Few published reports exist describing morbidity and mortality in domestic zebra finch colonies maintained in a laboratory animal setting. A retrospective study of clinical disease and mortality in quarantined adult zebra finches was performed. Animals were observed during the 2 week quarantine period and for at least 1 month afterwards (42 days). In this study the influence of toxic shock syndrome toxin produced by Staphylococcus aureus on the organism of piglets of Minnesota race is presented. Animals were tested in two groups: conventional and gnotobiotic and they were given the toxin intradermally in two doses 10 and 100 micrograms/kg of body weight. Five patients with neonatal infective endocarditis were reviewed, two of whom survived. Infection was caused by Staphylococcus aureus in four and by Candida albicans in one. All cases of bacterial endocarditis had clinical signs of septicaemia, positive blood cultures, thrombocytopenia, microscopic haematuria, and heart murmurs. A modified ELISA for the detection of S. aureus strains producing toxic shock syndrome toxin (TSST-1) is described. Polystyrene balls are coated with specific sheep antibody and incubated with an over-night culture of suspected colonies. Persistent perineal sinus is a common complication following proctectomy for inflammatory bowel disease. Complete excision of the sinus tract and obliteration of dead space have been stressed as important aspects of treatment. A patient is described in whom the perineal sinus persisted despite three surgical attempts at cure. Combined perineal exploration and laparotomy revealed a communicating peritoneal-perineal fistula. A combined perineal and peritoneal approach may be indicated in treating the perineal sinus that persists despite perineal excision.

A consecutive series of 16 cases of psoas abscess managed over a 10-year period at the Bristol Royal Infirmary is presented. Tuberculosis accounted for 4 patients all normally resident in the United Kingdom. Intraabdominal inflammatory disorders accounted for 9 of the cases with Crohn's disease being the commonest of these with 5 cases. This is a report of a 6-year-old boy with repeated staphylococcus infections especially in the hairy region of the head. Investigating the disease an extremely elevated IgE of 10,000 KU/l was found, specific IgE in RAST only at a low level. The immunologic investigations showed a reduction of the T-suppressor-cells and an increase of IgG levels. Defects of phagocytosis or chemotaxis could not be demonstrated.

Decreased neutrophil (PMN) chemotaxis is thought to contribute to the increased morbidity and mortality from infection in newborn infants. Pentoxifylline, a methylxanthine, has previously been shown to augment PMN chemotaxis in vitro. The authors therefore investigated the effects of pentoxifylline on 1) in vitro PMN chemotaxis, 2) in vivo leukocyte accumulation, and 3) protection against Staphylococcus aureus infection in newborn mice. Among the surgical complications of intravenous drug addiction, pyogenic splenic abscess is considered to be a rare entity. A review of the literature reveals only 24 cases of splenic abscess secondary to this particular etiology. Phlyctenular keratoconjunctivitis is now a rare clinical entity. Histologic staging has been updated by infection-immunological findings: phlyctenules have been identified as delayed-type cellmediated immune responses involving bacterial, mycobacterial, chlamydial, fungal or parasitic pathogens. Establishment of a correct diagnosis should include conjunctival and systemic work-ups for pathogenic agents. Case reports of three patients are presented.
