Organophotocatalytic Aryl Radical-Mediated Deoxygenative Imination of Alcohols.

Herein, we report a transition-metal-free organophotocatalytic strategy for the deoxygenative formation of C(sp3)-N bonds from readily available alcohols. The method employs diaryl ketone O-aroyl oximes as bifunctional reagents, serving as both radical precursors and nitrogen sources. Under mild visible-light irradiation, primary, secondary, and tertiary alcohol-derived xanthates are efficiently converted to imines with broad functional group tolerance. The protocol is practical, enabling gram-scale synthesis, one-pot imidation, and late-stage functionalization of complex molecules such as qui

Transient Sepsis-Induced Cardiomyopathy in the Setting of Alcohol Withdrawal.

Sepsis-induced cardiomyopathy (SICM) is a reversible myocardial dysfunction that occurs in the setting of severe sepsis and septic shock, often complicating the management of patients with underlying cardiovascular disease. We report the case of a 62-year-old man with heart failure with improved ejection fraction (HFimpEF), paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, and severe alcohol use disorder who developed septic shock due to Enterococcus faecalis bacteremia, complicated by multiorgan failure and transient worsening of cardiac function. Myocardial dysfunction was attributed to SICM based on the temp

Borane-Mediated Highly Secondary Selective Deoxyfluorination of Alcohols.

Organofluorine compounds are vital across multiple sectors, hence highly selective methods to install fluorine are of considerable importance. The deoxyfluorination of alcohols is a key approach to prepare organofluorine compounds, however, a highly secondary (2°)-selective deoxyfluorination of alcohols has not been realized to date. Herein, we report that borane-mediated deoxyfluorination results in high 2°-selectivity in inter- and intra-molecular competition reactions versus primary (1°), tertiary (3°) and even benzylic (Bn) alcohols. This is an operationally simple method using only commer

General Equation for Expressing the Physicochemical Properties of Aliphatic Alcohols.

In this work, two general equations were proposed to express the nonlinear and linear changes in physicochemical properties of aliphatic alcohols, involving boiling point, refractive index, critical temperature, critical volume, and so on. The two general equations all are expressed with the same six molecular descriptors. The results show that the linear and nonlinear change properties of aliphatic alcohols have good correlations with the same six molecular descriptors. Using the obtained correlation equations, various properties of aliphatic alcohols without experimental values were predicte

Organic photoredox-catalyzed unimolecular PCET of benzylic alcohols.

Proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) is a crucial chemical process involving the simultaneous or sequential transfer of protons and electrons, playing a vital role in biological processes and energy conversion technologies. This study investigates the use of an organic photoredox catalyst to facilitate a unimolecular PCET process for the generation of alkyl radicals from benzylic alcohols, with a particular focus on alcohols containing electron-rich arene units. By employing a benzophenone derivative as the catalyst, the reaction proceeds efficiently under photoirradiation, achieving signif

An Update on Animal Models of Alcohol-Associated Liver Disease.

Alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) is a significant global health concern and a leading cause of liver disease-related deaths. However, the treatment options are limited due to the lack of animal models that accurately replicate ALD pathogenesis. An ideal ALD animal model should have pathological characteristics similar to those of human ALD, with a clear pathological process and ease of drug intervention. Over the years, researchers have focused on developing ideal ALD preclinical animal models by testing various methods, such as ad libitum drinking water with ethanol, acute, single large

Advanced alcoholic liver disease driven by a proferroptotic diet.

Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) encompasses a spectrum of disorders, with advanced ALD-characterized by liver fibrosis-representing a severe stage with high mortality. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism ALD mouse model, a classical approach to studying ALD by delivering alcohol through the Lieber-DeCarli (LD) diet, typically does not progress to advanced ALD. We previously determined that ferroptosis causes hepatocellular injury in this model. Here, we speculate that the enrichment of MUFAs and vitamin E, which inhibit ferroptosis, and the lack of the proferroptotic nutrient

Medical Treatments and Outcomes in Acute Alcohol-Related Hepatitis.

Alcohol-related hepatitis (AH) is the most acute and severe manifestation of alcohol-related liver disease. AH represents a spectrum of disease and portends poor prognosis with severe disease. Severe AH can have up to a 70% mortality at 6 months in medically refractory disease. Treatment options are limited and, thus, represent a critical unmet need. This review provides an overview of outcomes across the spectrum of disease severity in AH. We discuss current treatments available for AH, and how they apply to contemporary medical practice.

Sport and alcohol consumption: early identification and management prevention.

Alcohol consumption represents the leading cause of death and disability under the age of 24. Among the most frequent physical problems there is certainly musculoskeletal damage. This creates problems in carrying out physical activity and sports. The aim of this narrative review is to assess the size of the problem of alcohol consumption and sport, the motivations and possible solutions. This narrative review is based on a detailed analysis of the scientific literature published before June 30th, 2024 (PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Google Scholar). In sporting contexts there is a higher cons

Post-College Social Roles, Stress, and Alcohol Use.

OBJECTIVE: Attaining adult roles has been posited to play a key role in maturing out of problematic alcohol use. However, inconsistent effects have been found for certain roles (e.g., full-time work), and relatively few studies have examined roles unique to the post-college period, such as returning home to live with parents and attending graduate school. We furthered this research by examining how attainment of various roles (romantic relationships, full-time work, graduate school, and living independently from parents) in the immediate years after college, and stress related to these domains

Combined pharmacological and psychosocial interventions for alcohol use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a mental disorder characterised by a strong desire to consume alcohol and impaired control of alcohol use, with devastating consequences. Many people with AUD do not respond to psychosocial or pharmacological interventions when these are provided alone. Combining these interventions may improve the response to treatment, though evidence remains limited. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of combined pharmacological and psychosocial interventions for the treatment of AUD in adults. SEARCH METHODS: We searched CENTRAL, MEDLINE, Embase, three other datab

Projected alcohol demand in college students with heavy drinking.

Measures of the relative reinforcing value of alcohol (i.e., alcohol demand) are associated with concurrent and future rates of alcohol use. Given that college-age young adults may fail to predict escalation of substance use, the present project explores the novel construct of projected future demand by college students who engage in heavy drinking and whether it can predict future alcohol use. During an initial session, participants completed a standard alcohol purchase task, a projected alcohol purchase task (i.e., "three months from now"), and measures of past-month alcohol consumption and

The economic costs of alcohol consumption in Lithuania, 2015-20.

Alcohol per capita consumption in Lithuania among the population 15 years of age and older has been among the highest globally in recent decades. Long-term alcohol consumption trends and drinking patterns signal a significant public health problem, as well as social and economic losses. This study aimed to estimate the economic burden associated with alcohol consumption in Lithuania from 2015 to 2020. We used a cost-of-illness methodology with the human capital approach to estimate the economic burden and applied a prevalence-based approach. Using multiyear data, we estimated both, direct and

Housing Eviction and Alcohol-Related Harms: A Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol-related harms - including acute and chronic harms as well as those partially- and fully-attributable to alcohol consumption - incur a substantial public health burden. Understanding the potential associations between structural factors, such as housing eviction, and alcohol-related harms could elucidate important opportunities for reducing this burden. Therefore, the objective of this review is to assess what current research shows about the associations between eviction and alcohol-related harms. METHODS: Using PubMed/Medline, APA PsycINFO, and Web of Science, we conducte

[Alcohol use disorder: screening, diagnosis and follow-up].

AIMS: In the clinical assessment of alcohol use disorder (AUD), measuring tools are essential to help recognizing the condition, determining the severity of the disorder, and assessing craving and relapse after identifying potential complications. Currently, there are no measurement tools available in Hungary that can quantify the severity of alcohol dependence, the extent of alcohol craving, and the risk of relapse, or help in the early detection of complicated alcohol withdrawal syndrome (c-AWS). There for the aim of the present study was to evaluate the psychometric indicators of the Hungar

Binge Drinking and Crime: Accounting for Alcohol Availability in Neighborhoods.

Background: The relationship between alcohol availability and crime is relatively well established. On the other hand, alcohol availability in neighborhoods may result in excessive alcohol use that is associated with crime, and we know less about the role that binge drinking has in crime. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines binge drinking as "consuming 5 or more drinks on an occasion for men or 4 or more drinks on an occasion for women." Methods: In this study, we gathered Milwaukee, Wisconsin 2021 data on binge drinking from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a
