Intracellular human papillomavirus E6, E7 mRNA quantification predicts CIN 2+ in cervical biopsies better than Papanicolaou screening for women regardless of age.

CONTEXT: Cervical cancer screening in women younger than 30 years relies on cervical cytology because of the poor performance of human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA testing in this age group. OBJECTIVES: To determine the performance of in-cell HPV E6, E7 mRNA quantification (HPV OncoTect) for the detection of high-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia in women younger than 30 years. DESIGN: We analyzed 3133 cytology specimens from a screening population of women aged 19-75 years investigate HPV OncoTect as a triage/secondary screening test for atypical squamous cells of undetermined significan

Association of HPV16 E6 variants with diagnostic severity in cervical cytology samples of 354 women in a US population.

It has been suggested that DNA sequence variants of HPV16 contribute to differences in the behavior of individual cervical lesions. To address this question, we have analyzed the association of HPV16 variants with diagnostic severity in 354 HPV16-positive Oklahoman women. HPV16 variant status was determined by PCR amplification and DNA sequencing of the E6 open reading frame. European sequences were identified in 86% of samples and 14% were non-European. Of the 51 non-European cases, 61% were Asian-American, 23% African and 16% were Native American variants. European prototype and related vari

The health effects of diethylstilbestrol revisited.

Although diethylstilbestrol has not been prescribed commonly for more than 25 years, its effects on the health of exposed persons are still important. In this article, we summarize current information about the major health effects of diethylstilbestrol exposure and delineate implications for nurses. Nurses can help to identify persons at risk from prior diethylstilbestrol exposure, facilitate comprehensive assessments of persons exposed to diethylstilbestrol, and share current information about diethylstilbestrol.

Community level cancer control in a Texas barrio: Part I--Theoretical basis, implementation, and process evaluation.

A theory-based program that used peer modeling and a network of peer communicators to promote breast and cervical cancer screening was designed and implemented in a barrio of San Antonio with a population of approximately 25,000 adult women. The implementation process was evaluated and documented through field notes, archival documents, content analyses, interviews, surveys, etc. Over a 21-month period, a total of 156 new stories and a network for distribution of more than 80,000 print pieces carried messages about positive role models who were receiving Pap smears and mammograms. A group of 8

Uptake of breast and cervical cancer screening in four Gulf Cooperation Council countries.

In Gulf Cooperation Council States, there is limited information on national levels of mammography and Pap smear screening uptake. The aim of this study is to provide a baseline for national estimates for mammography and Pap smear screening and to explore associations between screening uptake and socioeconomic factors. The nationally representative World Health Survey Plus, implemented in 2008/2009 in Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates (UAE), was used. Uptake of mammography and Pap smear was estimated for each country, followed by the examination of associations between screen

Can the careHPV test performed in mobile units replace cytology for screening in rural and remote areas?

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA testing can be crucial for women who have limited access to traditional screening. The current study compared the results obtained through HPV DNA testing with those obtained through cytology-based screening. METHODS: A total of 3068 women aged 18 to 85 years were enrolled in an opportunistic cervical cancer screening program developed by the Barretos Cancer Hospital and performed by a team of health professionals working within a mobile unit from March to December 2012, followed by statistical analyses. For each patient, 2 different cervical samples

Obese women's barriers to mammography and pap smear: the possible role of personality.

Obese women are at increased risk of developing and dying from cancer, but are less likely than nonobese women to receive cancer screening examinations. Our qualitative study explores obese women's barriers to Pap smears and mammograms in greater depth than previous research. We also seek to understand why some obese women undergo screening whereas others do not. A purposive sample of moderately to severely obese women over age 40 was recruited from community-based organizations, health clinics, and retail establishments. Semi-structured in-depth interviews (N = 33) informed by the Theory of C

Unique variants of human papillomavirus genotypes 52 and 58 and risk of cervical neoplasia.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) 52 and 58 are oncogenic HPV types prevalent in Asia. Our study aims to explore intratypic variants of HPV 52 and 58 in Taiwan. A total of 11,923 women were enrolled from seven townships in 1991-1992. HPV DNA in their cervical cells was detected and typed by EasyChip® HPV blot. Among 424 participants infected with HPV 52 and/or 58, nucleotide variations were determined in cervical cell samples of 406 participants by the polymerase chain reaction sequencing of the long control region, E6 and E7 genes. Nonprototype-like variants including lineages B and C were detected

Comparative efficacy, feasibility and acceptability of HPV DNA testing on first-void urine versus self-collected vaginal samples: a real-world study in a resource-limited setting.

INTRODUCTION: Self-sampling for cervical cancer screening is a promising strategy to improve coverage and reduce strain on health systems. First-void urine (FVU) has emerged as a non-invasive alternative to self-collected vaginal samples for detecting high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV). However, most supporting evidence is from colposcopy clinic settings and not from screening settings. This community-based study in Eastern India aimed to (1) assess agreement between HPV testing on FVU and vaginal samples, (2) compare their accuracy in detecting cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 2 (CI
