Multimodal Analysis of Giant Anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla) Femorotibiopatellar Joint Anatomy: Macroscopic, Radiographic, and Ultrasonographic Findings.

The giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla) is an endangered species, and further studies on its morphology are essential for conservation efforts. These animals adopt a bipedal posture on their pelvic limbs for defense and foraging. This study aimed to evaluate the femorotibiopatellar joint, that is, the stifle joint (SJ), in M. tridactyla, and to describe its anatomical characteristics using macroscopic, radiographic, and ultrasound approaches. A total of 18 joint evaluations were conducted using five specimens fixed in 10% formalin (six joints) and six thawed carcasses (12 joints). Radiogr

A ERA/Cas12f1_ge4.1 biosensor for rapid, sensitive, and cost-effective detection of Chlamydia psittaci via fluorescence and lateral flow assays.

Rapid and accurate detection of Chlamydia psittaci, the causative agent of psittacosis, is crucial for both human and animal health but presents significant challenges, particularly in grassroots health institutions. Our previous PDTCTR fluorescence sensing platform, which combined the engineered Cas12f1_ge4.1 system with recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA), significantly enhanced detection efficiency. However, its requirement for specialized equipment, costly RPA reagents, and absence of visual output restricted its practical application in such environments. To address these limitatio

The Pathogenicity Mechanisms of Staphylococcus aureus.

Staphylococcus aureus is one of the most important bacterial pathogens affecting both humans and animals. This review discusses the most significant factors that contribute to the pathogenicity of these bacteria and the mechanisms that regulate their expression. We also focus on the factors that play a role in the pathogenesis of skin diseases. S. aureus possesses a wide array of virulence factors that allow it to bypass passive and active mechanisms of the host's immune system and effectively infect and spread within the infected organism. These include factors that facilitate colonization of

Genome-wide phenotypic insights into mycobacterial virulence using Drosophila melanogaster.

Drosophila melanogaster (Drosophila) is one of the most extensively studied animal models we have, with a broad, advanced, and organized research community. Yet, Drosophila has barely been exploited to understand the underlying mechanisms of mycobacterial infections, which cause some of the deadliest infectious diseases humans are currently battling. Here, we identified mycobacterial genes required for the pathogen's growth during Drosophila infection. Using Mycobacterium marinum (Mmar) to model mycobacterial pathogens, we first validated that an established mycobacterial virulence factor, Ecc

Placental Nanoparticle-mediated IGF1 Gene Therapy Corrects Fetal Growth Restriction in a Guinea Pig Model.

Fetal growth restriction (FGR) caused by placental insufficiency is a major contributor to neonatal morbidity and mortality. There is currently no in utero treatment for placental insufficiency or FGR. The placenta serves as the vital communication, supply, exchange, and defense organ for the developing fetus and offers an excellent opportunity for therapeutic interventions. Here we show efficacy of repeated treatments of trophoblast-specific human insulin-like 1 growth factor (IGF1) gene therapy delivered in a non-viral, polymer nanoparticle to the placenta for the treatment of FGR. Using a g

Spatially resolved transcriptomic profiling of placental development in dairy cow.

The placenta plays a crucial role in successful mammalian reproduction. Ruminant animals possess a semi-invasive placenta characterized by a highly vascularized structure formed by maternal endometrial caruncles and fetal placental cotyledons, essential for full-term fetal development. The cow placenta harbors at least two trophoblast cell populations: uninucleate (UNC) and binucleate (BNC) cells. However, the limited capacity to elucidate the transcriptomic dynamics of the placental natural environment has resulted in a poor understanding of both the molecular and cellular interactions betwee

Murine vaginal secretory responses to a male volatile chemical messenger.

Many species use chemical messengers to communicate a remarkable range of information. Mice appear to make particular use of chemical messengers, including effects on estrous cycling and initiation, pregnancy, aggression, stress and of course attraction. Behavioral studies have helped identify several candidate messengers, or pheromones, that mediate attraction in mice. One question is whether attractive chemical messengers induced a physical vaginal secretory response. The preparation hypothesis posits that increased vaginal secretion would lubricate and protect the vagina in response to the

Antibiotic resistance in urban soils: Dynamics and mitigation strategies.

Antibiotic resistance (AR) is a critical global health issue with significant clinical and economic implications. AR occurs when microorganisms develop mechanisms to withstand the effects of antibiotics, reducing treatment efficacy and increasing the risk of mortality and healthcare costs. While the connection between antibiotic use in clinical and agricultural settings and the emergence of AR is well-established, the role of urban soils as reservoirs and spreaders of AR is underexplored. This review examines the complex dynamics of AR in urban soils, highlighting the various sources of antibi

Efficacy of Carbonate Buffer Mixture in Preventing Hoof Lamella Injury Associated with Subacute Ruminal Acidosis in Dairy Goats.

Subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA) is a prevalent metabolic disorder in highly productive dairy cows that results in serious issues, including hoof lamellar injuries. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of a carbonate buffer mixture (CBM) in preventing hoof lamella injury in dairy goats, a species also susceptible to SARA due to similar feeding practices over a 17-week period. Twenty-four healthy dairy goats were randomly assigned to three groups: control, SARA, and CBM groups. The control group received a standardized diet, whereas the SARA and CBM groups were subjected to a high-grain

Cadmium neurotoxicity: Insights into behavioral effect and neurodegenerative diseases.

Cadmium (Cd) induced neurotoxicity has become a growing concern due to its potential adverse effects on the Central Nervous System. Cd is a Heavy Metal (HM) that is released into the environment, through several industrial processes. It poses a risk to the health of the community by polluting air, water, and soil. Cd builds up in the brain and other neural tissues, raising concerns about its effect on the nervous system due to its prolonged biological half-life. Cd can enter into the neurons, hence increasing the production of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) in them and impairing their antioxida

Epidemiological Consequences of Individual Centrality on Wild Chimpanzees.

Disease outbreaks are one of the key threats to great apes and other wildlife. Because the spread of some pathogens (e.g., respiratory viruses, sexually transmitted diseases, ectoparasites) are mediated by social interactions, there is a growing interest in understanding how social networks predict the chain of pathogen transmission. In this study, we built a party network from wild chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes), and used agent-based modeling to test: (i) whether individual attributes (sex, age) predict individual centrality (i.e., whether it is more or less socially connected); (ii) whether i

Comprehensive analysis of the C. elegans connectome reveals novel circuits and functions of previously unstudied neurons.

Despite decades of research on the Caenorhabditis elegans nervous system based on an anatomical description of synaptic connectivity, the circuits underlying behavior remain incompletely described and the functions of many neurons are still unknown. Updated and more complete chemical and gap junction connectomes of both adult sexes covering the entire animal including the muscle end organ have become available recently. Here, these are analyzed to gain insight into the overall structure of the connectivity network and to suggest functions of individual neuron classes. Modularity analysis divid

Effects of hydrothermal pretreatment on sulfadiazine degradation during two-stage anaerobic digestion of pig manure.

Antibiotics in animal manure pose significant risks to the environment and health. While anaerobic digestion (AD) is commonly used for pig manure treatment, its efficiency in antibiotic removal has been considerably limited. This study investigated the impact of hydrothermal pretreatment (HTP) on sulfadiazine (SDZ) removal in a two-stage AD system. Results indicated that the HTP process reduced SDZ concentration by 40.61%. Furthermore, the SDZ removal efficiency of the AD system coupling HTP increased from 50.90% to 65.04% compared to the untreated system. Biogas yield was also improved by 26.

Viral infections in pregnancy and impact on offspring neurodevelopment: mechanisms and lessons learned.

Pregnant individuals with viral illness may experience significant morbidity and have higher rates of pregnancy and neonatal complications. With the growing number of viral infections and new viral pandemics, it is important to examine the effects of infection during pregnancy on both the gestational parent and the offspring. Febrile illness and inflammation during pregnancy are correlated with risk for autism, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and developmental delay in the offspring in human and animal models. Historical viral epidemics had limited follow-up of the offspring of affec

Mouse Models in Circadian Rhythm and Melatonin Research.

This contribution reviews the role of inbred and transgenic mouse strains for deciphering the mammalian melatoninergic and circadian system. It focusses on the pineal organ as melatonin factory and two major targets of the melatoninergic system, the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN) and the hypophysial pars tuberalis (PT). Mammalian pinealocytes sharing molecular characteristics with true pineal and retinal photoreceptors synthesize and secrete melatonin into the blood and cerebrospinal fluid night by night. Notably, neuron-like connections exist between the deep pinealocytes and the habenular/pret
