BACKGROUND: Tearing and degeneration of the rotator cuff at the tendon-to-bone junction are common in adults aged ≥50 years. Few studies have reported on the relationship between estrogen and the rotator cuff enthesis. In addition to preventing bone loss, selective estrogen receptor modulators have been shown to improve tendon and muscle quality.
PURPOSE: To evaluate the effects of raloxifene (RLX) and vitamin D on rotator cuff tendon-to-bone healing in a rat model.
STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study.
METHODS: A total of 29 female rats (58 shoulders) were assigned to 4 groups: (1) co

BACKGROUND: Shoulder release and tendon transfer is frequently performed to address persistent weakness from neonatal brachial plexus palsy. Although postoperative improvements in motion are well described, associated deficits are poorly documented, and functional assessments are lacking. Loss of ability to reach midline can occur with surgery and may result in impairment. The purpose of this study was to comprehensively assess the gains, losses, functional changes, and patient-reported outcome associated with the authors' surgical approach.
METHODS: Consecutive patients undergoing surgery wi

BACKGROUND: Complete extension of the thumb and activation of the extensor pollicis longus (EPL) tendon are fundamental to ensure maximum function. Many EPL repair techniques are described in the literature.
METHODS: The authors present an alternative technique using the brachioradialis (BR) tendon. Thirty patients with injuries of the EPL tendon in zone 8 were studied. In all cases, neither direct suture repair nor traditional tendon transfer was possible.
RESULTS: Thumb extension was restored in all patients with satisfactory extension recovery. All patients achieved excellent extension; g

Hamstring strain injury (HSI) remains the most common muscle injury in high-intensity running in humans. The majority of acute HSI occur specifically within the proximal region of the long head of biceps femoris and there is a sustained interest among researchers in understanding the factors that predispose to HSI. The present critical review describes the current understanding of biceps femoris long head (BFlh) structural features that might influence strain injury risk. Inter-individual differences in muscle-tendon architecture and interactions, muscle fiber type and region-specific innervat

The aim of the study was to examine the immediate effect of 1 session of extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) on patellar tendon stiffness and to explore the relationship between the change in tendon stiffness and the pain intensity. Thirty-four male athletes aged 22.2 ± 3.8 with patellar tendinopathy were recruited. The participants were randomized into ESWT and sham groups. The ESWT group received 1500 impulses of ESWT at 4 Hz with maximal tolerable pain intensity and the sham group received intensities below 0.08 mJ/mm2. Supersonic Shearwave Imaging (SSI) was used to measure tendon shear

Muscle and tendon stiffness are related to sports performance, tendinopathy, and tendon degeneration. However, the effects of habitual loading on muscle and tendon mechanical properties are unclear. Using amateur basketball players as examples, we investigated the effects of mechanical loading on the stiffness of the gastrocnemius-Achilles tendon (AT) complex in non-dominant and dominant lower limbs. Then, we evaluated the correlation between gastrocnemius and AT stiffness. Forty participants (20 amateur basketball players; 20 normal non-athletic persons) were recruited for this study. Stiffne

Trapezius paralysis following injury to the spinal accessory nerve can be a debilitating complication resulting from lymph node biopsy, radical neck dissection, or penetrating trauma in the region of the posterior cervical triangle. Disruption of the delicate muscular balance in the shoulder girdle may result in lateral scapular winging, ipsilateral upper extremity radiculopathy, and limited shoulder function and range of motion. Spontaneous recovery with nonoperative management is possible in some patients, and restoration of function after reparative neural procedures has been observed in pa

INTRODUCTION: Adult acquired flatfoot deformity (AAFD) caused by posterior tibial tendon dysfunction (PTTD) can lead to the development of peritalar subluxation (PTS) and much more rarely to lateral subtalar dislocation.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 75-year-old woman was referred to our hospital with an approximately 15-year history of pain in her right foot without obvious trauma. The lateral shifting foot deformity had worsened in the previous 5 years. On presentation, she had tenderness over the talonavicular joint, and the skin overlying the talar head on the medial foot was taut. Imaging reve

More than 120,000 anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries occur every year in the United States, mostly during the high school and college years. The incidence of these injuries is slowly increasing, especially in females. This is likely caused by their increasing participation in high school and other organized sports. In addition, several studies have shown that female athletes are at an increased risk of ACL injury in sex comparable sports. The goal of this study was to evaluate the functional outcome of Arthroscopic anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction using Bone-Patellar tendon- Bo

BACKGROUND: Open Giftbox repair of the Achilles tendon has good biomechanical advantages, but it is not minimally invasive. We designed a peritendon fixation technique, the "Locking Block Modified Krackow" (LBMK) technique, to meet minimally invasive needs. This study used a simulated protocol of early rehabilitation to compare the biomechanics of LBMK with those of the Giftbox technique.
METHODS: Twenty fresh bovine Achilles tendon specimens were randomly assigned to either the LBMK group or the Giftbox group. The LBMK technique and the Giftbox technique were used as the main suture configur
