Resilience and psychosocial factors in adult with epilepsy: A longitudinal study.

PURPOSE: Resilience is conceptually characterized as a dynamic process encompassing positive adaptation in the context of significant adversity. Our goal was to assess the resilience in people with epilepsy (PWE) and how it impacts longitudinally on psychosocial factors, with a particular focus on the manifestation of stigmatization-related feelings. METHODS: We consecutively enrolled 78 adults PWE (42.5 ± 16.2 years old); among them 36 (46.1 %) were seizure-free. All subjects completed at baseline (T0) the Resilience Scale (RS-14) and questionnaires for the assessment of depressive symptoms,

Minimizing patient burden in outcome monitoring: The case for abbreviated versions of PHQ-9, GAD-7 and WSAS.

BACKGROUND: The Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) program uses the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7), and the Work and Social Adjustment Scale (WSAS) as part of their unique outcome monitoring system. To reduce patient burden, this study explored whether abbreviated versions of these questionnaires can be used to derive relevant outcome statistics with minimal loss of information. METHODS: Using two samples (training; n = 1530, validation; n = 766), we examined whether existing short-forms, PHQ-4 and GAD-R3, would provide eno

Development and validation of the positive evaluation core beliefs scale for social anxiety.

Fear of positive evaluation (FPE) is becoming recognised as an important component of social anxiety that is distinct from fear of negative evaluation (FNE). While core belief scales exist for fear of negative evaluation (FNE), none has been developed for FPE. Therefore, this paper describes the development and validation of a measure of core beliefs that is specific to FPE. An exploratory factor analysis was performed on 60 initial items with an Australian undergraduate sample, in which a confirmatory factor analysis was performed with an independent Australian general population sample. Stigmatization and perceived health status in patients with hidradenitis suppurativa: an observational multicenter study in Europe.

INTRODUCTION: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) can severely affect the quality of life (QoL) and is linked to psychological distress, including anxiety, depression, and reduced self-esteem. Stigmatization due to physical appearance may significantly contribute to the psychological burden and impact on QoL for HS patients. This study investigates the association between stigmatization, depression, anxiety, and health- and disease-related variables among HS patients in Europe. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This observational cross-sectional multicenter study was conducted across 22 dermatological outpatie

Socioeconomic differences in limited lung function: a cross-sectional study of middle-aged and older adults in Germany.

BACKGROUND: Limited lung function represents a serious health impairment. However, studies investigating social inequalities in limited lung function are rare. Thus, the current study investigates which socioeconomic groups are the most affected by overall limited lung function and severely limited lung function. METHODS: Data from the population-based German Aging Survey were used (N = 4472), with participants being 40 + years old. Lung function was assessed by the peak flow test. Education, income, and occupational prestige were used as socioeconomic indicators. RESULTS: We found that over

Low socioeconomic status exacerbates unmet health-related needs in patients with autoimmune hepatitis.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Diminished quality of life has been well characterized in patients with autoimmune hepatitis (AIH); however, the full spectrum of unmet needs is unclear. We hypothesized that there is a high burden of health-related unmet needs in patients with AIH, and this burden differs by socioeconomic status (SES). METHODS: Members of the Autoimmune Hepatitis Association were invited online and by email to complete a modified version of the Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Patient Needs Questionnaire. Demographic and clinical data were also captured. Low SES was defined as annual househo

Socioeconomic status, individual behaviors and risk of anxiety disorders: A Mendelian randomization study.

BACKGROUND: The association between socioeconomic status and individual behaviors (SES/IB) and anxiety disorders has garnered increasing attention, yet the impact of SES/IB on anxiety disorders remains unclear. Therefore, we employed a Mendelian randomization (MR) design to evaluate the causal relationship between SES/IB and anxiety disorders. METHODS: We conducted a two-sample MR study to assess the causal effects of SES and IB (smoking behaviors, drinking behaviors, sleeping behaviors, habitual physical activity, leisure sedentary behaviors, and reproductive behaviors) on anxiety disorders.

Socioeconomic and gender inequalities in mental disorders among adolescents and young adults.

BACKGROUND: Socioeconomic status (SES) and gender play a key role in mental health. The objective of this study was to assess socioeconomic and gender mental health inequalities in adolescents and young adults using a population-based registry. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a lifetime follow-up study of all residents in the Basque Country between 1 and 30 years old (n=609,381) as of 31 December 2018. Primary care, specialized outpatient, and hospital care records were searched for diagnoses. SES was assessed based on household income. We estimated disaggregated lifetime prevalence of su

Chronic Rhinosinusitis Disease Disparity in the South Florida Hispanic Population.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The role of social determinants of health in chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is poorly characterized. Limited research examining CRS health disparities indicates that minority status is associated with worse CRS. However, many of these studies are retrospective or performed in populations without substantial ethnic minorities. Rhinologists need to characterize existing CRS disease disparities to develop targeted strategies for improving care in these populations. This prospective study assesses preoperative CRS disease burden in South Florida (SFL) Hispanic and non-Hispanic

Is It "Aging" or Immunosenescence? The COVID-19 Biopsychosocial Risk Factors Aggravating Immunosenescence as Another Risk Factor of the Morbus. A Developmental-clinical Social Work Perspective.

COVID-19 has proliferated ageism. The impetus of this article is to show that immunosenescence is a risk factor to COVID-19 and not aging per se. Based on the idea that some older people are also healthier than younger ones, the emphasis of this article is on immunosenescence and not aging as a risk factor of COVID-19 complications. The paper utilizes a biopsychosocial approach to expound on the link between immunosenescence and COVID-19 risk factors. The article explores biological factors such as malnutrition, comorbidities, substance abuse, and sex. It also expands on psychosocial factors s

Determinants of tuberculosis treatment interruption among patients in Vihiga County, Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Despite robust Tuberculosis (TB) program with effective chemotherapy and high coverage, treatment interruption remains a serious problem. Interrupting TB treatment means that patients remain infectious for longer time and are at risk of developing drug resistance and death. This study was conducted to identify and describe predictors of TB treatment interruption. METHODS: A cohort of 291 notified TB patients from 20 selected health facilities in Vihiga County were enrolled in to the study and followed up until the end of treatment. Patient characteristics that potentially predict

Evaluation of the social phobia scale and social interaction anxiety scale as assessments of performance and interaction anxiety.

The DSM-5 classification of performance anxiety as distinct from social anxiety underlines the need for specific measurement instruments. The Social Phobia Scale (SPS) and Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS) are widely used assessments of performance and general interaction anxiety, yet few studies have examined their criterion validity using actual performance and interaction stressors. The current study is the first to assess the scales' convergent and discriminant validity using multimodal anxiety indices including psychophysiological reactivity, which is a key characterizing feature of

Understanding Innovation in Homeless Service Provision: A Study of Frontline Providers' Values-Readiness for Change.

Service innovation for adults experiencing mental illness and homelessness typically involves shifting from treatment-led, staircase models toward recovery-oriented, Housing-First models. Aligning frontline service providers' values to those embedded within newer models is an important, but under-investigated, influence on the innovation process. To assess values alignment in this context, we conducted semi-structured qualitative interviews with frontline providers in staircase services in Ireland (n = 50). Data showed that, while their values mostly aligned to the treatment-led model, there w

A case study of new approaches to address health inequalities: Due North five years on.

INTRODUCTION: When local councils took on responsibility for public health in England in 2013, leaders from across the north of England met to consider the scale of the challenge. As a result, Public Health England commissioned the Due North Report which outlined new approaches in tackling health inequalities. This second paper outlines what has been learnt in five years as a case study. This includes influencing devolution deals and new elected city mayors, planning for economic growth in deprived areas and developing community asset-based approaches. The paper outlines a new framework for pl

Social deprivation is associated with poor kidney transplantation outcome in children.

Socioeconomic status is an important determinant of health. Its impact on kidney transplantation outcome has been studied among adults but data in children are scarce, especially in Europe. Here, we investigate the association between the level of social deprivation (determined by the continuous score European Deprivation Index) and graft failure risk in pediatric kidney transplant recipients. All patients listed under 18 years of age who received a first kidney transplant between 2002 and 2014 in France were included. Of 1050 kidney transplant recipients (males 59%, median age at transplantat
