BACKGROUND: Linezolid is an important therapeutic option for the treatment of infections caused by multiresistant Gram-positive bacteria such as vancomycin-resistant Enterococci (VRE) and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). However, the clinical benefit of linezolid is threatened by the emergence of resistant strains of MRSA and VRE reported in North America and Europe. For effective antimicrobial treatment, it is extremely important to have exact knowledge of drug concentrations at the site of action.
METHODS: A simple HPLC method for the rapid and precise determination of li

Resistance to antimicrobials is a significant and growing problem, limiting treatment options, especially for serious Gram-positive infections. Ceftobiprole is a novel broad-spectrum cephalosporin that is active in vitro against streptococci and staphylococci, including penicillin-resistant strains of pneumococci and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). It maintains the activity of extended-spectrum cephalosporins against Gram-negative bacteria, including Enterobacteriaceae. The in-vivo activity of ceftobiprole has been demonstrated in mouse sepsis and subcutaneous abscess model

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review summarises some of the notable papers on ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) from January 2003 to October 2004.
RECENT FINDINGS: Ventilator-associated pneumonia remains an important drain on hospital resources. All population groups are affected, but patients with VAP are more likely to be older, sicker, and male, with invasive medical devices in situ. Early VAP diagnosis is desirable to reduce VAP mortality and to retard emergence of multidrug-resistant microbes. This may be possible using preliminary culture results or intracellular organism in polymorphonuc

Staphylococcus aureus is a dreadful pathogen for mankind, causing boils, abscesses, wound infections, osteomyelitis, septicaemia, endocarditis, pneumonia, toxic shock syndrome, scalded skin syndrome, and food poisoning. The development of penicillin-, methicillin-, and vancomycin-resistant strains shows that S. aureus has an enormous adaptive power. Most methicillin-resistant strains of S. aureus (MRSA) are hospital-acquired, although an increasing number are reported to be community-acquired. A limited number of clones of MRSA have spread all over the world. Since most community-acquired MRSA

The antibacterial sensitivity patterns of gram-positive, nonsporeforming, anaerobic bacilli variously classed as Lactobacillus bifidus, Actinomyces bifidus, or Bifidobacterium were studied by the plate dilution method. A total of 34 strains, mostly from human feces, was studied. Three species, B. longum, B. adolescentis, and B. bifidum, were represented with 11, 11, and 6 strains, respectively. The other six strains fell into four other species. Most strains of all types resisted 100 mug/ml or more of neomycin, polymyxin B, and nalidixic acid. They were somewhat less resistant to kanamycin and

UNLABELLED: The treatment of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)-induced pneumonia with antibiotics alone poses considerable challenges. To address these challenges, low-frequency ultrasound (LFU) emerges as a promising approach. In this study, a mouse pneumonia model was established through intratracheal injection of MRSA to investigate the therapeutic efficacy of LFU in combination with antibiotics. Minimal inhibitory concentration was assessed, and the distribution of antibiotics in the lung and plasma was determined using liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry.

BACKGROUND: The SENTRY Antimicrobial Surveillance Program was established in 1997 and presently encompasses more than 750 000 bacterial isolates from over 400 medical centers worldwide. Among these pathogens, enterococci represents a prominent cause of bloodstream (BSIs), intra-abdominal (IAIs), skin and skin structure, and urinary tract infections (UTIs). In the present study, we reviewed geographic and temporal trends in Enterococcus species and resistant phenotypes identified throughout the SENTRY Program.
METHODS: From 1997 to 2016, a total of 49 491 clinically significant enterococci iso

Staphylococcus aureus invades eukaryotic cells. When methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) ATCC 33591 is phagocytized by human THP-1 macrophages, complete restoration of susceptibility to cloxacillin and meropenem is shown and the strain becomes indistinguishable from MSSA ATCC 25923 due to the acid pH prevailing in phagolysosomes (S. Lemaire et al., Antimicrob. Agents Chemother. 51:1627-1632, 2007). We examined whether this observation can be extended to (i) strains of current clinical and epidemiological interest (three hospital-acquired MRSA [HA-MRSA] strains, two community-acquired MRSA [

OBJECTIVE: The emergence of transferable linezolid resistance genes as optrA represents an increasing concern. This study characterizes the first optrA-positive E. faecalis (Efs) isolates associated with human infections in Portugal, while highlighting undetected colonization as a reservoir for dissemination within healthcare settings.
METHODS: Between July 2024-February 2025, three Efs isolates, classified as linezolid-resistant, were identified from different patients at a central hospital in Porto, Portugal. Two isolates were available for phenotypic/molecular testing and whole-genome sequ

INTRODUCTION: Nasal carriage of Community-Acquired Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) is recognised for its rapid community spread and tendency to cause various infections especially in communities with large populations and poor personal hygiene. The study investigated the prevalence and antimicrobial-resistance profile of CA-MRSA and evaluated possible risk factors among the healthy population. MATERIALS & METHODS: Using a multi-stage sampling technique, nasal swabs were collected from 700 apparently healthy residents of Ibadan during a 9-month period. All nasal swab sampl

Antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASPs) are essential in optimizing the use of antibiotics to address the global concern of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) have emerged as promising tools for enhancing ASPs efficiency by improving antibiotic prescription accuracy, resistance prediction, and dosage optimization. This systematic review evaluated the application of AI-driven ASPs, focusing on their methodologies, outcomes, and challenges. We searched all of the databases in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Embase using keywords related t

Antibiotics and herbicides are contaminants of emerging concern in aquatic environments. Lake Villarrica is a relevant freshwater body in Chile and was recently designated a 'saturated nutrient zone'. Here, we investigated the occurrence of multiple antibiotic resistance (MAR) and herbicide catabolic profiles among bacteria present in the surface sediments of Lake Villarrica. The occurrence of antibiotic-resistant genes (ARGs; blaTEM, catA and tetM) and herbicide-catabolic genes (HCGs; phnJ and atzA) was investigated by qPCR. Subsequently, the presence of culturable bacteria with multiple resi

CONTEXT: Adequate management of chronic dacryocystitis is an essential prerequisite before any intraocular surgery owing to a grave risk of endophthalmitis. The knowledge of bacteriology of chronic dacryocystitis would accentuate the choice of effective antimicrobial agents and thus help in reducing the irrational use of antimicrobial agents and subsequent development of drug resistance.
AIMS: We aimed to identify the causative bacterial flora and study the antimicrobial sensitivity and resistance pattern in cases of chronic dacryocystitis.
SETTINGS AND DESIGN: This was a cross-sectional obs
