An exploration of the support person's perceptions and experiences of complex regional pain syndrome and the rehabilitation process.

We explored the perceptions and experiences of those who support a relative or friend with complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), a chronic pain condition of unknown aetiology usually affecting a single limb. Semi-structured interviews were analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis, and four superordinate themes are presented here. These themes describe the efforts of carers to make sense of CRPS and the rehabilitation process, to be sensitive to the discomfort of the person with CRPS and to respond in an attuned and helpful way. CRPS had become integrated into the carers' lives

The experience-dependent maturation of prefronto-limbic circuits and the origin of developmental psychopathology: implications for the pathogenesis and therapy of behavioural disorders.

The maturation of prefronto-limbic neuronal pathways that mediate essential affective and social regulatory functions is experience dependent. Immediately after birth the infant's affective experiences, especially those embedded in the relationship with the primary caregiver, trigger the reorganization and adaptive fine-tuning of synaptic circuits. Research in humans and in animal models supports the hypothesis that socio-emotional deprivation and emotional trauma during early childhood may leave 'scars' in prefronto-limbic function, brain regions that are essential for emotional behaviour, le

The paradox of cooperation benefits.

It seems obvious that as the benefits of cooperation increase, the share of cooperators in the population should also increase. It is well known that positive assortment between cooperative types, for instance in spatially structured populations, provide better conditions for the evolution of cooperation than complete mixing. This study demonstrates that, assuming positive assortment, under most conditions higher cooperation benefits also increase the share of cooperators. On the other hand, under a specified range of payoff values, when at least two payoff parameters are modified, the reverse

Hypersexuality and dysexecutive syndrome after a thalamic infarct.

Hypersexuality can result from insults to several neuroanatomical structures that regulate sexual behavior. A case is presented of an adult male with a thalamic infarct resulting in a paramedian thalamic syndrome, consisting of hypersomnolence, confabulatory anterograde amnesia (including reduplicative paramnesia), vertical gaze deficits, and hypophonic speech. A dysexecutive syndrome also manifested, consisting of social disinhibition, apathy, witzelsucht, motor inhibition deficits, and environmental dependence. Hypersexuality uncharacteristic of his premorbid behavior was evident in instance

[New stipulations for rehabilitation of mentally ill. Will return to normal life be facilitated?].

Current changes in the laws pertaining to mental disorders are mainly concerned with the redefinition in the Sozialgesetzbuch IX (SGB IX) [Social Law] of the term "disability", and the forthcoming introduction of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). Accordingly, the rehabilitation of the mentally disturbed will be based on an integrative bio-psychosocial treatment concept, which--in parallel with curative therapy--right from the beginning envisages measures aimed at reintegration of the patient into daily/occupational life. On the basis of the ICF, all

Reading attainment and juvenile delinquency.

Structural equation modelling was used with data from a longitudinal study of child development (N = 698) to examine relationships between early reading attainment and antisocial behaviour at ages 7 and 9 years and subsequent reading and delinquent behaviour in adolescence. While reading, analysed as a continuous variable, did not directly influence later delinquency, antisocial behaviour during the early school years was strongly predictive of delinquency at age 15 years, particularly for boys, and had a detrimental effect on reading. These findings were independent of social disadvantage, an

Panic and phobic disorders in patients with obsessive compulsive disorder.

Obsessive compulsive disorder shares numerous clinical features with other anxiety disorders. To study the relationship between OCD and other anxiety disorders, the authors administered the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III to 36 OCD patients. Thirty-nine percent (14) of patients reported a lifetime history of panic attacks, and 14% (5) met DSM-III-R criteria for panic disorder at the time of interview. Fourteen percent (5) met criteria for social phobias, and 19% (7) met criteria for simple phobias. Eighteen patients were treated with clomipramine in doses of at least 100 mg/day for 3

Prodromal symptoms and prevention of relapse in schizophrenia.

There has been little systematic study of early signs of relapse in schizophrenia. Determination of a prodromal symptom profile could facilitate early intervention before the development of a full-blown episode. A structured questionnaire was used to assess prodromal symptoms in two samples of schizophrenic patients, one of which included family informants. The symptoms most frequently mentioned as appearing or worsening before psychotic episodes were tenseness/nervousness, decreased appetite, trouble concentrating, difficulty sleeping, depression, and social withdrawal. Subsequent prospective

Beyond the clinic: The role of the psychiatrist in practicing pragmatic solidarity.

Psychiatrists are trained to evaluate biological, psychological, and social dimensions of illness simultaneously, yet the dominant frameworks governing psychiatric practice remain oriented toward individual symptom management rather than the structural conditions that produce these symptoms. This essay argues that psychiatrists working in global mental health contexts carry an ethical obligation that extends beyond diagnosis and treatment: to practice what Paul Farmer termed pragmatic solidarity, the practice of standing alongside communities to address the upstream drivers of mental distress

The Maculalactone Biosynthetic Gene Cluster, a Cryptic Furanolide Pathway Revealed in Nodularia sp. NIES-3585.

Cyanobacteria have long been recognized as a prolific source of bioactive natural products (NPs). Among these are the furanolides, a structurally diverse class of compounds first discovered in the 1980s. Furanolides are characterized by a γ-butyrolactone core bearing aromatic or aliphatic substituents at the α- and β-positions and an aromatic substituent at the γ-position. Recent advances in understanding the genetic basis of furanolide biosynthesis have enabled genome mining approaches to discover related cryptic furanolide biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs). In this work, we identified and cl

Region-function specificity of structural brain alterations associated with non-suicidal self-injury in young people.

BACKGROUND: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is prevalent among young people and has been theoretically associated with mentalizing - the capacity to understand behavior in terms of mental states. However, the structural correlates of this capacity, and their relationship to different NSSI motivations, remain unknown. METHODS: We examined the structure of brain regions implicated in mentalizing and region-function specificity in 173 young people (aged 10-24; NSSI group, n = 117; non-NSSI comparison group, n = 56). Structural MRI data (n = 132) were analyzed across seven a priori mentalizing ne

Age-dependent reorganization of behavioral and striatal function in Cntnap2 knockout mice.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by persistent deficits in social communication and the presence of restricted and repetitive behaviors. While ASD has a neurodevelopmental origin, it remains a lifelong condition, yet little is known about how its behavioral and neural features evolve across adulthood. Here, we investigated behavioral, synaptic, and structural alterations across the transition from early to mature adulthood in Cntnap2 knockout mice, a widely used model of ASD. Using a longitudinal behavioral approach combined with electrophysiological recordings and morphological

Beyond Individual Risk: A Qualitative Exploration of Intersectional HIV Vulnerabilities Among Black Cisgender Women in Baltimore.

Black cisgender women in the USA experience compounded challenges in protecting themselves from HIV. While prevention efforts often focus on individual-level behaviors, structural and contextual factors critically shape HIV vulnerability and access to care. We conducted qualitative in-depth interviews between October 2021 and April 2023 with 26 Black cisgender women aged 18 to 44 who reported inconsistent condom use and vaginal or anal sex with a male partner in the past 6 months. We used a combined inductive and deductive approach to analyze the data and presented illustrative themes across B

Occupation-Based Reentry Strategies: Addressing Systemic Barriers to Reduce Recidivism Among Ex-Offenders.

BACKGROUND: Recidivism presents significant barriers to occupational performance and community reintegration. Individuals transitioning from incarceration often face structural stigma, limited access to meaningful occupation, and disrupted occupational identity. These challenges fall within the scope of occupational therapy, yet the profession's role in reentry remains underexplored in the literature. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we set out to explore the lived experiences of formerly incarcerated individuals and examine how recidivism affects occupational performance and community participation

Brain Structural Covariance Network in Asperger Syndrome Differs From Those in Autism Spectrum Disorder and Healthy Controls.

INTRODUCTION: Autism is a heterogeneous neurodevelopmental disorder associated with social, cognitive and behavioral impairments. These impairments are often reported along with alteration of the brain structure such as abnormal changes in the grey matter (GM) density. However, it is not yet clear whether these changes could be used to differentiate various subtypes of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). METHOD: We compared the regional changes of GM density in ASD, Asperger's Syndrome (AS) individuals and a group of healthy controls (HC). In addition to regional changes itself, the amount of GM

A fetal reduction from twin to singleton based on sonography and cell-free fetal DNA testing: A sequential approach to old pitfalls.

OBJECTIVE: We examined the potential value of combining ultrasound and non-invasive prenatal screening (NIPS) of maternal blood to screen for major aneuploidies as an early approach before selective fetal reduction from twin pregnancy to singleton. STUDY DESIGN: The sample was composed of pregnant women with di-chorionic di-amniotic twins who chose to undergo fetal reduction to singleton at 12-24 weeks of gestation. These women were asked to provide a blood sample for cell-free fetal DNA (cffDNA) testing prior to fetal reduction. RESULTS: A total of 24 pregnant women with a twin pregnancy pr

Altered Gray Matter Volume and Resting-State Connectivity in Individuals With Internet Gaming Disorder: A Voxel-Based Morphometry and Resting-State Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Study.

Neuroimaging studies on the characteristics of individuals with Internet gaming disorder (IGD) have been accumulating due to growing concerns regarding the psychological and social problems associated with Internet use. However, relatively little is known about the brain characteristics underlying IGD, such as the associated functional connectivity and structure. The aim of this study was to investigate alterations in gray matter (GM) volume and functional connectivity during resting state in individuals with IGD using voxel-based morphometry and a resting-state connectivity analysis. The part

Type and timing of childhood maltreatment and reduced visual cortex volume in children and adolescents with reactive attachment disorder.

Reactive attachment disorder (RAD) is a severe social functioning disorder associated with early childhood maltreatment where the child displays emotionally withdrawn/inhibited behaviors toward caregivers. Brain regions develop at different rates and regions undergoing rapid change may be particularly vulnerable during these times to stressors or adverse experiences. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of type and timing of childhood adversities on structural alterations in regional gray matter (GM) volume in maltreated children with RAD. Research Review: Neural response to threat in children, adolescents, and adults after child maltreatment - a quantitative meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Child maltreatment is common and has long-term consequences for affective function. Investigations of neural consequences of maltreatment have focused on the amygdala. However, developmental neuroscience indicates that other brain regions are also likely to be affected by child maltreatment, particularly in the social information processing network (SIPN). We conducted a quantitative meta-analysis to: confirm that maltreatment is related to greater bilateral amygdala activation in a large sample that was pooled across studies; investigate other SIPN structures that are likely candi

Innovative approaches to promoting cervical health and raising cervical cancer awareness by use of existing cultural structures in resource-limited countries: experiences with traditional marriage counseling in Zambia.

The Cervical Cancer Prevention Program in Zambia (CCPPZ) has increasingly used community-level structures to increase the uptake and ensure the sustainability of the program. Traditional marriage counselors, the alangizi, who have existed in the Zambian society for many years, are one of the structures used by the program to impart cervical cancer knowledge and increase access to screening and care using an existing community structure. Several steps were followed in developing this intervention: (a) ensuring the alangizi understood the process of screening by encouraging them to go through th
