Veterans who have been deployed to combat often have complex medical histories including some combination of traumatic brain injury (TBI); mental health problems; and other chronic, medically unexplained symptoms (i.e., chronic multisymptom illness [CMI] clusters). How these multiple pathologies relate to functional health is unclear. In the current study, 120 Veterans (across multiple combat cohorts) underwent comprehensive clinical evaluations and completed self-report assessments of mental health symptoms (Patient Health Questionnaire-2 [PHQ-2], PTSD Checklist-Civilian Version [PCL-C]) and

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic lower limb amputees have an increased morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular disease. Risk factors for this amplified morbidity and the involved pathophysiologic mechanisms have not been comprehensively studied.
METHODS: The MEDLINE database was reviewed, with case-controlled studies and nested in cohort studies eligible for inclusion in this analysis.
RESULTS: Insulin resistance, psychological stress and patients' deviant behaviors are prevalent in traumatic lower limb amputees. Each of these factors may have systemic consequences on the arterial system and m

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) and anxiety disorders are common and result in considerable suffering and economic loss. People suffering from major depressive disorder and/or anxiety disorders are commonly encountered in the primary care setting. Unfortunately, most people with these disorders remain either untreated or inadequately treated; current data suggest that general practitioners fail to diagnose up to half of cases of major depressive disorder or anxiety. There is a need for screening tools that will help physicians and other professionals in primary care recognize and a

Background: Problematic smartphone use has emerged as a growing concern among young adults and has been linked to adverse mental health outcomes. However, limited research has examined how protective factors such as resilience may buffer the relationship between smartphone addiction and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Methods: Participants (n = 491, X¯ age = 21.22 years) were students enrolled at a university in the Western Cape province of South Africa. They completed three standardized measures: the Smartphone Application-Based Addiction Scale, the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale-10,

Psychotic experiences (PEs) are prevalent in the general population, particularly in adolescents. PEs are associated with various negative outcomes such as psychotic, depressive, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorders and suicidal behavior. Recent studies in the general population have suggested that what makes PEs relevant is not so much the experiences per se, but their association with non-psychotic comorbidity and other transdiagnostic domains. Thus, there is a need for a better understanding of how PEs exist in a larger psychopathological context in adolescents. In the present study

The primary aim of the study was to analyze differences in post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and quality of life (QoL) between women with and without severe fear of childbirth postpartum (PP FOC). The secondary aims were to analyze the correlation between PP FOC and PTSS, and PP FOC and QoL, in women undergoing complicated childbirth. This cross-sectional study was conducted in South-East Sweden. Women aged ≥ 18 years who had undergone complicated childbirth (i.e., acute or emergency cesarean section, vacuum extraction, child in need of neonatal care, manual placenta removal, sphincter rup

Moderate-to-severe traumatic brain injury is one of the strongest environmental risk factors for the development of neurodegenerative diseases such as late-onset Alzheimer's disease, although it is unclear whether mild traumatic brain injury, or concussion, also confers risk. This study examined mild traumatic brain injury and genetic risk as predictors of reduced cortical thickness in brain regions previously associated with early Alzheimer's disease, and their relationship with episodic memory. Participants were 160 Iraq and Afghanistan War veterans between the ages of 19 and 58, many of who

Childhood adversity can induce maladaptive behaviors and increase risk for affective disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, personality disorders, and vulnerability to stress in adulthood. Deprivation of maternal care interrupts brain development through the disturbance of various neurotransmitters, however, the details remain unclear. The features of the symptoms of disorders are largely determined by early stress protocol, genetic characteristics (line), and the sex of the animals. The purpose of current study was (1) to assess behavioral changes in adult Wistar rats of both sexes after

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD), a cause of acute coronary syndrome predominantly affecting women, is associated with substantial psychological distress. Fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD), a nonatherosclerotic vascular disorder frequently associated with SCAD, adds clinical complexity and may exacerbate distress. However, differences in patient characteristics between SCAD patients with and without FMD remain poorly studied.
OBJECTIVES: The objective of the study was to compare demographic, clinical, and psychological characteristics of SCAD patients with and without FMD

Previous studies have demonstrated relations between spontaneous neural activity evaluated by resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and symptom severity in post-traumatic stress disorder. However, few studies have used brain-based measures to identify imaging associations with illness severity at the level of individual patients. This study applied connectome-based predictive modeling (CPM), a recently developed data-driven and subject-level method, to identify brain function features that are related to symptom severity of trauma survivors. Resting-state fMRI scans and cl

Direct trauma exposure (DTE) affects both emotional and cognitive functioning, yet the mechanisms linking DTE to anxiety remain insufficiently understood. A community sample of 574 adults completed measures of state anxiety, executive function difficulties (EFD) and emotional entitlement following war-related DTE. Results indicated that DTE participants reported higher anxiety and EFD, lower levels of positive and uncompromised entitlement compared to non-exposed participants. EFD was positively associated with anxiety, and DTE was indirectly associated with anxiety through EFD, reflecting an

"Javier" is an 8-year-old boy with a complex psychosocial history presenting for a developmental-behavioral pediatrics consultation because of concerns regarding hyperactivity (affecting safety) and developmental delays, including "lack of independence." He is not yet toilet trained and in his mother's words, "he has the mindset of a child that is much younger than his actual age." Javier's family emigrated to the United States from Central America a year ago to seek asylum. During his family's journey to the United States, Javier and his mother were kidnapped and sexually assaulted. On settli

During the COVID-19 pandemic, healthcare workers (HCWs) experienced several changes in their work (e.g., longer hours, new policies) that affected their mental health. In this study, an umbrella review and meta-analysis of meta-analyses was conducted to examine the prevalence of various mental health problems experienced by HCWs during the COVID-19 pandemic. We conducted a systematic review searching PubMed, EMBASE, PsycINFO, Cochrane Library, and Scopus databases (PROSPERO: CRD42022304823). We performed a meta-analysis to summarize prevalence of different mental health problems and examined w

Background and objectives: In the last decade, Europe has witnessed a substantial increase in asylum applications, resulting in a growing backlog of cases. The prolonged wait has been associated with elevated risks of mental disorders, diminished psychological well-being, and reduced quality of life. Existing systematic reviews focus on multiple post-migration factors; however, delay was identified as a key contributor to poor mental health and decreased emotional wellbeing. Our review focuses on this factor and builds on existing literature. Methods: We conducted a systematic review and narrat

Clinically derived theoretical models of dissociative identity disorder (DID) suggest that these individuals experience shifts in cognitive functioning between identity states. While prior research has found no objective inter-identity differences in memory, the present study investigated whether such differences are evident in a related cognitive domain: attentional processing. It was hypothesized that individuals with DID would exhibit differences in their attentional bias (AB) toward concern-related stimuli. They were compared to individuals with PTSD who experienced interpersonal childhood

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to explore the heterogeneity of psychological states among civilians during the COVID-19 pandemic and the patterns of change over time. The focus was on Post-Traumatic Stress Symptoms (PTSS) and sleep quality.
METHODS: The PCL-5 and a simplified Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index were utilized to measure PTSS and sleep quality. Initial data collection in February 2021 yielded 542 responses, with a follow-up 11 months later capturing 329 valid responses. Latent Profile Analysis identified psychological response heterogeneity, while Latent Transition Analysis and vari

BACKGROUND: The Kahramanmaraş earthquakes in February 2023 represented a disaster within a disaster, as northwest Syria had been affected by years of war. Literature on the immediate psychological impact of such natural disasters in high-adversity populations is lacking.
AIMS: To examine prevalences, longitudinal trajectories and cognitive predictors of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression and generalised anxiety disorder (GAD) in survivors of armed conflict in northwest Syria exposed to the Kahramanmaraş earthquakes.
METHOD: We assessed self-reported PTSD, depression and GAD sy

BACKGROUND: Previous research has indicated high levels of PTSD among people with substance use disorder (SUD). This study expands that work to a Danish SUD population, assessing the prevalence of ICD-11 PTSD diagnoses, sociodemographics, and trauma- and substance-related factors. We also compare differences between individuals in treatment for alcohol use disorder (AUD) and drug use disorder (DUD).
METHODS: The study used a multi-site approach, with data from five Danish SUD treatment settings. A total of 1347 adults were interviewed as part of an initial structured screening for SUD treatme

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a common psychopathological outcome of sexual assault. Peritraumatic tonic immobility (TI; involuntary "freezing") during sexual assault has been linked with worsened PTSD symptoms, yet little research has examined these effects longitudinally. The present study aimed to examine the effects of TI on the severity of PTSD symptoms, negative posttraumatic cognitions (NPC), and dissociative symptoms over 1 year among 112 female survivors of sexual assault aged 16-30 years. Multilevel linear regressions evaluated the effects of time since sexual assault, TI s
