Fractionated radiation therapy for vestibular schwannoma.

Vestibular schwannomas are the most common tumors of the cerebellopontine angle. Multiple management paradigms exist for patients with these benign tumors, including observation, microsurgery, stereotactic radiosurgery, and fractionated radiation therapy, or some combination of these. While the proper course of management is controversial, the goals of therapy are to achieve excellent local tumor control and optimize functional outcomes with as little treatment-related morbidity as possible. Decision-making is tailored to patient-specific factors such as tumor size, clinical presentation, pati

Voice Disorder Classifications: A Scoping Review - Part A.

Voice is a complex and multidimensional phenomenon of interest to different disciplines. Divergent terminologies and, consequently, classification systems constitute, historically, a difficulty in this field of knowledge, which limits communication between professionals from different countries, backgrounds, and clinical experiences, and well as limiting clinical management and discussion of scientific research findings. This article aims to map and analyze the different diagnostic classifications in voice by describing the findings of a scoping review, consisting of both electronic and manual

Pitch Variation in Children With Childhood Apraxia of Speech: Preliminary Findings.

Introduction Pitch variation, which refers to one's ability to vary fundamental frequency (F0) within or between syllables when speaking, has not been investigated in children with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS). However, pitch variation plays an important role in tone languages, as varying F0 patterns communicate different lexical meanings. This study investigated pitch variation abilities in individuals with CAS via the tone-sequencing tasks (TSTs), focusing on task performance and the effects of syllable structure, lexical status, and tones. Method Three Cantonese-speaking children with

Resonator properties of paranasal sinuses: preliminary results of an anatomical study.

Nasal irrigation is an effective and cheap method in managing post sinonasal surgery patients. It works by improving ciliary clearance and performing mechanical debridement of the thick crust, decreasing mucosal edema and reducing the inflammatory mediators. Presence of nasal irrigation bottle contamination and its effect on patients have been studied. The aim of this study is to prospectively identify the risk of contamination in the nasal irrigation bottle, fluid from the bottle and to correlate with endoscopic findings from the patients who had underwent sinonasal surgery. Swabs will be tak

Gap detection in multiple narrow bands of noise as a function of spectral configuration.

This study sought to differentiate between the effect of stimulus bandwidth and the effect of number of activated auditory channels on gap detection in narrow bands of noise. The aim was to clarify the role of across-frequency analysis in temporal processing. Experiment 1 established that when total noise bandwidth is held constant at 100 Hz, gap detection improves as stimulus energy is distributed to both lower and higher frequencies. Experiment 2a showed that the effect was smaller, or was absent, when the cumulative stimulus bandwidth was increased from 100 to 200 Hz. Experiment 2b confirme

A child with an unusually high-level spontaneous otoacoustic emission.

We describe a child who emitted a continuous audible sound from his left ear. A high-level spontaneous otoacoustic emission was measured at the frequency of 5.64 kHz with an amplitude of 55 dB sound pressure level. A high-frequency hearing loss was measured in both ears; however, it was more pronounced in the emitting ear. The emission failed to synchronize to external click stimuli. This spontaneous emission is probably related to a cochlear defect, but it should not contribute additionally to the child's existing auditory impairment.

[Suppression of evoked otoacoustic emissions by contralateral noise exposure in humans].

The effects of contralateral noise exposure on evoked otoacoustic emission (e-OAE) were investigated in 10 normal hearing subjects and 3 cases with unilateral deafness. The e-OAE was recorded by ILO88 and weighting noise was given to the contralateral ear (impaired side in unilateral deafness cases). The air conducted noise exposure showed suppressive effect on e-OAE along with the increase of noise stimulus intensity in normal hearing subjects, but did not in unilateral deafness cases. The degree of suppression in e-OAE was most remarkable in highest peak power between 1 kHz and 2 kHz in FFT

Stapedius reflex thresholds in relation to tails of auditory nerve fiber frequency tuning curves.

The acoustic stapedius reflex (ASR) threshold on non-anesthetized rabbits was compared to some measures of the single auditory nerve fiber activity of rabbits. The observations were made on normal-hearing animals, with some additional data from noise-exposed individuals. The results showed that the ASR threshold was reached at a sound level above saturation of discharge rate for individual neurons at their characteristic frequency (CF) in normal animals. It was found, on the other hand, that the ASR threshold measured across frequencies from 0.25 to 12.0 kHz were at a level similar to that of

Sonographic findings of prescrotal superficial angiomyxoma.

Sonographic findings of a prescrotal superficial angiomyxoma have never been reported in the English literature. Here, we describe a case of left prescrotal superficial angiomyxoma, which was depicted on ultrasonography as a well-circumscribed, heterogeneously, and mildly echogenic, unilocular complex, posterior acoustic-enhanced, and dermally attached subcutaneous mass without increased vascular flow.

[Diagnostic implications of examination of the middle ear resonance frequency].

Resonance frequency of the middle ear was examined in 24 persons with normal hearing, 10 patients with otosclerosis and 4 patients subjected to stapedioplasty. It is shown that shift of the resonance frequency is important for differential diagnosis. In particular, in otosclerosis resonance frequency shifts to higher values, while in mass increases (rupture of acoustic bones chain) there is a shift to lower frequencies.

Restoration of hearing with an auditory brainstem implant in a patient with neurofibromatosis type 2--case report.

A 25-year-old male with neurofibromatosis type 2 had hearing restored with an auditory brainstem implant (ABI) after removal of an acoustic schwannoma. The ABI allows the patient to discern many different environment sounds and is a significant adjunct to lip-reading, enabling conversation with people who have clear pronunciation without the necessity for writing.

Adjunctive color Doppler ultrasonography in second-trimester transabdominal amnioinfusion.

Transabdominal amnioinfusion improves the diagnostic accuracy of ultrasonography in pregnancies complicated by second-trimester oligohydramnios. Needle localization may be difficult because of patient obesity or the absence of an acoustic window. The two cases presented demonstrate that color Doppler imaging facilitates amnioinfusion by visualizing the injection jet of free-flowing infusate, confirming intraamniotic needle placement.

Auditory neurophysiology.

The anatomy and the physiology of the ear and the auditory system are reviewed. The differences between the anatomy and physiology in humans and animals commonly used in auditory research are discussed. The clinical importance of brainstem auditory evoked potentials and their neural generators are discussed as well as the anatomy and physiology of the acoustic middle ear reflex. The possible clinical relevance of the extralemniscal auditory system is also addressed.

[Ultrasound aspect of fascioliasis of the biliary tract].

Concerning two cases of biliary distomiasis, the authors describe the sonographic patterns leading to the ultrasonic diagnosis of this parasite. Gallbladder distomiasis appears as an echogenic, oval structure, without acoustic shadow. It characteristically displays mobility and variable shape. The aspect of common bile duct distomiasis is reported for the first time. It is a nonshadowing linear structure and however non specific.

Ultrathin Nanocrystal-Based Resistive Skin Conforming to Finger Knuckle Wrinkles for Dynamic, Nontransferable Wearable Authentication.

With the rapid expansion of the Internet of Things (IoT), secure authentication has become paramount for safeguarding the digital ecosystem against spoofing attacks and privacy breaches. Optical and acoustic modalities currently dominate biometric authentication; however, they remain inherently vulnerable to environmental interference. Here, we report ultrathin (<50 nm), substrate-free gold nanoplatelet skins that conform intimately to finger-knuckle wrinkles, enabling dynamic and nontransferable wearable authentication. Unlike light- or sound-based systems, these nanocrystal skins generate un

LiNbO3 and ZnO-Ni multilayer thin films as hybrid metamaterials towards tunable properties.

Hybrid metamaterials (HMMs) are artificially designed materials made with two or more materials and present optical, magnetic, and mechanical responses that can be tailored. They have attracted great interest in various applications including advanced photonic and acoustic devices. HMMs have been demonstrated in the form of multilayer, particles in matrix, vertically aligned nanocomposites (VANs), and other morphologies. In this work, multilayer and VAN morphologies are integrated as complex HMMs by growing ZnO-Ni VAN and lithium niobate (LiNbO3, LNO) multilayer structures in either bi-layer s
