Cortical morphology and illness insight in patients with schizophrenia.

Insight into illness in schizophrenia (SZ) patients has a major impact on treatment adherence and outcome. Previous studies have linked distinct deviations of brain structure to illness insight, specifically in frontoparietal and subcortical regions. Some of these abnormalities are thought to reflect aberrant cortical development. In this study, we used cross-sectional data to examine associations between illness insight and two cortical surface markers that are known to follow distinct neurodevelopmental trajectories, i.e. cortical gyrification (CG) and thickness (CT). CG and CT was investiga

Altered Heschl's gyrus duplication pattern in first-episode schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Reduced gray matter volumes in the superior temporal gyrus and its subregions, such as Heschl's gyrus (HG) and the planum temporale (PT), have been reported in schizophrenia (Sz). However, it remains unclear whether patients exhibit an altered sulcogyral pattern on the superior temporal plane. METHODS: This magnetic resonance imaging study examined the distribution of HG duplication patterns [i.e., single HG, common stem duplication (CSD), or complete posterior duplication (CPD)] and their relationships with clinical variables and gray matter volumes in the HG and PT of 64 first-e

Subjective distinguishability of seizure and non-seizure Déjà Vu: A case report, brief literature review, and research prospects.

Roughly two-thirds of all people report having experienced déjà vu-the odd feeling that a current experience is both novel and a repeat or replay of a previous, unrecalled experience. Reports of an association between déjà vu and seizure aura symptomatology have accumulated for over a century, and frequent déjà vu is also now known to be associated with focal seizures, particularly those of a medial temporal lobe (MTL) origin. A longstanding question is whether seizure-related déjà vu has the same basis and is the same subjective experience as non-seizure déjà vu. Survey research suggests that…

[Van Gogh's Pathography and the Influence of Illness on Painting].

There are many theories about Van Gogh's illness, including temporal lobe epilepsy, schizophrenia, Meniere's disease, manic depression, digitalis/absinthe poisoning, and acute intermittent porphyria, which, along with the truth of the ear-cutting incident, remain a great mystery. Van Gogh is often described as an "artist of madness and passion," but except for seven episodes of severe mental disturbance, his extraordinary creativity was maintained to the end. Reading "Van Gogh's Letters" reveals a very thoughtful and intelligent Van Gogh, far from being insane. Perhaps the essence of Van Gogh …

Right entorhinal cortical thickness is associated with Mini-Mental State Examination scores from multi-country datasets using MRI.

PURPOSE: To discover common biomarkers correlating with the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) scores from multi-country MRI datasets. METHODS: The first dataset comprised 112 subjects (49 men, 63 women; range, 46-94 years) at the National Hospital Organization Kyushu Medical Center. A second dataset comprised 300 subjects from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) database (177 men, 123 women; range, 57-91 years). Three-dimensional T1-weighted MR images were collected from both datasets. In total, 14 deep gray matter volumes and 70 cortical thicknesses were obtained from M

Structural development of cortical lobes during the first 6 months of life in infant macaques.

This study mapped the developmental trajectories of cortical regions in comparison to overall brain growth in typically developing, socially-housed infant macaques. Volumetric changes of cortical brain regions were examined longitudinally between 2-24 weeks of age (equivalent to the first 2 years in humans) in 21 male rhesus macaques. Growth of the prefrontal, frontal, parietal, occipital, and temporal cortices (visual and auditory) was examined using MRI and age-specific infant macaque brain atlases developed by our group. Results indicate that cortical volumetric development follows a cubic

Beyond the Wada: An updated approach to pre-surgical language and memory testing: An updated review of available evaluation techniques and recommended workflow to limit Wada test use to essential clinical cases.

The Intracarotid amobarbital test (IAT), also called Wada test, is considered the "gold standard" for lateralizing language dominance in the pre-surgical evaluation of patients with epilepsy. In addition, it has been further modified to assess the postoperative risk of amnesia in patients undergoing temporal lobectomy. Since then it has been utilized to lateralize language and assess pre-surgical memory function. Over the years, its popularity has declined due to several limitations and availability of alternative procedures like fMRI and MEG. A survey of its use in the pre-surgical evaluation…

Functional Connectivity as a Potential Mechanism for Language Plasticity.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Task fMRI is a clinical tool for language lateralization, but has limitations, and cannot provide information about network-level plasticity. Additional methods are needed to improve the precision of presurgical language mapping. We investigate language resting-state functional connectivity (RS fMRI; FC) in typically developing children (TD) and children with epilepsy. Our objectives were to (1) understand how FC components differ between TD children and those with epilepsy; (2) elucidate how the location of disease (frontal/temporal epilepsy foci) affects FC; and (3

Higher volumes of hippocampal subfields in pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Differences in hippocampus volume have been identified in adult patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). However, the role of this limbic structure in pediatric patients is unclear. This study aimed to investigate the hippocampus and its subregions in a sample of 29 children and adolescents with OCD compared to 28 healthy controls, matched for age, sex, education, and IQ. Volumetric segmentation was performed using the Freesurfer software to calculate the volumes of the subregions that reflect the hippocampal cytoarchitecture. The volumes of three anatomic subregions (tail, body, and

Transcriptome data of temporal and cingulate cortex in the Rett syndrome brain.

Rett syndrome is an X-linked neurodevelopmental disorder caused by mutation in the methyl-CpG-binding protein 2 gene (MECP2) in the majority of cases. We describe an RNA sequencing dataset of postmortem brain tissue samples from four females clinically diagnosed with Rett syndrome and four age-matched female donors. The dataset contains 16 transcriptomes, including two brain regions, temporal and cingulate cortex, for each individual. We compared our dataset with published transcriptomic analyses of postmortem brain tissue from Rett syndrome and found consistent gene expression alterations amo

Does an impaired lexicon produce legitimate alternative reading of components (LARC) errors in reading Japanese Kanji? Evidence from two-Kanji compound word reading in a Japanese-speaking patient with aphasia.

Several studies have reported a strong association between semantic system impairment and LARC error production. However, our patient with a left temporal lobe contusion, including the fusiform gyrus, showed LARC errors even in two-Kanji compound words, the meanings of which the patient understood. Also, the poor results of lexical decision and picture naming suggested problems in orthographic and phonological retrieval. From these results, we concluded that at least some LARC errors are independent of semantic impairment, and other explanations are needed for this type of error.

Cortical volume abnormalities in posttraumatic stress disorder: an ENIGMA-psychiatric genomics consortium PTSD workgroup mega-analysis.

Studies of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) report volume abnormalities in multiple regions of the cerebral cortex. However, findings for many regions, particularly regions outside commonly studied emotion-related prefrontal, insular, and limbic regions, are inconsistent and tentative. Also, few studies address the possibility that PTSD abnormalities may be confounded by comorbid depression. A mega-analysis investigating all cortical regions in a large sample of PTSD and control subjects can potentially provide new insight into these issues. Given this perspective, our group aggregated reg

Magnetic resonance features of the feline hippocampus in epileptic and non-epileptic cats: a blinded, retrospective, multi-observer study.

BACKGROUND: Hippocampal necrosis in cats has been reported to be associated with epileptic seizures. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features of temporal lobe (TL) abnormalities in epileptic cats have been described but MR images from epileptic and non-epileptic individuals have not yet been systematically compared. TL abnormalities are highly variable in shape, size and signal, and therefore may lead to varying evaluations by different specialists. The aim of this study was to investigate whether there were differences in the appearance of the TL between epileptic and non-epileptic cats, and…

The functional specialization of the planum temporale.

The planum temporale (PT) is an anatomically heterogeneous area with several architectonic subdivisions and extensive connections with other parts of the brain. Here I review a functional MRI study investigating the role of a functionally defined area (Spt) within the left PT in speech motor processing and discuss the functional properties of PT regions in the context of findings from recent neurophysiological and neuroimaging studies.

Topiramate-induced delusional parasitosis.

A 48-year-old woman with temporal lobe epilepsy and no prior history of psychiatric illness was started on topiramate (TPM). The dose was titrated up to 150 mg twice daily over 14 weeks and led to a significant reduction in seizure frequency. Upon reaching this dose, she developed intense pruritus and the firm belief that her skin was infected by parasites. She was diagnosed with delusional parasitosis (DP). Consequently, her TPM was weaned off and her DP settled completely without the use of antipsychotic medication. DP is characterized by the unshakeable conviction that small organisms infes…

Minicraniotomy treatment of an intracerebral epidermoid cyst.

Intracerebral epidermoid cysts are extremely rare. We report the case of a 16-year-old girl with an intracerebral epidermoid cyst in the left temporal lobe. The lesion was totally removed through a minimally invasive minicraniotomy by which we could obtain satisfactory intraoperative disclosure and manipulation. The incidence, clinical course, radiological features, surgical treatment, and complications of such a rare lesion are discussed.
