The poor outcomes of young people with chronic health conditions indicate that current services and self-care programmes are not meeting the needs of young people. How young people self-manage their condition impacts on long-term health outcomes, but there is little published evidence that details the development of self-care programmes and their most effective components. This article reports on an innovative formative research study, the purpose of which was to develop a self-care intervention prototype. Participants were 87 young people, aged 12-17, and seven young adult facilitators, aged

Studying blindness with various onset ages may elucidate the ways that unimodal sensory deprivation at different periods of development shape the human brain. In order to determine the effect of the onset age on brain anatomical networks, we extended a previous study of 17 early blind (EB) subjects with an additional 97 subjects with various onset ages. We constructed binary anatomical networks of these subjects and sighted controls (SC) using diffusion tensor tractography and calculated the topological properties of the network. Based on onset age, the subjects were divided into congenitally

The neonatal period is classically described as the first 28 days of life, but owing to the fact that changes in skeletal tissue occur at a somewhat slower pace than those of other organ systems, events of the first few months are considered herein. Neonatal bone health is a problem of growing interest and concern because of the increasing recognition of its impact upon childhood, adolescent and even adult bone health. Osteoporosis in adulthood often has its roots in childhood and some forms may be prevented by proper attention to neonatal and childhood bone health. The premature infant likely

OBJECTIVE: To study reproduction in a representative group of anorexia nervosa (AN) cases.
METHOD: Fifty-one adolescent-onset AN cases (48 women; three men), originally recruited after community screening, and 51 matched comparison cases (COMP) were interviewed 18 years after AN onset at a mean age of 32 years, regarding pregnancies and early development of the children.
RESULTS: The results of the 48 AN and 48 COMP group women are reported in the present study. Six women still had an eating disorder (ED), none of whom had become a mother. Twenty-seven women in the AN group and 31 women in t

This article reviews trends in pediatric solid organ transplantation over the last decade, as reflected in OPTN/SRTR data. In 2004, children younger than 18 years made up nearly 3% of the 86,378 candidates for organ transplantation and nearly 7% of the 27,031 organ transplant recipients. Children accounted for nearly 14% of the 7152 deceased organ donors. The transplant community recognizes important differences between pediatric and adult organ transplant recipients, including different etiologies of organ failure, surgical procedures that are more complex or technically challenging, effects

While research on early-intervention programs remains rare in France, there are numerous scientific publications in the English-language literature. This article attempts to describe the contribution of such programs in terms of children subsequent development and changes in their families. Twenty-six programs incorporating home intervention, care, social support and early-childhood education, have been conducted for more than a year within local and hospital populations selected through various scales of risk. The large majority of the programs have randomized trials. Intervention and early e

Hong Kong has a population of 5.5 million with 1.3 million below the age of 15. Child psychiatry has been very under-developed until recently. The brief history and development of child psychiatry in Hong Kong, and specifically that of the Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Unit at the Prince of Wales Hospital, the teaching hospital of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, are described. Traditionally psychiatric services for children in Hong Kong were heavily skewed towards neuropsychiatric and developmental conditions but in this Unit a full spectrum of child psychiatric conditions are seen. INTRODUCTION: Synthesised data on the global prevalence of scoliosis in children and adolescents and its associated risk factors remain scarce. This systematic review aimed to estimate the global prevalence of scoliosis in children and adolescents and identify associated risk factors in children and adolescents.
METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis, searching nine electronic databases for observational population-based studies on scoliosis in children and adolescents published until June 02, 2024, without language or geographical restrictions. We estimated the global pr

BACKGROUND: The Galilee Study is the first large epidemiological study to compare correlates of mental disorders between two Arab Palestinian minority groups of adolescents in Israel.
METHODS: A two-stage cross-sectional study, carried out between 2012 and 2014, included all 9th grade students from 5 Arab localities, representative of 77% of the Muslim and 100% of Druze citizens in Israel. During the screening stage, 1639 students completed the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire in the classroom (response rate = 69.3%). During the follow-up stage, 704 adolescent-mother dyads were interv

BACKGROUND: Cerebral palsy (CP) comprises a heterogeneous group of disorders whose clinical manifestations and epidemiologic characteristics vary across socioeconomic and geographic contexts. The functional severity of untreated CP in low-income countries has been insufficiently studied; a better understanding of how these children present for care in resource-constrained environments is important because it will better characterize the natural history of CP, guide clinical decision-making, and aid in the prognostication of children with untreated CP.

Calcium signaling through T-type channels is essential for ovarian function. This study reveals that blocking these channels disrupts follicle development and hormone production by impairing mitochondrial function and suppressing the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/protein kinase B pathway in mice. AbstractCalcium (Ca2+) functions as a critical secondary messenger in cellular signaling and is essential for maintaining ovarian function and promoting oocyte maturation. However, the contribution of T-type voltage-gated calcium channels (VGCCs) to ovarian follicle development remains unclear. To inv

Epilepsy associated with malformations of cortical development (MCD) is often characterized by impaired cortical inhibition and altered brain metabolism, both of which play a key role in epileptogenesis. Recently, we reported the Wistar Audiogenic Rat (WAR), an epileptic-prone strain with induced cortical microgyria, exhibited increased ictogenesis and enhanced local cortical network synchrony, making it a reliable model to study epileptogenesis during development. The present study aimed to evaluate synaptic inhibition and glucose metabolism in several brain regions of this two-hit model of e

Williams syndrome (WS) is a rare genetic syndrome. As with all rare syndromes, obtaining adequately powered sample sizes is a challenge. Here we present legacy data from seven UK labs, enabling the characterisation of cross-sectional and longitudinal developmental trajectories of verbal and non-verbal development in the largest sample of individuals with WS to-date. In Study 1, we report cross-sectional data between N = 102 and N = 209 children and adults with WS on measures of verbal and non-verbal ability. In Study 2, we report longitudinal data from N = 17 to N = 54 children and adults with

BACKGROUND: Multiple developmental risk factors for Substance Use Disorders (SUDs) during young adulthood have been identified. In this investigation, we examined the impact of homelessness, foster care, and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) prior to 12th grade on the development of three common SUDs during young adulthood-Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD), Tobacco Use Disorder (TUD) and Cannabis Use Disorder (CUD). Our hypothesis was that while both homelessness and ACEs are significant risk factors for young adult SUDs, foster care involvement might convey protection.

Currently, one of the important causes of brain injury in new-borns is the neonatal anoxia which impacts the perinatology services worldwide. Animal models of anoxia have been used to assess its effects at cellular and behavioural levels in all ages, but few studies focus on sex differences. This study aimed to investigate some physical parameters of development, sensorimotor alterations, early neurological reflexes as well as the density of cells in motor and sensorimotor cerebral cortex of adolescent rats submitted to neonatal anoxia. The results presented significant differences in most of

Although autism is diagnosed according to three core features of social deficits, communication impairments, and repetitive or stereotyped behaviors, other behavioral features such as sensory and motor impairments are present in more than 70% of individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Exposure of rat pups to the teratogen valproate during sensitive periods of brain development has been shown to elicit behavioral features associated with autism diagnosis and has been proposed as a valid animal model of the disorder. The purpose of this study was to characterize sensory and motor perfo

Several reports have suggested that early neonatal immune activation adversely influences the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis development in humans and animal models. In addition, there have been several studies indicating that early intervention with fluoxetine (FLX) can alter HPA axis development and function, and prevent occurrence of behavioral abnormalities induced by common early-life insults. The present study aims to investigate the effects of early intervention with FLX following early neonatal immune activation on depression-like behaviors and body weight in mice. Neonatal

In light of the growing prevalence of obesity in the United States, and the health risks associated with childhood obesity in particular, it is critical to identify avenues for obesity prevention. This study tests the hypothesis that breastfeeding serves as one protective factor against children's subsequent development of obesity. We used linear-, logistic-, and sibling fixed-effects regression models to evaluate the association between infant feeding history and body mass index (BMI) in late childhood or adolescence (9-19 years, mean = 14 years). Complete data were available for 976 particip

Key questions regarding the training and physiological qualities required to produce an elite rock climber remain inadequately defined. Little research has been done on young climbers. The aim of this paper was to review literature on climbing alongside relevant literature characterising physiological adaptations in young athletes. Evidence-based recommendations were sought to inform the training of young climbers. Of 200 studies on climbing, 50 were selected as being appropriate to this review, and were interpreted alongside physiological studies highlighting specific common development growt
