von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) disease is an autosomal-dominant familial cancer syndrome associated with mutations of the VHL tumor suppressor gene (3p25-26). Its estimated incidence ranges from 1 in 36,000 to 1 in 53,000 with a penetrance of up to 95% by age 60. Genotype-phenotype correlation divides VHL into two broad clinical subtypes. Type 1 VHL is predominantly associated with large deletion or truncation mutations which result in an encoded protein with very little or no activity. It is associated with retinal and CNS hemangioblastoma and renal cell carcinoma but not pheochromocytoma. Type 2 is…

Chronic prostatitis are caused by infection in 5-10% of cases and other entities are called "chronic pelvic pain syndrome". The current classifications are based on the presence or absence of inflammation or infection in the prostatic secretions. The new concept of clinical phenotype "UPOINT" offers six domains (urinary, psychosocial, organ-specific, infectious, neurological, systemic and related to muscle tension) and can guide treatment according to the phenotype expressed by the patient. The therapeutic approach is based on the first use of antibiotics with or without alpha-blockers. Depend…

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the use of ultrasound for the diagnosis of intersection syndrome.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 1,131 reports from hand and wrist ultrasound examinations performed between 1 January 2008 and 31 December 2012 were re-evaluated. Two hundred and fifteen video clips present in the electronic database were reviewed by two musculoskeletal radiologists with 20 years of experience.
RESULTS: Of the 215 video clips reviewed, 21 patients were diagnosed with intersection syndrome. The mean age was 45 years (ranging from 22 to 60); 15 were male (13 with proximal intersection sy…

Nevus comedonicus is an uncommon skin abnormality characterized by an aggregation of dilated follicular orifices filled with keratinous material. Nevus comedonicus is occasionally complicated with other conditions including cataracts, skeletal defects, central nervous system abnormalities or other extra-cutaneous diseases (nevus comedonicus syndrome). Although most cases of nevus comedonicus occur unilaterally on the face, neck and chest, the lesions occasionally show a bilateral distribution (bilateral nevus comedonicus). We report here an unusual case of bilaterally disseminated nevus comedo…

BACKGROUND: Coxa saltans refers to a constellation of diagnoses that cause snapping of the hip and is a major cause of anterior hip pain in dancers. When the internal type is accompanied by weakness or pain, it is referred to as iliopsoas syndrome. Iliopsoas syndrome is the result of repetitive active hip flexion in abduction and can be confused with other hip pathology, most commonly of labral etiology.
PURPOSE: To report the incidence, clinical findings, treatment protocol, and results of treatment for iliopsoas syndrome in a population of dancers.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case series; …

Zellweger syndrome (ZS) is a severe manifestation of disease within the spectrum of peroxisome biogenesis disorders that includes neonatal adrenoleukodystrophy, infantile Refsum disease, and rhizomelic chondroplasia punctata. Patients with ZS present in the neonatal period with a characteristic phenotype of distinctive facial stigmata, pronounced hypotonia, poor feeding, hepatic dysfunction, and often seizures and boney abnormalities. In patients with ZS, a mutation in one of the PEX genes coding for a peroxin (a peroxisome assembly protein) creates functionally incompetent organelles causing …

Psoriatic onychopachydermoperiostitis (POPP) syndrome characterizes a clinical variant of psoriatic arthritis originally described by Fournie et al in 1989. Both great toes are generally affected presenting with nail changes, painful swelling of the soft tissue close to the distal phalanx as well as specific radiologic changes such as periosteal reaction and bone erosions of the distal phalanges. Joint involvement is characteristically absent and classic psoriatic lesions may be associated. Painful symptoms may lead to severe functional and quality of life impairment. Traditional systemic trea…

Eagle syndrome is characterized by secondary calcification and elongation of the styloid process. Eagle syndrome is often associated with sharp, intermittent pain along the path of the glossopharyngeal nerve located in the hypopharynx and at the base of the tongue. In some cases, the stylohyoid apparatus can compress the internal and/or the external carotid arteries and their perivascular sympathetic fibres, resulting in a persistent pain radiating throughout the carotid territory. The pathogenesis of the syndrome is not understood. The authors report the case of a 52-year-old woman with post …

Solitary rectal ulcer syndrome (SRUS) is a chronic, benign, polymorphic disease of the rectum, the final diagnosis of which is based on histopathologic criteria. Microscopic examination shows glandular changes, oedema and obliteration of the normal architecture in the region of the lamina propria, with muslce fibre penetrating into lamina. Although SRUS pathogenesis is bound up with defecation disorder, it still remains unclear. Disease symptoms are nonspecific--in most cases defecation disorders appear (incomplete defecation, blood and mucus in stool). In some patients emotional disorders can…

Tourette syndrome is a chronic neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by motor and vocal tics. In the majority of cases, tics are associated by behavioral disorders such as obsessive-compulsive behavior. First symptoms typically appear in early childhood. Mostly symptoms disappear when adulthood is reached. Treatment options consist of behavioral therapy and medication. In refractory cases, surgery may be an option. In the past, several attempts have been made to treat therapy-refractory patients through neurosurgical ablative procedures. In 1999, deep brain stimulation was introduced as a no…

Lyell's syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) is a rare dermatological disease that causes serious morbidity and mortality. It is most commonly drug induced. The authors report the case of a 57-year-old woman who was admitted to our hospital with severe rash all over the body. She had been previously submitted to brain surgery for total resection of a large meningioma and medicated with phenytoin for seizures prophylaxis. During this treatment, erythematous lesions and blisters were observed first on her face and trunk and then spreading to the entire body. Detachment of the skin, as we…

BACKGROUND: Avellis' syndrome (lateral medulla oblongata ischaemia) is a rare neurological disorder. Early recognition of brain stem infarction may prevent referral to specialists other than a neurologist.

She was also hoarse and had a tingling feeling on the left side of her face, and in her left arm and leg. A neurologist was consulted and diagnosed Avellis' syndrome. MRI of the brain revealed ischaemia in the lateral medulla oblongata on the right side…
