No previous study has investigated poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) surgical mesh augmentation in the repair of inferior pole patellar tendon rupture. We compared the biomechanical properties of transosseous patellar tendon repair with PLLA surgical mesh augmentation to transosseous repair without augmentation. Ten matched pairs of cadaveric knees were used. Specimens in each pair were randomized to undergo the transosseous technique alone or the transosseous technique augmented with a PLLA surgical mesh. An inferior pole patellar tendon rupture was simulated and the repair procedure was performed. S

BACKGROUND: In patients with a known unilateral posterosuperior rotator cuff tear (PSRCT), the ability to predict a contralateral PSRCT may assist in earlier diagnosis and improved patient outcomes.
PURPOSE: To determine factors associated with bilateral PSRCT and their most predictive combinations using a nonhospitalized general population.
STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study; Level of evidence, 3.
METHODS: This study involved 736 individuals (n = 1472 shoulders) drawn from a rural cohort. PSRCT was diagnosed using magnetic resonance imaging. Symptoms of the contralateral shoulder were not

BACKGROUND: Snapping triceps tendon is an increasingly recognized clinical entity, which is associated with a variety of pathologic factors. The causative factors include inherited structural or developmental variations, post-traumatic malalignment, and other reasons. The main complaint of patients with snapping lateral triceps are the snapping sensation, mild muscle weakness of elbow extension, with or without tenderness in distal triceps tendon. Many treatment options have been reported previously, including tendon resection and redirection.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 19-ye

Surgical treatment of bony mallet fingers is frequently recommended, but the evidence is sparse. This randomized clinical trial aimed to compare nonoperative splinting versus extension-block pinning of bony mallet fingers with involvement of more than one-third of the joint surface but without primary joint subluxation. Thirty-two patients were randomized and 28 fulfilled the protocol. At 6 months follow-up, there were no significant differences in active extension lag in the distal interphalangeal joint (the primary outcome) or in patient-reported function and pain scores. Flexion and active

Dorsal fracture-dislocations of the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint of the long fingers are in most cases unstable. They require surgery, whose primary aim is to restore and maintain articular congruency. While numerous techniques exist to treat these injuries, none have been shown to be superior to any of the others in terms of outcomes and complications. The least invasive techniques should be used as much as possible. We report here a rare case of incarceration of the flexor tendons in the PIP fracture which required open surgery.

BACKGROUND: Rupture of the distal biceps tendon is seen in both the emergency and primary care settings. It most commonly occurs after excessive tension exerted on a flexed forearm. Knowledge of the anatomy, pathophysiology, historical and physical examination findings, as well as the workup, diagnosis, and treatment of distal biceps tendon rupture are essential in achieving good outcomes, as delays in treatment can make surgical repair more challenging and less efficacious.
CASE REPORT: A healthy 38-year-old male presented to his primary care physician complaining of right elbow pain that st

UNLABELLED: Synovial chondromatosis is characterized by benign synovial proliferation that leads to chondral or osteochondral foci formation. In this case report, a right-handed female suffered from progressively worsening pain and limited mobility of forward elevation, abduction and external rotation in her right shoulder. A shoulder arthroscopy was conducted, during which, thickened bursal synovium and several loose bodies were observed, associated with bursal side tear of rotator cuff. A thorough synovectomy, subacromial debridement and acromioplasty were conducted. The pathological finding

The term "biceps brachii" is a Latin phrase meaning "two-headed (muscle) of the arm." As its name suggests, this muscle has two separate origins. The short head of biceps is extraarticular in location, originates from the coracoid process of the scapula, having a common tendon with the coracobrachialis muscle. The long head of biceps tendon (LBT) has a much more complex course, having an intracapsular and an extracapsular portion. The LBT originates from the supraglenoid tubercle, and in part, from the glenoid labrum; the main labral attachments vary arising from the posterior, the anterior of

PURPOSE: To compare tendon-bone interface motion and cyclic loading in a single-row, triple-loaded anchor repair with a suture-tape, rip-stop, double-row rotator cuff repair.
METHODS: Using 18 human shoulders from 9 matched cadaveric pairs, we created 2 groups of rotator cuff repairs. Group 1 was a double-row, rip-stop, suture-tape construct. Group 2 was a single-row, triple-loaded construct. Before mechanical testing, the supraspinatus footprint was measured with calipers. A superiorly positioned digital camera optically measured the tendon footprint motion during 60° of humeral internal and

The flexor carpi radialis is a wrist flexor and radial deviator with half the relative strength of flexor carpi ulnaris. In the majority of patients, the flexor carpi radialis tendon is expendable and is routinely used for various reconstructive procedures about the hand and wrist. Isolated flexor carpi radialis lacerations at the wrist are rare. Flexor carpi radialis tendon ruptures, which have been reported in association with distal radius fractures, longstanding osteoarthritis, and percutaneous treatment of scaphoid fractures, are usually treated non-operatively. We report a case of a trau

AIM: To determine the diagnostic accuracy of ultrasound to detect partial and complete thickness rotator cuff tears based on all available clinical trials.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: An electronic search of databases registering published and unpublished literature was conducted. All diagnostic accuracy studies that directly compared the accuracy of ultrasound (the index test) to either arthroscopic or open surgical findings (the reference test) for rotator cuff tear were included. The methodological quality of each included study was assessed using the QUADAS form. When appropriate, pooled sensi

Minimally invasive arthroscopic techniques for rotator cuff tears have been greatly advanced during the past decade. It is important to review the clinical presentation and common physical findings of a large or massive rotator cuff tear, essential preoperative imaging, and the principles and technical aspects of all-arthroscopic repair. An anatomic repair of the footprint must begin with an understanding of the three-dimensional morphology of the rotator cuff tear and an accurate reduction of the tear. A contracted, immobile massive rotator cuff tear is challenging. Advanced arthroscopic mobi
