Iberia as a worked coding demonstration.

Computational psychiatry has advanced formal accounts of individual prediction, affect regulation, and maladaptive rigidity, but it still has fewer clinically interpretable tools for representing social and institutional processes under collective stress. This Hypothesis and Theory article proposes a theory-driven candidate annotation architecture for this purpose. It defines five collective-process variables-defensive closure (DEF-C), collective anxiety load (ANX-C), integrative progression (PRO-C), punitive superegoic regulation (SUP-C), and moral frame rigidity (FRAME-C)-as theory-guided in

Navigating autism and mental health: A qualitative study of therapists' experiences of psychotherapy for comorbidities in autistic adults.

In this study, we explored the psychotherapeutic process for autistic adult clients without intellectual impairment with comorbid psychological disorders, drawing on the perspectives of highly specialized psychotherapists with extensive clinical experience in autism-focused practice. Within the context of the ongoing shift from deficit-based interventions toward neurodiversity-affirming approaches, we investigated how therapists conceptualize comorbidities in autism and how this conceptualization informs their therapeutic work. We employed a qualitative research design and collected data throu

The Game of Self: Identity and Experience as Active Inference.

Academic AbstractActive inference is an integrative theoretical framework that models the nervous system as a statistical engine for predicting and regulating sensory input. Within this framework, perception and behavior work toward the same imperative: minimizing uncertainty. The current article extends this approach to the inferences social agents make about themselves as both subjects and objects of experience. The resulting model conceptualizes "The Game of Self" as a continuous Bayesian updating of episodic and semantic self-representations in order to reduce self-related uncertainty. The

Aging alone: lifestyle and unmet needs among unpartnered middle-aged adults preparing for later life in urban Taiwan.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Population aging, delayed marriage, one-person households, and weakening assumptions of spouse-based care make unpartnered aging an emerging concern in Taiwan. This study examined how unpartnered middle-aged adults in urban Taiwan prepare for later life and developed two grounded models of solitary aging. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: A convergent, qualitatively weighted mixed-methods design was used. 11 unpartnered adults aged 43-56 completed interviews and questionnaires assessing demographics, subjective aging, personality traits, social connectedness, isolation,

Pirimicarb exposure disrupts gut microbiome composition in honey bees (Apis mellifera L.): Seasonal differences and impaired colony recovery.

Pesticide exposure poses a significant threat to the honey bee's health, yet the effects of chemicals like pirimicarb on honey bee gut microbiomes remain poorly understood. This study investigates the impact of pirimicarb on honey bee microbiota, with a particular focus on how host physiology (spring vs. winter bees) modulates microbial responses to pesticide exposure. Through a series of controlled experiments, we demonstrate that pirimicarb is associated with selective dysbiosis resulting in taxon-specific microbial shifts without altering total bacterial load. Key bacterial taxa such as Sno

Mirtazapine alleviates depressive-like behaviors through the paraventricular SIK1-CRTC1 signaling pathway.

BACKGROUND: The paraventricular nucleus (PVN) plays a pivotal role in integrating neuroendocrine responses to stress, with the salt-inducible kinase 1 (SIK1)-CREB-regulated transcription co-activator 1 (CRTC1) pathway critically regulating corticotropin-releasing hormone expression and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activity. Mirtazapine is a clinically effective antidepressant with a unique noradrenergic and specific serotonergic mechanism, yet whether its therapeutic actions involve modulation of this PVN pathway remains unexplored. METHODS: Adult male C57BL/6J mice were subjecte

Not more harm, but less help: Dynamic associations among childhood emotional maltreatment, prosocial behavior, and bullying involvement in Chinese adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Although studies have revealed the association between childhood emotional maltreatment and adolescents' social behavior, there remains a lack of integrative examination of both relationship-enhancing and relationship-damaging behavioral orientations, namely prosocial behavior and bullying involvement, particularly within the Chinese context. The potential dynamic relationships among them remain insufficiently understood. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to examine dynamic associations among childhood emotional maltreatment, prosocial behavior, and bullying involvement, and to explore t

Liver-derived complement component 3 promotes the susceptibility to stress-induced depression by impairing blood-brain barrier integrity.

Chronic stress can trigger major depressive disorder through peripheral immune factors. Enhanced circulating levels of complement component 3 (C3), a key innate immunity molecule that is predominantly produced by the liver, have been observed in depressed patients. However, the role of liver-derived C3 in the regulation of behavior under chronic stress remains ambiguous. Here, we found that liver-derived C3 critically contributes to stress susceptibility and blood-brain barrier (BBB) impairment in the nucleus accumbens (NAc) by inhibiting endothelial cell claudin-5, a pivotal tight junction pr

The role of housing instability in the association between ambient temperature and preterm birth.

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth is a leading cause of neonatal death and long-term health issues. Both environmental and social stressors, such as heat exposure and housing stability, may contribute to adverse birth outcomes, yet their joint effects are not well studied, especially in the Korean context. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the independent and joint associations of ambient temperature and housing instability with preterm birth. METHODS: This study analyzed eight years (2015–2022) of birth outcomes among women, derived from nationwide, register-based census data covering 100% of the po

From Preservation to Creation: The Expanding Frontier of Fertility Preservation - Proceedings of the 2nd Montreux Reproductive Summit, 29-30 August 2025.

Fertility preservation (FP) has become an essential dimension of modern medicine, reflecting the paradigm shift from survival alone to survivorship. Once confined to oncology, FP now spans a broad spectrum of medical, social, and technological contexts. Surgical innovations, including fertility-sparing surgery and ovarian transposition, allow reproductive potential to be safeguarded without compromising oncological safety. Cryobiology has been transformed by the transition from slow-freezing to vitrification, establishing oocyte and embryo cryopreservation as gold-standard approaches with outc

CIRBP mediates hypoxia-induced mitochondrial metabolic reprogramming in microglia to regulate polarization and anxiety-like behavior.

Exposure to high-altitude hypoxia can lead to anxiety-like behaviors, social issues, and other dysfunctions of the central nervous system (CNS), but the molecular mechanisms behind these effects are not fully understood. Microglial M1 polarization and changes in mitochondrial metabolism are crucial in hypoxic brain injury. The cold-inducible RNA-binding protein (CIRBP) is known to regulate mitochondrial balance and inflammatory responses. However, its role in hypoxia-induced microglial metabolic changes, polarization issues, and anxiety-like behaviors is still unclear. This study established a
