OBJECTIVE: To characterize cystoscopy findings performed for cause after prostate brachytherapy in men.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review of cystoscopy reports in 2532 men treated with prostate brachytherapy with or without external beam radiation therapy for clinically localized prostate cancer between 1990 and 2011 was performed. We investigated the relationship between relevant clinical and demographic characteristics with the development of particular cystoscopic findings in patients with hematuria or lower urinary tract symptoms.

The role of capsaicin-sensitive sensory nerves of the rat urinary bladder in xylene-induced cystitis was investigated. Instillation of xylene into the urinary bladder of female rats induced cystitis, e.g. detrusor hyperreflexia and increased vascular permeability. We report our experience of continent sigmoidostomy. The technique consisted in urinary diversion with sigmoid pouch and hydraulic valve. Renal transplant recipients with lower urinary tract dysfunction may be managed by urinary diversion or clean intermittent catheterization. To evaluate the comparative problems associated with each mode of therapy we studied 13 patients managed by clean intermittent catheterization (group 1, 6 patients) or urinary diversion (group 2, 7 patients). Total bladder replacement by an ileoascending colonic segment with adjunctive use of intermittent self-catheterization and secondary insertion of an artificial sphincter has been selectively employed in a group of male patients undergoing cystectomy for localized invasive bladder cancer and disabling interstitial cystitis. This bowel segment offers a capacious reservoir, an effective antireflux barrier, and a consistent tension-free colourethral or coloprostatic anastomosis. Mucous plug catheter obstruction is rarely a problem in this reservoir during the early postoperative course.

PURPOSE: Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome is a chronic urological condition diagnosed in nearly 8 million females in the United States. Whether urinary microbiota play an etiological role remains controversial. Most studies assessed the microbiota of interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome patients with voided or catheterized urine as a proxy for bladder urothelium; however, urine may not be a true reflection of the bladder microbiota. Bladder biopsy tissue may provide a more accurate, and thus more clinically relevant, picture of bladder microbiota.
